  1. That's all I've ever used, pancake mix and thin it to the proper consistency with whatever beer I have in my hand at the moment maybe add a little seasoning.
  2. Baiting is OK as long as you hunt away from the bait the legal distance. The MNR actually baits at the Long Point Waterfowl Management Unit to hold birds in the area longer and all the blinds you rent from the ministry are the legal distance. Lot of the large private marshes do it as well, just have to have enough land to keep far enough away with the blinds.
  3. It's your lucky day according to the Long Point Page , Big Dave is looking for 2 walk-ons to fill his charter tomorrow. This boat typically limits out on jumbo erie perch, try a call. http://www.longpoint.on.ca/images/adrotator/bigdaveflyer.pdf
  4. It was the lack of proofs that suggested trade gun initially to me. Seems there was two qualities of arms back in the fur days, good ones with all the proofs for the white man and cheaply made versions often lacking proofs that were traded to the natives for furs.
  5. I wasn't suggesting it be made into a lamp only that the one dad has had been long b4 my 62 years. If it has a thick barrel then it is obviously better than the similar looking one I am familar with. Is it smoothbore or rifled ? I've been involved with blackpowder since the 70's with 3 modern repro's of old guns, not that new in-line wannabe stuff, thought I could help. Lack of proof marks and identifying marks on the manufacture of the lock work suggested trade gun to me.
  6. caught a few in the Welland River/Chippewa Creek as a kid years ago, probably a few still there. Yep they are small, dad called them grass pike.
  7. I fished a lot of years solo back in the old days when the rule was one rod, always prefered the fight from a stationary boat Run 2 rods when searching for fish, but if you get into fish good consider going to one rod, leave motor in gear till the rigger is cleared if down , then kill the motor Sames a lot of agrivation trying to fight steer net and land a fish and maybe saves money on lost tackle and time from untangling a mess
  8. We have a virtually identical smoothbore in the family, it is at dad's and it was very nicely made into a floor lamp with wires running down the barrel from a hole in the breech. From what I could research it is basically a " Trade Gun". These were cheaply made with little or no proof marks and the main use was a trade item with the natives for furs, hence the poor construction. Think it probably has a quite thin smoothbore damascus barrel and I would not attempt to use it even with black powder for which it was made. The value would be more of a family heirloom.
  9. AWESOME X3, I'm guessing that is the Grimsby weather buoy
  10. Home Depot has this stuff, seen quite favourable comments on it, probably what I am going to use in the off season. http://www.ducan.com/
  11. I would never undo my winch line until I was over water with my roller trailer for no one. I put a bow line on before undoing the winch line cause any slope to the ramp it wants to go.
  12. Upper Irondale has some brookies and I understand that since I've been frequenting the area Browns have been stocked in the Burnt. Also expect to find smallies and a few walleyes even musky in the warmer stretches.
  13. A bit south of you but the Burnt River follows HWY 503 for long ways east and west of Gooderham, lots of access points and for the most part pretty tame, slow and meandering. sorry that's the Irondale, the Burnt starts in my old stomping grounds Loon Lake and they both eventually hook up, and both are fairly tame canoeing rivers .
  14. I wonder how the fabric will hold up with UV exposure outdoors, some just disintegrate pretty quick.
  15. For sure, I had a couple of broken limbs and the dead wood removed from my big old willow, $800 plus tax later this spring
  16. I've had a Sylvan 30 years now, for the most part it worked like GM, the same basic boat was marketed by both firms with a few cosmetic differences just like Pontiac and Chevy versions on the same body platform. What is more disturbing than losing the Sylvan line is Starcraft has seemed to discontinue the Islander models
  17. 1/2 pork loins on sale at No Frills starting tomorrow for only $1.47 a pound
  18. My dad bought a place in Haliburton back in 68 and had it for almost 30 years, we had a nice sandy shallow bottom but a lot of places get deep real fast with rock, never a prob with weeds. Great mix of fish Our place was on Loon, which started with bass and pickeral, but later musky and lakers were introduced. Always something different to fish for depending on the season, a canoe will get you into smaller lakes with excellent Specs, Splake and Rainbows if you do your homework. Lastly pike are absent If I could afford the asking prices they want now I'd have a place there in a heartbeat. If I recall he got the place with 200 frontage in 68 for $8800
  19. Get and cheap tent and let the boys rough it outside
  20. The airport at Port Maitland got its start as a training facilty for Commonwealth pilots during WW2, even British pilots got their wings there as the skys over England were a little hostile for training purposes. The marsh was the site of a lot of target practice and bombing practice, there supposedly is a lot of expended and live unexploded ordnance buried in the mud there, so my dad used to say. Quite possibly could have been some kind of target buoy that popped out of the muck and followed the current out to the lake. Best idea I can come up with.
  21. Nice all my reel pouches are old blue ones
  22. awesome , better than the catches from the other end of the lake. Maybe with the hot summer the fish are migrating to our end where it is a bit deeper . Many bows out here?
  23. But when you crossed the Peace Bridge they were called Blue Pickeral They were never ever native there.
  24. Looks like a very nice trip and your boat is totally awesome Didn't you have an 18 Starcraft Mariner b4? I had the 18 Sylvan centre console. Similar boat going to refurb mine, but if I won the lottery I would go for yours or perhaps an Islander, little more comfort for an old guy.
