Lightning Tragedy on the Grand River
Big Cliff replied to BillsTheBassMan's topic in General Discussion
It is always sad when a young life is lost for nothing. Every summer we see dozens of people out here fishing on the lake in thunderstorms. So far we havn't seen anyone get hit but it is only a matter of time. I have often wondered what I would do if I did see some one get hit. I know it is the wrong thing but I would probably grab our defbrulator and head out to try to help them. -
I'm sure glad you had another one Roy, I was scared I might be catching up with you! Just remember my friend, at your age another year is the best present you can get! PS. Sue said to send her love and a big kiss (the love I'll send but I'm not delivering the kiss!)

OK, take this from someone that has been full circle. If you are good in sales and like it then stick with it. I joined the army when I was 18, did my three years, got out went back to school and finished my grade 12. Worked in sales/management positions (and a few others) until I was 60 but no matter what I did I always came back to sales. I sold my business in 2003 (the largest of it's kind in Canada (we sold industrial testing equipment) and retired but life without meeting new people every day was just not for me but I decided I needed a change. Went to school and served my apprenticeship got my license as a small engine technician. I love the trade but the work is seasonal and I can't sit around. Got offered a job in sales last winter (actually I guess I sold the guy on hiring me) and I love it. We actually just had the best quarter in the history of our branch so I guess I'm doing something right. Sales isn't something you do, it is in your heart and blood if you are any good at it. The best part about it is that you spend your days helping people and you actually get paid for doing it! Sure you have to work hard if you want to be the best but the nicest thing about the job is you are only limited by you! Now, I have some leads I am working on that you might be interested in. You aren't that far from Lindsay, if you would care to take a drive up this way, I'd be happy to sit down with you and might be able to open some doors for you. Give me a call if you are interested. 705-328-0577

Got to get me some of that black cherry to try! I play around with several different ones. I like maple and apple for pork, 9haven't tried cherry yet but I am going to. Mesquite for samon or trout but I do find you have to be careful how much you use. I also like red cedar for salmon and trout. Hickory for beef but again, you don't want to over do it. I still haven't decided what I like best for chicken. Any suggestions?

Thanks FFA, perhaps that is why I have never had an issue. Yes, I did get a few tickets when I was much younger but I deserved every one of them and I can't ever remember the cop not giving me a break even though they didn't need to. I actually had one tell me he was sorry he had to ticket me (still gave me the ticket though LOL but I really did deserve it). I've gotten many breaks too. Driving on the sholder of the road; we were in a traffic jam on the QEW for over an hour, the next exit was in sight, Sue had been telling me for about an hour and 10 minutes that she had to get to a washroom NOW!!! So I drove down the sholder to the exit where I got stopped. Explained to the officer, he asked for my license, took it, directed me to the nearest place with a washroom and told me he would meet me there. When he got there Sue was just coming out of the washroom with a huge smile of reliefe on her face, he took one look at her and laughed, told me he had a wife too and totally understood, gave me back my license and told us to have a nice day! crap, I thought Sue was going to kiss him LOL! The last ticket I got was 30 years ago, I was driving down Hwy 69, bright red camero, windows down, tunes cranked and driving much faster than I should have been. (man that car could GO!)Never even saw the cruser until he was right behind me. Nice young cop, asked me if I had a good story to tell him LOL. I just laughed and told him the truth, it was my wife's car, she wasn't there, it was only the second or third time she had ever let me drive it, I was on my way back down to TO with my son, the sun was shining, traffic was light, I was just in a good mood and it just felt right but if I had known he was there I'd have slowed down. He laughed told me that at least I was honest about it gave me a ticket for 10 over and told me to slow it down a bit. Perhaps my early years in the army taught me to respect authority, might just be that my parents taught me to try to respect everyone until they proved they didn't deserve respect. Could just be that when I show respect, I seem to get respect in return! Whatever the reason, I like it just the way it is (and it's saved me a lot of money over the years LOL). I guess the lesson to be learned here is: you have to plant a seed to get a crop, the seeds you plant usually determine the kind of crop you'll get. In this case, the seed seems to be called attitude!

LOL, obviously you never made it to some of the parties I've been to in my younger days! Actually though, you brought up some good points! Thanks for sharing! FFA, any comments? You seem to have a good head on your sholders, I'd like to hear your thoughts too.

