Happy New Year to you big guy from the both of us as well to all the good people here at OFC. This past year has been challenging for many of us members here. We almost lost our sister and if there is such a thing as a miracle I was witness to one. She was given last rights in April and we just spoke with her today, she had just come back from a walk with the dogs at the cottage. I told her she owes me for a new black suit I never needed to use.

Anyone ever give this here thingy a giver
Old Ironmaker replied to Moosebunk's topic in General Discussion
Turn it over, it's left hand retrieve right side up. With the specs it should be a nice reel. Sure is nice looking. -
206 provided a link in his post above. (my copy and paste nfg) For anyone here that want's a very layman's explanation of what is the difference between 720 P and up to the 4K systems please read it. I have learned more from that short blog than most everything else I have tried to read because it's understandable for this simple consumer. It should be used as a training tool for some of the pimply face pencil necked geeks that try to impress you at the big box stores with all sorts of techy terminology, obtuse numbers and acronyms. LOL. Notice the LOL please. Hahaha. New year new me.

If you guys ever come across one of those machines and if complete with the replacement tubes even better, grab it. They fetch a good buck on the electronic antique market today.

You guys had a TV ? Actually we did too and got all 12 channels because Hamilton was located smack dab between TO and Buffalo. I was the first person to ever have a TV remote. Actually I had 2. Both younger brothers, they sat next to the TV and I yelled out the channel and they changed them.

Wondering about fees for fishing/hunting licences
Old Ironmaker replied to kickingfrog's topic in General Discussion
I was told 60 for no license. Oh well, maybe time to get a Disability Parking Permit. Only kidding, we must watch what we wish for mustn't we. I've had the application sitting in a drawer for 10 years because I can use the exercise. More than happy to pay just like everyone else. -
Wondering about fees for fishing/hunting licences
Old Ironmaker replied to kickingfrog's topic in General Discussion
It stinks but I know there are good sport fishermen here that would pay $100.00 if need be. From people I have spoken to in the US and Europe our 30 beans is cheap compared to some permits. I have never heard of a retailer charging their own service fee but can understand it. For some the other 60 plus year olds here a question, or others that know, I'm 60 now and figure all I have to show is something with my birth date on it. I don't want to carry around my Passport, drivers licence or Birth Certificate because I know 100% I'll lose them. Will a coloured copy suffice? -
I know a few guys that can't tell the difference between SD and HD, so they say. They are just too cheap to pay for a HD signal me thinks. I would always choose plasma only if it is in a room dark enough because glare is a huge issue on our Plasma. Every make has it's good points and not so good. I can see the difference between HD and 4K, but only in the showroom when they are showing a video on Blue Ray. I asked a sales guy at Best Buy to get a HD broadcast channel up so I can see it in 4K, of course he couldn't because they don't want you to compare, meanwhile all the HD only sets have been set up. Dubious little buggers. My best HD picture comes up when I use my wifes glasses, time to get some for me too.

Ram 1500 Diesel - Mileage Post (NF)
Old Ironmaker replied to hutch4113's topic in General Discussion
Bill M, I am diesel illiterate what is the X5D, Q7 or Q5? Sorry to say the quote feature isn't working on this recently repaired for the third time in 5 months HP laptop . I have never ben a fan of diesel. Having grown up and started driving just at the end of the big 3's era of muscle cars and my guys and I gravitated to the European micro cars i.e. Morgan Garage, Triumph, Fiat, Ford Capri then Audi and Benz there wasn't much exposure to any diesel engines. Buy my younger brother did get the gas guzzler muscle car bug. He bought himself a VW TDI I believe a few years back and pulled up in a sparkling new VW TDI this summer., there's a 180 turnaround. I took it for a little spin along the lake and I was very surprised at what I felt under my right foot. I'm impressed. He is very happy. If they came out with something with 1/2 ton capacity for my towing and hauling needs I might be a customer, maybe. -
Anyone switched from 2 to 4 stroke?
Old Ironmaker replied to Rembrandt100's topic in General Discussion
Maybe I'm lucky but I have zero issues with emission opacity with my 115HP Mariner that will be 20 years old. The only time I see anything is the first start up in the spring. It is very quiet as well. I am happy with fuel consumption, well as happy as one can be pushing a boat around in the water. Plugs once a year and that's about it. Hi test every other tank full. I can easily carry on a conversation at top speed. It is just as quiet as buddy's 90 4 stroke Yamaha. -
Some said earlier always buy boots one size larger, I could not agree more. Good blood circulation is very, very important. A trick a hogger ( train engineer) told me to never wear socks with ribs in them. If you can see the ribs or anything that leaves an imprint on your legs or feet you will have cold feet. Turn the socks inside out and always have the smooth side against your skin. Has worked well for me for many years. The built in steel toe and steel metatarsals we used to wear were not conducive to warm feet so every trick helped. I think I have a line on Bunny Boots near Rochester, I hope.

I still carry a Ping 2 iron in my bag. Great out of the thick weeds if you catch that little sweet spot, and I mean little, it will go further than a rescue. It also works great to pitch and run low into the wind. Sorry about the hi jack. -

While stealthily maneuvering along on Lake Bernard we came across a canoe with 2 beautiful 30 something women sound asleep music blaring, with nothing on but lotion. I didn't have the heart to wake them, my idiot buddy did. He wasn't such an idiot after all as he made a date with one an was MIA that night.

