Boat trim hydraulics failing in the cold
Old Ironmaker replied to AKRISONER's topic in General Discussion
On my 115 HP Mariner and most Mercs the relief valve for tilt/trim is on the side of the engine and it is a large flat head screw. I carry a snub nose wide flat head screw driver in the boat. So far never had to use it , knock on wood, but my buddy needed it to tilt up his 90 Mariner at the ramp. No way that boat was coming out and towed without tilt. -
Pick me up on the way big guy please. It sure sounds like great time. It might get me fired up enough to hit the hardwater this year. Went to Nipp mid week last January and even though we only got 2 keepers amongst the 6 of us we had a blast and drank and ate like Royalty. I brought 6 big Erie Pics from the freezer for a fish fry on the ice and fed the young couple in the ice bungalow next to us. And for a laugh I fried up some dead shiners as an appetizer. And Big Janko ate a handful, he is a handful himself!!!!Wanted to race a CO for sled ownerships. I promised the CO he wasn't driving anything that day. Some times ice fishing has nothing at all to do with dropping a line down a hole.

The article goes onto explain the angler got not just 1 outside Cleveland which is a rarity but he hooked a second Musky that broke him off. What are the odds? It also said the angler plans on mounting his 40 some odd incher. Didn't say anything about a replimount (new word). Too bad he had to kill it.

Thanks Paul, yes Tich did a great job both using the brad nailer once she got the hang of it, she loves it, as well as decorating. The amazing thing here was after the storm we had a sandy beach again. We haven't had beach for 3 years. It means your side of the lake or east or west of us had higher shoreline like we had on the 31st and 1st. They call it " the bathtub effect." When the south shore of the lake is getting pounded the north shore levels drop and vice versa. Very nice Musky Pigeontroller. Like I said only a few reports I have read or heard personally of Musky catches in Long Point Bay or the western basin. Musky guys are tight lipped. It's a lot of work and expense to target those things. Heck those bricks you guys toss at them are 20 bucks or more. I don't blame them for being members of a secret society.

Just watched again the movie about Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody. Like most movies I get more the 2nd time around and if I like it the 3rd, 4th or more. I was never a real fan until Freddy Mercuries death and then seemed to enjoy the music but more importantly came to respect it. Wayne's World was basically Queen to me until this Oscar winning performance came out. Remi Malek deserved the Oscar he got for best actor. I remember him in "Band of Brothers" that he did a great job in as well. He was the soldier in Easy Company that took the gold teeth out of the dead Japanese soldiers, also a true story about the 101st Airborne in WW2, sorry I digress, again. My former wife was a huge fan. She flew to Chicago if I recall to see a concert in the early 80's with her girl friends, maybe? My wife today really loves the music of Queen. She was in High School when the band was going strong. I think we generally tend to much more enjoy latter on in life the music we had growing up too. Mine were everyone from The Who to James Brown, Herb Albert and Sly and the Family Stone, including the Beatles that were still together when I hit H.S. I can't find a time in music history stronger than the late 60's and early 70's. Below is something I found that clears up some fact from fiction between the flic and real life. I don't know how accurate the article is as I have not vetted the author. I do intend on buying my wife Mercury's memoir "Mercury and Me" for her to read and I intend on reading it as well. Just some info for you Queen fans, there are more than a few here I'm sure. https://slate.com/culture/2018/10/bohemian-rhapsody-fact-fiction-freddie-mercury-movie-accuracy.html

2019-2020 Hockey Thread
Old Ironmaker replied to DRIFTER_016's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
I really enjoy reading your posts guys. But I have to ask. Are we talking about the playoffs around the time that there are leaves on the trees that haven't lost the leaves from this year? Or is it Leafs? One of the reasons I stopped being a bonified Hockey fan was when I realized the gardens were planted and I already had a dozen rounds of Golf in and Pickerel season started before the 1st puck of the Stanley Cup was dropped. Oggie, there are going to be more than a few injuries between now and next summer man. -
And a big bag full of cash Bri. We are sitting at a bar in Miami Beach one night many years ago. A boat pulls up. A nice big boat. A crew of about 4 or 5 guys come down the ramp and reboard with their arms with bag fulls of food. It was a nice boat from what we could see. As it pulled away only then did we see the Pete Fountain off shore hanging off a davit arm and a helicopter at the rear. It was a small helicopter. Sometimes a bag of cash ain't enough. I bet there are folks here much happier than the guy that owned it was. No I don't bet I know. edit: of course I have a story or 2 about deck hands. One is about a few scantily clad deck hands that danced in the Ballet in their off hours on a fishing charter out of St. Kitts that isn't for prime time viewing or reading. I wasn't always a crippled up 65 year old crimongeon , and happily married.

