I agree with ch312 I have an assault weapon, I bought it because it was cheap and fun to play around with, there's no way to mount a scope, although it would be fine for hunting big game it may look nasty but there's not much difference between it and a 308 or 30-06 semi-auto hunting rifle with a similar magazine

Like Drifter said, there's a good chance for Bowfin in Southern Georgian Bay, ie Honey Harbour, Severn Sound burbot (ling) are often caught while ice fishing for lakers, they often show up around dusk, close to the bottom, Haliburton LT lakes and Lk Temegami are good places there's plenty of white bass and white perch in Hamilton Harbour

as for ice quality, you'll be fine, I bet there will be 10" on smaller lakes up there this weekend

some guys are likely more knowledgeable, but do medium aggressive jigging, about 3 foot lifts, a hit could happen anytime (at the top, on the drop, on the rise) for the minnows, powder snow is a great insulator against freezing tenting eh?, you guys are hardcore, post a trip report when you get back, sounds like a cool adventure

they're a hybrid but fish them more like brookies, I would suggest 6 to 15 feet of water like JDS said, I wouldn't bother going out to 40 feet if you're fishing shallow, fish the middle of the water column you're allowed 2 lines too, it may be worth it to bring in some minnows and tip-ups

I agree with LH, if both species are important, than Kushog would be the best bet. Lakers may be a little tough on Kushog though. 12 Mile also has both species, if it's mainly pike you're after, Horseshoe likely has the biggest population. If you're going to Haliburton, I'd say don't bother with the pike and target lakers, or other trout/ char species

in point #3, you mention stocking couldn't hurt there is some science that says stocking into a naturally reproducing population can hurt, it can distort the genetics if they were stocking from Lk Nip fish (I assume they would), some science argues that the stocking by-passes the natural selection process and can hurt the population I know in Haliburton the MNR doesn't stock natural lake trout lakes with lakers even if the population is low and struggling

I'm going to fish a fairly small, local derby in a few weeks on a Haliburton lake for lakers. Does anybody have any tips to offer on how to catch larger fish? The bigger fish I've caught, seem to be flukes and don't come consistently. I typically fish 65 to 80 FOW, minnows, jigging spoons and tubes For the derby I'd be willing to try something different with the hopes of getting a biggie!

you should be fine, the forecast looks generally cold too the thaw got rid of the powder snow on the ice, now the temps should make some thicker ice

not that it's the right thing to do, in the Ontario Hunting Course, they said take your shot (big game, deer, moose etc), then stay in you tree stand for 1/2 hour before you go looking for the animal, it's definately different than catching a fish I bonk my fish quickly if I've decided to keep them

not to hijack the thread, I had to be rescued from a canoe trip a few years ago. We didn't have to pay. for walleye, you're in a good chain of lakes, for lakers, you could do better elsewhere
