One of my go to lures over the years for walley has been a #2 or #3 silver mepps (very similar to the beetle spin and we tip it with two (not one, not three) 1" white twister tails and they always produce for me(except this year). In fact the only hit I did have the other evening that I thought might have been a walleye was on one of those mepps. I just stopped in to Queensway Bait this afternoon and picked up another 6 bucktails with different head colours and tail configurations. I also picked up a spool of 10lb fluro leader material which I am going to use on my braided lines. One thing I am thinking is that I have been using a snap swivel on my lines this year to facilitate changing up more quickly. I can't remember that ever being a problem before but I am starting to wonder if the extreemly clear water and the snap swivel could be making any difference. If I remember correctly in years gone by I have always tied directly to my line and I only started using braid this year too. The more I think about it when I fished and guided in the French I would never use anything but 6 lb mono Crystal Clear Line with no leader, no snap swivel and a smaller hook than you would normally consider using for walleye. I WILL figure this out!!!!!

The only thing I can tell you is "DON'T GO TO SLEEP COUNTRY" to buy one. I have had a couple of friends now that had nothing but problems with them. Wrong items delivered, defective items delivered, and no customer service when they tried to get the problems rectified. One of my friends even went so far as to send an email to the president of Sleep Country to ask her to help sort out their problems, he never even got a response.

Well, I sure appreciate all the offers of advice, I haven't stored my rods anywhere near gas, bug repellant, or anything else that I can think of that wouuld impart a scent. I usually use any one of 4 different rods when I am out, two with mono, two with braid. The one mono rod is rigged with 6 lb, the other with 8 lb.. Roy, if I knew what I was doing wrong I wouldn't be doing it LOL. The only consolation I have right now is that my next door neighbour who has also fished this lake for about 20 years isn't doing any better than I am. As far as someone hiding a banana on the boat, well, all I can say is they must have done a darn good job of hiding it because I can't find it LOL. Harrison that is a very kind offer and I'd love to get out with you but I am already comitted this Sunday and if the weather man is right, we'd be dodging thunder storms anyway. Any other time that works for you? My darling Daughter Teressa, you know that nice pickerel dinner I told you I would bring up; get the goat ready, I have a good recipe for curried goat because as it stands right now you are just going to have to do without the fresh pickerel. Sinker that is just plain adding insult to injury LOL. Right in front of my place eh? Guess I'll just have to start fishing for muskie, oh wait, I haven't been catching them either LOL. I haven't tried night fishing yet but I might just have to! Ron, if I haven't figured them out by mid July I might just have to take you up on that! John, I'd be embarrased to have you come up fishing with the way my luck has been going!

Well, last Saturday, armed with some secret techniques and a honey hole or two that some of you so kindly provided by PM, I headed out to try to catch a walleye. 4 hours of fishing not a single fish landed, in fact not even one on and lost. Sunday morning it was raining and blowing like crazy but by noon the rain had stopped so away I went again. When we got out onto lake there were waves 4+' high, the boat is safe enough but that is just plain uncomfortable so I decided to head up the river toward Lindsay. Tried trolling, bouncing twister tails rip jigging, 3 more hours, not one fish. Last night, I got home from work, had an early supper, grabbed a can of Ice tea and headed out, I was on the water by 5:30. Conditions couldn't have been better, a light breeze, a slight chop on the water, a wisp of cloud to the West, just enough to shade the sun. I headed out to a secret honey hole that someone had kindly shared with me. I did everything but empty my tackle box into the lake. Everything from 3' to 14' of water, weed beds to weed edges, 3 hours, 1 rock bass. I finally decided to finish off the evening back over here in Goose Bay, I think I might have had one hit that felt like it could have been a walleye but that was it, I finally packed it in at 9:30 and came home empty handed AGAIN! Now I have to tell you I have a lot of tackle and I recently purchased a whole lot more based on some of the reports I had gotten. I now own so many bucktails that I actually had to add a whole new tray to my tackle box, and if I don't have $750.00 worth of plastics and just about every colour of jig head they make I'll be surprised. That doesn't even come close to the number or trolling lures, worm harneses, and other odds and ends. Believe me, I have been trying them all! To top it all off I'm still getting reports from other members of 20 fish catches in 2 hours. Kids limiting out, secret spots where you can almost walk on the fish they are so thick. Anyone got any CIL wobblers they would like to part with? So, I need a goat, a cow, a pig, a chicken, and a virgin to sacrifice to the fishing gods (Ok maybe not the virgin, I'll just take her fishing with me ). I don't know what I've done to anger the fishing gods but it sure must have been a doozie.

Yes, you can do it, just make sure you take some oil with you. Once you have started the motor, let it run for a minute, then stop it and re check the oil. If they have changed the filter but not run the engine after wards, the filter will need to fill with oil. Before you go to all that trouble, I would call the shop where you had it serviced and ask them about it although 1.5" does sound like a lot of extra oil it may not be that much once the filter is filled.

52 Years! That is really something to be proud of! Congrats to you both!

You are very right, and to be honest with you until the neighbour started trying to cause them all kinds of problems "stopping them from going on land they thought was theirs" (we won't go into all the details) and just started being a jerk in general, the kids wouldn't have cared a bit. Live and let live! Right now, they aren't out to sue anyone, they just want things straightened out properly. They bought a piece of property in good faith. Turns out that the neighbour that tried to give them a hard time built his house on their property. All they want to do is find out what their legal rights are and get this mess resolved. They paid for 90 acres of land, they pay their taxes on 90 acres of land, I think it is only fair that they should be allowed to use their 90 acres of land. With regard to turning this into something nasty and sueing everyone and their brother, forget it, we aren't that kind of people. If the neighbour is at fault here the only thing the kids want is a fair resoulation. They are not ready to run a bulldozer through his house, they have no desire to burn it to the ground, but if they are entitled to some compensation, then that is all they would like, that and the neighbour to back off and let them live their lives in peace.

