Nothing wrong with a 5 pound pike. Pike makes a great Brodetto, Italian fish stew you can have on pasta too in a spicy white wine tomato sauce. Even the "Y" bone meat can be processed into fish cakes. The former father in law wouldn't even let a pike into the boat, called them snakes. During the weekly fish fry at the cottage we did up a pike and put in on his plate. He said "now that's what I'm talking about", " It's one of those snake fish Dad", he didn't believe us.

NF-Should winter tires be mandatory in Ontario
Old Ironmaker replied to LostAnotherOne's topic in General Discussion
No. When we got hit last week I was driving along in 4 wheel in my pickup with my knobby winter tires on clean blacktop when I hit a foot or so patch of drifted snow on the 80KPH road. Just missed the ditch. I was going too fast, simple as that. -
In case you forgot...(NF, Music)
Old Ironmaker replied to Pigeontroller's topic in General Discussion
Sad day indeed. Almost everyone knew where they were when it was announced that Monday night or when they heard the terrible news. Howard Cosell made the tragic announcement during a Monday Night Football game I was watching and the crew went silent and as the news spread amongst the fans at the stadium I remember watching people crying in the stands. 30 years, where does time go? -
When Harley Davidson was bought out by AMF, 1967 to 1981, famous for their bowling machines they also weren't going to change anything and they almost deep sixed HD because they were making garbage trying to keep up with the Japanese machines. I think Stratos and Triton will go the way of Pontiac and Oldsmobile.

Best of luck fishing and I hope you don't get antsy about the accommodations. If I've never been and it's not at least 4 star (that system is questionable too)I expect the worse and hope for the best. We never drink any water down south sometimes even here unless it's in sealed bottles. Heck the only thing to drink comes in a bottle that says it's at least 50 proof. Nothing much to be done about the food other than to get your needles ahead of time and never eat the soup. Stay away from any food's sitting on a buffet table, nothing gets tossed, nothing. One of my best trips was a few winters ago and a dozen of us went to Cuba for $600.00 all in except the departure tax, you never know. I bet this ain't your first rodeo just be careful. Have a great trip.

Whats the fish you have always wanted catch?
Old Ironmaker replied to LostAnotherOne's topic in General Discussion
You are not alone Randy, I have a fishing buddy that has been fishing for over 30 years and has yet to catch one. This guy can not keep jumbo perch of his line 2 at a time. Every time it's his turn on the rod here trolling for Pics on Erie, guaranteed a farm animal, every time. Even when he goes out of turn it a BAAAAaaHHH. He's cursed, maybe this year. #2 for me is a Gar. -
Oh man these cookies are reminding me of Moms Christmas Rum balls and making me hungry. Basically a round short bread cookie with big chunks of walnuts and a big amount of Ron Bacardi sprinkled with icing sugar. She hasn't baked in years due to her health. Need to get the recipe for my wife. The only thing I bake is home made Pizza.

Embarrassing/funny moments while fishing....
Old Ironmaker replied to ccmtcanada's topic in General Discussion
won't talk about the time my brother sat on a big ole musky bait out in the Moon River basin. Al three trebles jammed onto his bottom. His wife had to put him in the bed of the p/u truck, laying in his belly on their way to the clinic. Apparently, the doctor was laughing so hard, he had a hard time staying focused! HH That must ouch. Wasn't me but my Uncle and I fishing the Niagara on the US side, he directs me to what I think is the hospital in North Tonawanda after he sits on a 3 treble Rappala, we pull into the parking lot and it's the Vets. He says " do you know what they charge at the emergency here nephew?" Vet says " where did you get yourself this time Angelo?" He wasn't embarrassed one little bit. -
I was going to say I hope you got a sunburn. But all I can say is way to go. You sure hammered them. I'm just jealous. That place has sure changed in 40 years since I was first there, We used to go to Puerto Escondido, no one but the locals were there then. That boat you chartered would have been a yacht compared to some of the scows I rented in the 70's .I had an Uncle from California that retired there and lived like a king on a small pension. Good going sir those are some nice fish. The guides that we did hire for deep water wouldn't let us release anything when we headed out to deep for the big fish. Never got a bill fish and we were able to go out by ourselves without a guide then and kept fish to eat and give to the locals. That's a great trip and great report, thanks..

Whats with the price of pork spare ribs
Old Ironmaker replied to mr blizzard's topic in General Discussion
When your buying side ribs it's 1/2 bone and gristle, or more, don't buy it. And if any butcher says they throw it out they lie, that's what sausages are made of, sticky pork. Just today I saw a small piece of outside round, not inside, outside, maybe 6" long, 4" across and 1/2" thick. $5.75 at Food Town in Cayuga and we have beef farms this way. WHAT!!!! I eat that much taste testing. I don't know how a family with kids can even afford medium ground beef today buying from the grocery store. Last week whole chickens on at $1.99, bought 10. Once and a while pork loin on at $1.99, bought as many as they had in the display and waited for the butcher to package 5 more. Cut them in 3 pound pieces. When they have eye of the round on sale buy them all, add some fat I get from the butcher and make ground beef. The boys and I are splitting on a 1/2 beef next week from a local guy. Who can afford food today, veggies ain't cheap either. $3.99 for Red Peepers, anything imported is nuts, come on man. 4 bucks for rye bread??? I told my wife last month if this keeps up we will be skinny soon. Just today a local farmer told us they are concerned with cattle rustlers believe me or not. Think about it, it might be more lucrative than selling dope and legal to have possession. I can hear it now, " Your Honor the accused was in possession of a pig with the intent to traffic". -
I see Homeless Despot has heated outerwear now that runs on a Dewalt cordless battery. Do they have heated boots too?

Yea I thought maybe he had a bunch of kids to feed too, that I understand. But the late model SUV tells me different. I have had to keep a few big smallies here, but gave them away, I watch them spawn from my deck. No way I could eat one of my pets either. If it was a matter of not having food, watch what I will keep to feed my family. And I hear Sheepshead are good done right. I have a neighbor that will take any I catch and appreciates it. If the price of meat goes any higher who knows what we will be chomping on soon. Lots of squirrels here, for now! Hey honey, squirrel,,,, er I mean Rabbit tonight.

Thanks, going down to western NY Sunday to see family, will check beforehand. Those are great boots, might have to buy more than a few pair, I know I can flog them here for sure.

I guess I'm in the minority here, I'm somewhat surprised. I wonder why someone with a non resident license can't possess one? Or any resident a Sturgeon. I'm not being holier than thou, I just don't agree with keeping any trophy fish, be it a Bass, Walleye, Pike or Musky. I can't believe a fish that old can taste any good anyway. Just my opinion. Actually had Deer and Walleye today and it was great. And no I don't belong to P3TA.

The Kamiks I just bought sure are toasty but those white Bata US military are the best I have ever borrowed when my feet nearly froze in my $150.00 Sorrels ice fishing. Can't find them around Hamilton. Bata shoes had a Hamilton factory in the 80's I think, now I can't find any, any leads folks? I would love a pair.

What is your favourite Xmas Carol/music?
Old Ironmaker replied to limeyangler's topic in General Discussion
I'm not the most religious guy around but that demons face along with anything to do with Christmas is a sacrilege. I can't understand a word said and don't care to actually. I don't get it. Am I alone here? -
Why any Musky is allowed to be kept is beyond me. Time for the MNR to join the 21st century maybe. Sickening to watch this duffus drag a trophy fish to his truck. Is this as bad as the guy clubbing one to death, dead is dead? http://www.chathamdailynews.ca/2014/12/12/fishing-ethics-clash-on-thames-river[/quote
