So I guess if I told you about the GIRL I met who was working at that time for the MNR ... who told me about her tactics (which involved raising ducklings for said specific purpose - and of course I was completely tongue tied - mostly because she was a customer) ... but this was absolutely not a joke ... ah never mind - you wouldnt believe it anyways ... although I gotta admit for just a fleeting moment I thought she was the HOTTEST !!!!!

I use one of those big blue plastic storage bins $15 at Zellers or Walmart... the lid keeps the rain out and the big deep bin ensures that even with a foot of rainwater in the boat from an overnight downpour - everything inside stays dry (which includes cold weather and rain gear as well as tackle ... not to mention snacks)... saves three trips to and from the boat with all the odds and ends I throw in there ... and the lid is at just the right height for keeping a plano box or two out and handy for the day ... I'd never go back to the old 'waterproof' bag inside a garbage bag for backup.

As dey say in Kaybek ... its depennn on da situation of dat What I like to call the "witching hour" can happen at almost any time of the day (although it does seem to happen both early in the morning and around sundown most often) ... the secret is to be there when it happens ... and when it does - you'll know ... everything will suddenly come alive ... the birds, the bugs and of course the fish ... it'll last anywhere from 15 minutes to half an hour and just as suddenly as it turned on it will turn off again ... thats whay us die hards spend so many hours on the water ... those few magical minutes make the whole day worthwhile !

Black Whooley Buggars ... on top ... trolled swiftly ... just saying

I've never stayed there, but I have rented their boats and found them to be good folks and good boats and very reasonabley priced. Be careful on the way out from their docks though its pretty shallow and there can be quite a strong current. If you head out following the marker buoys towards Marshall Island you'll find some big (giant) girls cruising (of course its a few months or so before thats permitted) ... Pike are pretty much everywhere .. cast towards shore/weeds with anything white or silver and you should get at least a follow... out in the main channel there are some big channel cats and ling to be had ... and when the season opens there's no shortage of big Bass. Pickeral are little harder to find but they are in there.

Great Lake's ecosystem continues to change
camillj replied to spinnerbaitking's topic in General Discussion
And if the perch population truly is growing in Georgian bay ... some of those big girls (Musky) might well get up into the mid-high 50's and the days of double digit Pickeral may be just around the corner in too ! -

Catching OOS Fish By Accident
camillj replied to Dontcryformejanhrdina's topic in General Discussion
Pike and Musky gear are actually pretty much the same (given the same size fish and the same conditions) ... and don't be afraid to figure 8 it ... its a perfectly legitimate Pike strategy too ... I've got some pretty big pike over the years ... more often than not without ever seeing the follow ... of course if you DO see the follow and its a Musky ... thats a little different In fact one of my biggest pike was when I was 'demonstrating' a figure 8 to a friend - without even casting first - the 40"+ sucker came out of the depths and slammed me on about 18" of line ... just about wet myself - and he became an instant believer Anyhow good luck and tight lines ! -
And it wont cost ya nuffin if ya got's the right second-mate (hint hint

Billionaire US Citizen blocking access to public lakes
camillj replied to a topic in General Discussion
Thanks for acknowledging the validity of my perspective on this discussion in the context of my own experiences. To answer your question (as best I can) - no I do not believe anyone should be allowed to interfere with public property for their own benefit. BUT - I cannot presume to have enough information about the facts of that persons specific rights or actions or to know whether what he did was wrong - I would be surprised however that the town (government) would say he is within his rights if he was really interefering with public access to public property. And it was be a very dangerous precedent to condone anyone taking vandalous action based on their own suppositions. Is it not possible that an invalid assumption has led us all down the garden path ? The point of describing my situation was to show that sometimes things aren't what they appear (especially when for whatever reason you wish that they were). -
Good karma Lew .. hope she has a great time !

Anyone have experience in a travel power transformer
camillj replied to Bondar's topic in General Discussion
Was in Veradero a couple years ago and didn't take my step-down converter with me ... honestly don't even recall if it was actually 220V .. but we had no issues with the phones/cameras/video (iphone, blackberry etc) ... but I don't think the Mrs' brought her blow dryer .. most places nowadays provide that stuff in the room. -
Billionaire US Citizen blocking access to public lakes
camillj replied to a topic in General Discussion
Not at all Grimace ... and I apologize if I wasnt clear ... I wasn't speaking to the issue of the 'billionaire' who apparantly was told by the authorities that he had the right to block the road (which I can only assume means he owns or has exclusive rights to it) ... I was responding to ZWB's comment where he quoted my original post. I know first hand that there is often a lot more going on than the observers assumptions might be aware of ...we have had similar issues in our access road and parking area (which our club built on our own private property - and which we maintain with our own money (despite also contributing annually to the 'public access road maintenance' - We keep our private access road gated (and many might have assumed it was once public because before we upgraded the road (and built a proper parking area and repaired/replaced culverts) we never did have a gate - but we do now - mostly to ensure we have somewhere to park legally and to prevent the abuse (trash/garbage, tree cutting for fires etc) by people who have nothing invested in the area ... this in no way prevents access to the lake since there IS another public road controlled/maintained by the province... but it is about 40 minutes shorter 4 X 4 drive from the main road so some people think they have the right to vandalize our gate and trespass across and park on our private property to fish the lake). We are not rich, we are not arrogant, we do not believe we OWN the lake or the fish in it ... but we do own the land and we have put a great deal of energy and money and thought into our improvements - all with government approval ... so if you see a gate across a road I suggest it would be more appropriate to call the township ... find out who owns the land and ASK them NICELY for permission to cross their property ... and respect their decision if their answer is no ... who knows, you might even make a new friend. -
Looks like and old-school ice fishing rod to me ... how long is it ?

It's not ... I just filled up for $1.36 (Etobicoke)... not sure where all the media-hype is coming from ... or maybe we just havent seen it yet ... but it seems to me a few years ago we saw a 10 - 15 cent swing almost every Friday ... and while we all complained about it , there were MUCH bigger problems for millions of people (just ask all the folks who's houses were suddenly 'under water' and couldnt get their mortgages renewed). On a completely different note I really am struggling to understand the rationale of sitting in line for 2 hours (as the media said thousands did the other day) to save $8 or $10 before the big price increase ... I'd think that if the price is going up anyway then its really only a one-time saving on your first tank of gas... and surely everyone's time is worth more than $4 or $5 /hour (that's less than minimum wage)... am I missing something here ?

That is completely true .. while it is still crown land ... BUT when the government decides to sell it (whether or not we agree it is a good idea)... and collects what it deems to be fair price for it ... and then starts charging the owner property taxes on it .. then everyone else gets the benefit of those tax dollars ... in exchange for giving up enjoyment of that land - otherwise why would anyone buy anything from anyone (especially the government) ?