I have always wanted to get an old glass cruiser cut the top off and use it as a deck on the shore. Plenty of ideas and time, no energy any longer.

Boat trim hydraulics failing in the cold
Old Ironmaker replied to AKRISONER's topic in General Discussion
I don't know if this will help if the issue is only fluid and weather related. We experienced hydraulic problems after installing a new system on the top of one of our Blast Furnaces in Hamilton On. years ago. The cylinders were moving but crawling. The engineers went to a different fluid that resists cold and it gets cold 300 feet above the bay on Lake Ontario in winter. I believe it is called Askeral. -
I have heard of a few Musky caught by guys fishing Largemouth in Long Point Bay the last few years. I have not heard of anyone targeting them specifically. Talk about Lake Erie news. I was up all night during that 100 year storm on Halloween. Winds were measured to have been gusting at 150 KPH's. Many homes and cottages had up to 4' of water in them and they are 70 or more feet across Lakeshore road from the lake. My buddies large deck that was built by his Dad in the early 60's ended up on the neighbours lawn 4 door down the road. Another pals old place (RIP Big Show) that his daughter now has has an 80' Willow tree in the living room. With all the torrential rain it might be a write off. Numerous friends and neighbours lost shingles and rain soaked through to the drywall. The county brought out the snow graders back hoes and loaders to clear huge logs, pieces of boathouses, boats, boat lifts and decks as well as the foot or more of sand and mud on Lakeshore road. They are still working today scooping out debris in the drainage ditches. We faired pretty well. a dead Ash tree on the bank snapped about 4' above the roots and was stopped from hitting our place by a small branch on a Maple tree or we would have had a major problem. My boat cover was ripped open and when it isn't blowing here I need to get the Zebra Mussels off the seats and dash. Lost a small section of grass on the bank but no big deal, not a shingle lost. When I had the roof done 5 years ago I insisted the contractor fasten all the shingles down as it said in that little piece of paper no one reads when they tear open a bundle. I was up all night, I thought we were. I thought we were on our way to Kansas. We got lucky. By the way or cottage is listed for sale. To see it just Google 16 Hoover Point Lane Selkirk On. My wife did a beautiful job decorating or as they say staging it. My credit card has more damage on it than that storm. Johnny D

Your purchase is all about your budget. Buying slightly used will save you many thousands vs. buying brand new. Glass or aluminum, welded or riveted, many things to consider. This is a great time to buy new though. Winter sales for new boats is a killer for Marine businesses, they do not want to carry over last years inventory, they need cash to survive the winter. I am a StarCraft owner and can't say enough about them and their deep V design. As far as a family friendly as well as fishing boat to trailer you are looking at a minimum 18' aluminum bowrider with full windshield and interchangeable seating in my opinion. Getting into a new 18'er with a 150 4 stroke regardless of manufacturer you are looking at the high side of $50,000.00. Last week I saw a 17' Crestliner side council at my Marine dealer with a 125 4 stroke on sale for 40K. DO NOT consider a Cracker errrrr I should say Tracker. There is no need for me to explain why here just Google Tracker boat problems, there is plenty to read from owners. I strongly suggest you go to iboats.com, join and enter your question. At any given time there can be 100,000 people on that site. Plus they have hundreds of used boats there to check and compare prices.

2 incidents of stabbings on the weekend in Hamilton. 1 was a pre arranged knife fight. The 2nd a home invasion. Both incidents involved teens. I never heard of a single stabbing when I was a teen growing up in Hamilton. A close friends son was stabbed during a fight in Hess Village in Hamilton a few years ago. When will these teens graduate to shootings which happens with regularity in Hamilton amongst other gangs and drug dealers?