I guess one of the biggest problems is the cost of a survey especially for first time buyers, I know that in my kids case they had been working and saving for years to be able to buy a place of their own. When this place became available they had two choices, put their money up or miss out on it and wait for another year or two while prices kept going up. It took every penny they had saved (well mom and dad might have helped a bit with a "wedding present") but they managed to scrape enough together to get the place. A survey would have cost them a few thousand more that they just didn't have although in hind sight it probably would have been money well spent but the choice was; get the place or don't. Fences don't mean anything either, when we bought this place we got a survey done just to be sure. Turns out the fence is actually 2" inside of our property line and 8" inside down at the water. Doesn't sound like much if you have a good neighbour but remember water front property is assessed at $1200.00 extra per linear foot. so if you are paying taxes on something your neighbour is using and enjoying????? I don't think anyone has done anything knowingly wrong here, I find it hard to believe that the neighbour would have knowingly built on their property had he realized it was but wouldn't he have had to get a building permit? I know when I built my boat house I had to show where it was going to be with respect to lot lines and everything, I had to insure it was a minimum 48" from the lot line. The kids neighbour only built his house about 6 years ago. Questions aplenty, answers will come in due time!

Boy, I really appreciate all the replies, opinions, and help with this. JohnF I will wait until you have a chance to talk to your lawyer friend. The kids don't have a lot of money, and they wouldn't have even pursued this if the neighbour hadn't been such a jerk lately. They bought this older farm and have been working hard at fixing it up so they are always broke and tired. I have sent my daughter an email with a link to this site/thread (and a copy of your PM JohnF) (partially edidted to remove the personal note you put in it for me). From the sound of it this isn't going to be quite as easy as going to the neighbour and telling him he either has to buy the portion of their land that his buildings and such are on or remove them. In all my years on this board I have never had anyone offer me advice in bad faith and I always appreciate all views and opinions, they are what help me make informed decisions and often help me think outside the box. I think you owe Wayne an apology!

Yes, they did purchase title insurance but I wasn't sure (and neither were they) what the next step should be, that is why I wanted to see what advice was available here and try to get the name of a good lawyer. Randy, do you happen to have contact information for Evi McDonald? so far I have told them not to say anything to anyone until they talk to a lawyer but I would like to get as much information for them as I can.

Kids bought a farm in the Sudbury area. Next door neighbor turned out to be a real jerk, has been giving them a hard time for a while now about anything and everything. The kids didn't get a survey done when the bought the place, they couldn't afford it but they suspected that some of the neighbor's buildings were actually on their property. They just had a "building location survey done". Turns out the neighbor's house, septic system, deck, and a couple of out buildings are actually on their property. The kids want to know exactly what their legal rights are and how they should proceed from here. I have a feeling the neighbor isn't going to like what I think might be going to happen! Can someone give me the name of a good lawyer in the Sudbury area who should be able to stear them in the right direction. JohnF ever run into anything like this before? Any advice anyone?

Can't help you with Grey Owl camp but I have heard some good things about them. The trip I had up there a few years back was fantastic but we roughed it and just camped. I will say one thing, I was glad I had someone with me that knew the lake because there are some rocks in places you would never expect rocks!

As far as the power going out, our fire place will work even if the power is off and at -25 it will still keep the house comfortable, also, our kitchen stove still works so we just put on a big pot of stew or whatever, I bake some bread and who cares about the power! Besides, if you love to cook like I do gas stoves are so much nicer to use! Now last year I did buy a 6500 watt generator because no power = no running water, I had an electrician wire it into the panel and all I have to do is flip 3 breakers and turn a key and we have power to run the whole house. As far as the cost of propane, I negotiate every fall for a fixed price and usually end up paying about $0.05 a liter less than the going rate. We use about 4000L per year and because of the kitchen stove and water heater, our hydro bills are typically less than $110.00 a month average. We have 1500 sq' on each of two floors. Wood is nice, no doubt about it but as Wayne pointed out so well, there is a ton of work involved. One of the reasons I made the change is that if something happened to me, if I got sick or anything Sue would not have been able to haul the wood and keep the fires going. It also makes it difficult to go away in the winter time. Anyway Lew, I am sure you have thought this out well and you will enjoy the wood heat and the smell of the smoke. It is a comfortable warm heat! If I was young enough and had the time I might still be heating with wood.

Lew, when we moved in here there was a beautiful wood burning fire place in the basement family room. First year I cut and hauled wood and bought wood. It was beautiful, the sound of the fire as sparks flew out onto the floor, the smell of the smoke but it was also a lot of work and not very efficient. By the third year I had put an insert in the fire place, much more efficient but you still had the sound of the fire and the smell of the smoke. Mind you hauling, stacking, carrying the wood and cleaning up were still there. Year 6 I had the wood insert removed and a gas insert put in, The fire is still beautiful but now when I want it I flip a switch, it is on a thermostat so no more having to open a window in Jan. because it got too hot. No more bugs and stuff from the wood or pails of ashes to have to haul and it still works even if the hydro goes out. I have now converted my whole house to propane, cook stove, water heater, furnace, fireplace, and my two BBQ's are hooked up to the main tank. Total gas bills less than $3000.00 a year. You might want to re consider before you go out and buy all that wood.

I think that is high Lew, I haven't bought wood for a few years now but the going rate for cut, seasoned split hard wood was about $225.00 a bush cord when I did. You could also look at buying a truck load of logs and cutting and splitting it yourself!