If the line is old and cracked, replace it anyway, it will just save you a problem in the future even if the SeaFoam works for now. We aren't talking big bucks to replace the line, CTC sells it by the foot for about $1.28/foot. If the line inside of the cowling from the tank connector to the carb looks old and dried out, change it too. If that line has started to break down, that junk will get into your carb and cause problems.

What I am finding interesting about this thread is that some guys only ever seem to hit the bad ones while some others only ever seem to hit the good ones Do you think it might be attitude, body language, just the way we react to being stopped? I'd like to hear it from a cops perspective. What is it (apart from being cute, blond, big headlights, and a short skirt) that makes you let one guy/gal go with a warning and throw the book at the next one? How big a factor do WE play in your decision and what do you really look for? Wouldn't it be nice if we could all learn something from this!

My friend, any time!!!!!! My door is always open to you and yours!

I've been wanting to hook up with 2r's for years now, we just never seem to be available at the same times. Sounds like you guys had a wonderful trip, hats off to both of you!

Sounds very much like a fuel related problem, you might get away with running some SeaFoam through it, put some in the tank, run it for about 15 minutes then shut it down and let the SeaFoam work for an hour, if that doesn't do it, you might need a carb kit, not very expensive and fairly easy to install but adjustment on a 2 stroke is critical, too lean and you'll blow your motor very quickly. Try the SeaFoam first, don't play with the Lo/Hi speed jets. If it needs a carb kit you might be smart to take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Guess we have the last of the good ones here then, in the ten years we've lived here I haven't had any issues. I have always been treated in a polite friendly manner. Even when Sue got a ticket just after we moved here (she was doing 85 in what she thought was an 80 zone), turned out she was actually in a 60 zone, they reduced it to 10 over. Last spring I had an incident with my ATV: Riding two up, (not allowed) Riding on a public road (not allowed), my helmit was sitting on my front rack, (my bad) my wallet was sitting on my dresser in the house with my license, insurance, and registration in it. I got stopped not 20 yards from my driveway, I hate to think what those fines could have totled but instead, we had a nice chat and I was told not to do it again! Sure glad I live in the Kawarthas!

Accessing the internet in cottage country (and rural areas)

I have been with Xplornet for about 4 years now and love it. No up load/down load limites, 5mbps down load, excellent service, and I pay with taxes about $60.00/month. It has been very reliable for me! -

When my brother-in-law and best friend passed away 2 years ago, I was the one that found him. I didn't know what to do, I have had extensive training in first aid, CPR, and we have a defibrulator here at home because of Sue, a couple of quick checks and I knew he was gone but I had never been in this situation before so I called 911. The dispatcher had police, fire rescue, and ambulance there within minutes. The one officer that was first to respond was Cliff Tate, I'll never forget him! He was wonderful! He helped me way above and beyond what he had to! Made sure I was OK, helped me to arrange to have someone come to take care of Sue, told me what I should do about securing Herb's stuff. He stayed with me until every thing was taken care of and he and I were the last two people out of the door. He shook my hand and told me that if I needed ANYTHING, to call him! The Cliff Tates that serve and protect us deserve a lot of respect which they seldome seem to get! people are always so ready to find fault. I'd stand shoulder to shoulder with any one of them any day of the week at any time! -

Sort of reminds me of the story: Farmer hears a noise in the middle of the night, looks out his window and sees a couple of guys breaking into his garage so he calls the cops. Dispatcher told him that there wasn't anyone available, it would be an hour before they could get there. Guy hangs up, waits about a minute, calls back and tells the dispatcher not to hurry, they weren't going anywhere, he'd just shot them and hangs up. Within 5 minutes there are cops all over the place, they catch the guys stealing the stuff. Cop says to the farmer " you lied, you told the dispatcher you shot them". Farmer says yup, and the dispatcher told me no one could get here for an hour! All kidding aside, have you ever looked at the number of non emergency calls that get made to 911 every day? No wonder there are delays in getting to real emergencies sometimes. -
That Garlic, well your whole garden is amazing! We use to have a nice garden but over the years we've down sized it because I was always so busy with work and Sue couldn't help with it. Now all I have is a small asparagus patch and a little herb garden. Thanks for posting!