Some interesting facts witnesses recount in the minutes leading up to the murder. The authorities must take responsibility for failing this kid. I don't know if it was right or wrong for an adult to confront those that have been charged with murder minutes before the killing. If the school, school board and the Police had have been effective I don't think the adult would have decided to intervene. Where were the Cops? Why weren't they called as soon as the adult was assaulted with pepper spray? Many questions here. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/devan-selvey-stabbing-1.5332475

There shouldn't be the word "cheap"" when talking about arguably the 2nd most important piece of Marine safety equipment, a good PFD being number 1. Nothing much worse than facing a fire and when you pull the pin on an extinguisher and pull the trigger all you have is your you know what in your hands. You wouldn't cheap out on a PFD I would hope. Time to check mine.

I used to say that, but if you pay taxes you can complain about anyone you did or didn't vote for. The 1st time I will be standing behind the cardboard box they call a voting booth deciding who is or isn't getting my vote. Do I vote for the MP locally who can help me best here at home or do I vote for PM? 1st time in many years I am totally undecided. campaigned for the Libs for many years since I was a teen. I missed every debate this year. I had to look online as to who is running here. I don't think I have seen a few dozen signs on lawns. Not much to choose from actually. Not 1 impresses me. A career politician, a retired social worker with zippo experience in law, business or politics and someone that couldn't be bothered to create a website. Plus a few others from obscure parties that are a complete waste of my vote and time, some party called The Retired Peoples of Canada.

It was Aristotle or Socrates that said the exact same thing about the generation of youth in his time. That was a few thousand years ago, many things don't change. We are starting to sound like our parents. My father called us The Pepsi Cola generation or The long haired Hippy Beatles generation. It was Aristotle he said Quote: “The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.”

I finally got it, good one, again. What happened to our Joke of the Day thread? There were some good ones. I need a good laugh in the AM. Everyone does. -
Nice ride. I have always wanted to get one but my wife has zero interest in the lifestyle. I rented one for a week once and headed to Myrtle Beach, she wanted to bail after the 1st night. Maybe I'll just buy yours and go solo. Why may I ask why you aren't going to use it any longer Cliff? If I was single I'd sell my house and hit the road for a few years. Canada spring to late Fall then point the thing until the compass say S and keep it there until I see Palm trees. AQctually I know a widower that does the exact same thing. People he knows will fly to where he is and join him for a few weeks. He has a little electric scooter in the back for shopping etc. perfect.

Update? Seymour Lake (Trent River)- Solider Weed?
Old Ironmaker replied to Cloudy15's topic in General Discussion
I haven't heard that. For some reason I don't check that forum like I used to. Thanks Dave, I'll pass it on. Winds and the lake have been fairly calm the last week, NE winds. 2 guys were out in front of our place this afternoon trolling. Must have been for Smallies I'd guess, they were catching them with regularity. No they didn't get my permission!!!! (I'm just jealous.) -

I got it. Nice dock job. I need to get me one of those guns on the deck. 30 or 50 Cal. Then I would never have to wait in line to launch or dock. At my age and since my Bladder Cancer scare I know every public washroom from here to Hamilton and back. And every not so public dumpster box. I carry a big screw top plastic jug now. I've been stuck in traffic too many times. Now when I gotta go I gotta go 2 minutes ago, no holding it these days, impossible. I always carry a change of clothes in the car, truck, boat and in my Golf bag. One day I needed 2 changes on the way to T.O. airport. That's when I started carrying the plastic jug. A few years ago Big Louie The Dutchman got stuck in downtown T.O. with his wife, he had to go so he got out and went. What are ya' gonna' do? I don't have to tell what Linda said to the poor lout. At least it wasn't a 2 pile!! When I have a bout of diarrhea now I do not leave the house, ever. Experience is a lifetime of mistakes, wisdom is not repeating them. -
Winterizing. Stabil vs run motor dry
Old Ironmaker replied to Tjames09's topic in General Discussion
Great list Sinker, thanks. I see only a couple of stations offer 93 octane, Esso. The rest are all 91 a small few are less. One is down the road in Port Dover, I use that station because it's easy to pull the boat into. I always thought Esso and Shell had higher than 93, guess that might have been in the distant past when I had British sports cars. 67' MGB, 72' TR-6 and a 77' 2+2 E type Jag. None ran well on regular, especially when they introduced lead free. What is aviation fuel?