Good posts. Best be safe than sorry. You know it's too thin when you walk by a guys hole 20 feet away and he yells at you because the water is coming up and out his hole. That was Quinte 5 or 6 years ago at Mohawk Point just after New Years. I'll be at the hotel boys driving the waitress batty ordering club sodas, call me when you want a coffee or you are done. The next morning there was 5" of good solid ice. It only takes a few cold nights. Good luck and be smart.

It's a sad day when any small business goes under, no matter where they are, but even sadder when close to home. It's the employees that are hit the hardest, maybe just bought a new home for the family, works everyday to keep the Wolves at bay, just trying to make ends meet, to get let go at anytime is sad, very sad. It always seems to be around the holidays. Business owners know they are done weeks maybe months before and try to stretch it past Christmas often. I know we did get past New Years before closing the doors when we had a small business after I retired. It may be an accounting strategy depending on the fiscal year. I remember handing out lay off notices at the plant December 1st one year, 91' I believe, a few guys here might remember all too well. Here Merry Christmas this is your layoff notice and by the way here is your voucher for a free turkey at Fortino's. Some times knowing the guy well and knowing how they struggled working full time I knew it was going to be very tough for them. Peoples lives are ripped apart. That was something I never wanted to ever have to do again, never. That I will not forget. I want to see any CEO or President of a company personally do that at Christmas, actually hand out a pink slip at anytime and with my big yap told one of them exactly that, it probably cost me many thousands of dollars down the line, actually I was told it did. I better stop my rant right here. I don't know the product but just looking at their website they looked serious. I once attended a meeting and an individual from the bank gave us some numbers that I will never forget. He said of all small business start ups in Ontario 90% will go under within 3 years and of the 10% that remained 60 to 90% of those will go under within the next 2 to 3 years. He had the documentation to quantify his statement. That was in 2006 before the financial crash. I hope they can bounce back somehow and Mr. Zhou's personal matters are resolved as to get the folks back to work as soon as possible but the future of that company is bleak as it appears there is no future. A sad day indeed.

We haven't been to Bear Creek since the Donovan's sold. If it's half as good as when they owned the place is still would be great. Good luck. Let us all know how you make out.

All this talk about gear....
Old Ironmaker replied to lookinforwalleye's topic in General Discussion
Boss, if you tell me here what the lure was I promise to keep it to myself. I know of a group of golfers that are in a league where only clubs made before 1940 are allowed. They even use balls that are manufactured today with the same compression as the old balls were, I think he even said they are feather balls. One of the group is a sales guy at Nevada Bob's and he tells me that the scores on courses that were in use prior to 1940 are very close to what the players handicaps are today. I think it would be both fun and interesting to have a small tournament using pre 70's tackle with mono and see what the results are, 1/2 of the group would not be able to use anything post 80's and the other teams would be able to use anything available on the market today. I picked up a box of old lures at a flea market last summer and they are all or 90% at least pre 80's so I am going to try this coming year. If I get out this winter I can try using an old strumming ice fishing rod I have. Minnows and worms haven't changed much in 35 years. Not related but this Hewlett Packard laptop I am using for the third time after having it sent back t HP for the THIRD time in 5 months isn't working right, again!! Can't use quotes and italics come on without selecting. Anyone want to buy a laptop cheap? And now the quote feature isn't working, again. The frustration is astounding to say the least. -

Great topic. We were just discussing the exact same thing last week. I didn't get my own glass spinning rod and reel until 1979 at the Outdoor Store, still have it. I was always borrowing my brothers Mitchel 300 and used it upside down because I'm left handed. The choice was easy, they had about a dozen to choose from that were reversible. You either spooled it with Trilene or Stren or cheaped out and bought 1000 yards of that blue Crappy tires line. It caught fish and remembering being broken off only 1 time with that set up on Stren 10 pound, 10 pound was my Perch, Walleye, Bass and Pike line, what else would you need? Then on a Nippissing trip, my first ever vacation that was a fishing trip we went into North Bay on a windy day and blew at least $40.00 on a graphite composite rod , still have that come to think of it. As soon as that jig hit bottom I knew then what the difference new technology could make. Then came the used flasher for $300.00. I don't want to know how much I have spent keeping up with the crew in the next boat before I curtailed my spending. Using a paddle at the bow or a long piece of a branch to maneuver the boat in the shallows works great but a 50 pound thrust electric sure makes it easier. Now having said that technology has made many a useless fisherman pretty lucky. We had a problem with a transducer this summer and one of the 20 something kids said something to the effect " well I guess we better pack up now because we can't fish without that thing". I think that statement sums it up. It all depends where you started from. -
I am but the Bills aren't.

It was close. the Dr's didn't think I would make it through the night. Bottom line is the boys and I celebrated a bit yesterday afternoon and I won't drink and die. When they dropped me off my wife said " you are not going anywhere!" Smart lady she is. I guess I'm going to miss my own funeral, again, but thanks for the condolences regardless. Please send money. Sounds like you all had a good time even without the free entertainment.

I was there at 7 and no one showed. I'll try 7 tonight.

That is some serious ink. I like the catfish best. Not for me but I can appreciate the artwork, it's living art. All my tattoos were made by surgeons.