Not me, I go 110, keep to the right as much as I can and if anyone wants to pass me they have two lanes to do it in, they can go for it! It is really hard to pressure an old man, I want to get to Heaven but I'm not in any hurry to get anywhere at my age. Heck, I even had an OPP cruser stuck behind me for about 30 km the other day because I was doing 85 in an 80 zone and he just couldn't get past me, every time there was a clear stretch of Hwy., there were cars coming. Actually I kind of thought at one point he was using me as rolling camo LOL.

You were doing 130 in a 100 zone and got tailgated? Really??? Sounds like a PERFECT place for a speed trap to me!

The train was quite crowded, so a U S. Marine walked the entire length looking for a seat, but the only seat left was taken by a well dressed, middle-aged, French woman's poodle... The war-weary Marine asked, 'Ma'am, may I have that seat?' The French woman just sniffed and said to no one in particular 'Americans are so rude. My little Fifi is using that seat.' The Marine walked the entire train again, but the only seat left was under that dog. 'Please, ma'am. May I sit down? I'm very tired. She snorted, 'Not only are you Americans rude, you are also arrogant!' This time the Marine didn't say a word; he just picked up the little dog, threw it out of the train window, and sat down. The woman shrieked, 'Someone must defend my honour! This American should be put in his place!' An English gentleman sitting nearby spoke up, "Sir, you Americans often seem to have a penchant for doing the wrong thing. You hold the fork in the wrong hand. You drive your cars on the wrong side of the road. And now, sir, you seem to have thrown the wrong one out of the window".God bless the US Marines!

Have you ever done business with members of OFN?
Big Cliff replied to splashhopper's topic in General Discussion
Over the years I have done business with many of the members of OFC, both buying and selling and I have never had a bad experience so far. Your poll only allows one choice of why but I could pick all of the reasons there with no one reason being prominent, different reasons in different cases. I too was a small business owner many years ago and grew it to be the largest of it's type in Canada over 20 years. There were a number of factors which made us so successful, some of which included in no particular order: Quality products: I always made sure I sold good quality products from suppliers who stood behind them. Fair prices: I didn't try to get rich off any one sale and if I could find a way to reduce a customers cost without compromising quality I would make them aware of it. Well trained staff: I made sure that my staff knew their stuff, I would also pay for any business related courses they wanted to take. The deal was; you pay for and take the course, if you pass it, I will pay for it. Well paid staff: I always paid my staff well above the going rate for similar positions. This did a couple of things for me, it got me the best people available in their field. They knew that if they didn't do their job there was a line of people ready willing and able to take it. People weren't leaving for a better job somewhere else for the sake of a buck an hour more, turn over was minimal. My staff worked with me, not for me, they were part of a team and everyone was accountable to the rest of the team to do their job and do their share. Customer service: (Probably the single biggest factor) There were no answering machines, voice mail, or buttons to push, when a customer called a person answered the phone and directed their call. If it was for someone that wasn't available they advised the caller of when that person was expected and asked if they could help. They always tried to make every caller feel like the most important person in the world no matter how busy they were or how bad their day was going. We would always do our very best to make sure our customers were taken care of. As an example, if we told a customer we would call them back we always gave them a time frame. If we told them we would call them back within an hour we would do it even if it was to let them know we didn't have their answer yet but were working on it and expected to have the answer and when. If a customer needed something delivered out side of the normal delivery, we would arange it for them. I once had a taxi drive from Montreal to Milton with a $35.00 part for a customer because he had a job that was down costing him $2500.00/hour in down time. It was a Thursday, late afternoon, everyone else the customer had contacted had just told him that they couldn't get the part to him until Monday. He had his part before midnight. Mind you the customer paid for the cab but he never forgot that I had gone out of my way to bail him out when he was stuck. Running a business is just like baking a cake, leave out any one of the ingreadients and you might still have a cake, it just won't be as good as it could have been! -
9.9 Cutting out at low throttle (trolling speed)
Big Cliff replied to ctranter's topic in General Discussion
Reving high just before it dies is really bad for the engine, it is running lean so don't keep doing it, get it fixed before you end up with a much bigger problem! It could be a few things and they have already been covered here but it is without a doubt a fuel supply issue and the first thing I would be doing is checking the fuel lines.
