Star Lk with Lauzon, from the sattelite pics, everything is still ice, Nippissing and Wanapitei are ready to break up so it's headed that way, the weather looks sunny and warm for awhile, so you've got a chance post a trip report if you get to go, looking forward to it
-
checked my spot today (Sunday), even with the sunny, warm weather, it's still too early the all knowing town of Oakville posted a sign saying they've sprayed pesticide for bigweed over my fiddlehead spot, no more picking for me down there at least they took the time to post the sign why not take the time to remove all the garbage strewn everywhere thoughout the woodlot, I guess those educated, civil servants are more knowledgeable than me with respect to managing this shithole called Oakville

it's free to get rid of it at the landfill hazardous waste section
-
no, they're not leeks, I've still got a bunch in my freezer leeks are after fiddlehead season, often during the height of blackfly season the flowers, early trilliums?

leave it but keep an eye on it, the warmer weather should melt it out, you could even tape some black garbage bags around the bottom of the hut to really suck up the sun's heat

Minden/ Haliburton Ice Out lakers this weekend.
chris.brock replied to snagmaster's topic in General Discussion
Most lakes are open water (from the sattelite pics and Singingdog's report). It can be tough fishing the first few days after ice-out, the fish could be anywhere, I think you'll mark quite a few deep. I like the flat lining 2 or 3 weeks after ice-out, when things warm up a bit and some shallow bays are warmer than the main lake trolling a spoon is a pretty common technique, Williams, Mepps Cyclops, Cleo give it a shot though, it will feel great to get back in the boat edit- 4x4 bassin beat me do it, the post came up while I was hunt and peck typing, funny -
Looking for an ice update T-Bay, Nakina, Armstrong area?
chris.brock replied to chris.brock's topic in General Discussion
Washi on the Albany River you were swimming, we were blasting the woodstove and wishing we had brought our floater suits in the mornings, everyone would pretend they were still sleeping so they didn't have to leave their warm sleeping bag and start the fire in the cabin a first for us, we flew beer out! too cold to drink'em I know that wasn't related to ice-out, the ice was long gone, it was just a brutal week for weather -

Abamasagi Basskicker said 3 feet of ice in Manitouwadge (pretty far south of Nakina) on April 18th We got burned last year on the opening weekend, cold, snowing sideways, the water dropped into the low 40's and the fish totally shut-down, I mean bundle up, go out and catch zero maybe we're just a little gun shy -
I checked a spot here in Oakville today (Thursday), they haven't changed since last Thurs., they're still not pickable For the opener on the creeks, the fiddleheads are usually hard to find because most have fanned out into ferns, it shows what a late spring it's been this year

Minden flooding and some other pics NF
chris.brock replied to chris.brock's topic in General Discussion
no problem Mirro there was some decent sattelite pictures yesterday, looks like the lakes are pretty well ice free if the beer store flooded out, then it would really be a disaster! -
yeah, the same as what I saw, visable, tight to the stump, and hard to pick without wrecking them in the process
-
checked a fiddle head spot here in Oakville on Saturday, some where visable but still curled up tight, too early, likely later this week will better

Ice Out, Turn Over & Implications on Fishing
chris.brock replied to mirogak's topic in General Discussion
I think the ice will be gone around Wilberforce next weekend (except for maybe some chunks in larger lakes), I just got back from Minden and was surprised what a difference last week made. -

friend with a truck and chain and it popped right out -
The rain caused a sink hole in my driveway which I promptly got stuck in, right up to the axle. The shovel was futile. I had to get a neighbor to pop me out. A deer browsing on some of the new growth, taken right off my front deck. I felt bad for the people of Minden, especially with idiots like me taking pics. I would have volunteered to help but there was nothing to do. I didn't see it, but the hydro dam up river, holding back Minden Lk, was getting over-run with water coming over and around it. There was some worry it might let go. the beer store, still open, but with water in the back I put a marker stick in the sand on Gull Lk. The water rose 5" overnight from Sunday to Monday

anybody use old motor oil for their chainsaw bar oil? NF
chris.brock replied to chris.brock's topic in General Discussion
burning it in the woodstove mostly, some at the campfire funny sidenote, I remember meeting this group of campers near Opasatika, they had their outdoor campfire in a wash machine tub, and would pour their used motor oil into the bottom of the tub to keep the big logs burning, it worked perfect, a steady, big flames fire environmentally and fume wise, probably not good -
the home invasion stuff is different up here in some US states, you can pop somebody for being on your property, with no repercussions, very few questions asked a buddy's neighbor in Oakville ON, woke up to a guy in his basement, a struggle ensued (no guns, just fists), the home owner subdued the intruder and later had charges brought against him for assaulting the intruder who broke into his house
