Do people still use Mr Twister brand plastics ?
porkpie replied to buick14's topic in General Discussion
I use mister twister ripple tails or whatever they are called almost every time I jig for pickerel, that or a fin s fish. I'm a pretty intermediate fisherman in my opinion, but I've been using them for 35 years or more at least. -
It will doubtless be existing regulations being enforced, similar to when the Humber river dam signs went up in Etienne Brule park and enforcement started. Before that it was a free for all.

I am sure a lot of fishermen or boaters could say the same about kayakers and canoeists. Many take little to no precautions in the way of flags or lights, and then fish in front of busy ports or boat ramps, I have witnessed it personally numerous times now. I actually had to talk to a dude about it on a local reservoir parked a few hundred yards in front of the ramp in a green kayak at dusk with no lights or flag. It's easy to cast aspersions and sling names around but there are just as many offenders in both camps!

They are posting Wilkes as well.

I'd do it if you are s very competent canoist and you light your vessel very well so that guys like me that fish stagers can clearly see you when leaving the ramp. Some of our best fishing over the years has been just outside of casting distance before dawn or at dusk. Not every day has the lake wavy. If you get a day with light north winds and the night before hasn't been incredibly windy then you can get some pretty flat water! You will need a high mounted white light, and make sure it's high enough that your body can't obstruct it when your sitting on your seat. It will also be interesting landing a Chinook in a canoe, they aren't as stable as SOT kayaks.

Truck purchasing advice regarding torque- NF
porkpie replied to the spirit of fishing's topic in General Discussion
Most folks experience regret when they purchase a pickup truck that 1) doesn't have a V8 and 2) doesn't have 4 wheel drive. Not all, but most! Just some input from a long time truck owner, who's buddies have tried every cost saving measure that ended in buyers remorse. -
Nice bow!

I'm willing to bet some squeaky wheel on the lake got onto parks to post a sign; and there was probably a big uproar and it was shouted down, and sign removed. Despite their being some regulation somewhere, I have launched there numerous times and never seen a sign, and no one has ever breathed a word about HP restrictions on that lake to me. I am pretty sure bowslayer spends a lot of time there, he'd probably know.

Ok, it,s time for a conversation , PROS/CONS ,on rod/reels. PRICES
porkpie replied to misfish's topic in General Discussion
I like shiny things too. I have a few rods that are customs and close to the 1k mark, few bucks into some float reels. I also have a bunch of tekotas, saltists, some stradic ci4's a core etc. Every one of them aside from the custom rods has been bought either used or on clearance for peanuts compared to new. If you watch classifieds or Kijiji closely and have patience you can get some stunning deals on items that would otherwise be pretty expensive. I can't afford that stuff at full price with family commitments etc. The kids are more important than my hobbies. But I've amassed some pretty quality gear just by being patient and jumping on deals when they show up. I like the quality stuff because as mentioned it will outlast for the most part and I'll still be fishing with it in 20 years. There's a breaking point though, I can't see how guys spend 1k on a production run spinning reel, but it's their money and I don't fault them for spending it if they can afford it! The only item that I consider spending retail price (sale price:) on is electronics. Good electronics on the boat has changed the way I fish over the years, from GPS and the ability to mark fish and return to the exact location to being able to target specific marks, GPS and quality sonar are a must for me. Same with a GPS enabled trolling motor, if mine died today I'd be out tomorrow to buy another one. Those 2 items are almost worth paying full retail. -
I've owned a pair of tite lock clamp one for long time. I've gone so far as to run 10 colours of core down the chute on my old boat with the drag set lightly. Never took a king off it, but numerous bows, rod holder held up fine. I probably wouldn't run divers off of one. They only have one little clamp while its sturdy, diver put a fair amount of pressure on the holder and hits are some of the most savage for whatever reason. I've had a set of salty double clamps that I've had almost as long for that. I'm running them on Berts track mounts now. Tite locks still the lightest for a canoe in my opinion.

Played with my new Raymarine Dragonfly 4 today
porkpie replied to Raycaster's topic in General Discussion
I've run a raymarine A78 since the spring of 2015. It's been an excellent unit. The only thing I don't like is that the lighthouse software can be a little bit laggy when switching screens. Otherwise, great sonar and GPS is fast and accurate. Even a 7 inch screen can be a bit small at times when on split so I added an elite 7ti this spring. It's nice having sonar on one and GPS on the other. Once you get the tablet figured out you'll have a nice set up! -
I think it's a fine idea!

A fair number of the motorcycle collisions I've seen, the driver of said cycle has been a pail of soup in a skin sack. Like everything in life, you pays your money and you takes your chances! Best of luck with the decision!

Go the with titelock clamp on suggestion. Just keep a couple pieces of wood in the canoe to use as backers as well as some neoprene to prevent scuffing. I used them on my first canoe, still have em. I mounted Scottys to my current canoe but they are more permanent as the bases are through bolted.

Call the park office, they would be able to tell you that. I doubt it though as there is absolutely nothing listed online and the park website says nothing about HP restrictions on stormy and considering they maintain a pretty nice launch there you'd think it would say something.

heads up great deal from foodland for ontario parks
porkpie replied to bow slayer's topic in General Discussion
This is for provincial parks, not national. The free pass giveaway at the start of the year was for Parks Canada national parks only, not Ontario parks. -
There is saving money and there is foolhardiness. Not everyone that chooses to go their own general maintenance is a fool. My vehicles go in to our local shop at least 2 to 3 times per year either for an inspection or some work I won't mess with. I have no complaint paying someone for skills beyond my reach, but I enjoy doing my own basic maintenance and save some bucks as well. To each their own!

Trolling Motor Battery, Starter Battery and Electronics
porkpie replied to fisherman7's topic in General Discussion
Run your electronics off of your starting. The trolling motor batteries should be just for the motor. -
I agree with you Art, met many good people south of the border. I always enjoy my fishing trips in the States!

I do my own oil changes, but the shop I go to if you get an oil change it will be done by a licensed mechanic with many years experience.

Anybody know of any boat trailer repair shops ?
porkpie replied to buick14's topic in General Discussion
If you don't mind travelling, I'm pretty sure Fergus welding can fix it. 197 Beatty line north. 519-843-3722. They made me up a new axle when I bent mine and they where fast and very helpful. It's an old school shop. Mind you I have no idea where you live?
