Huzzaba, I think Chris is talking about using the unit as an open hearth fireplace, not a closed wood burning insert like you might have. Yours may provide heat to the home whereas a open hearth unit "sucks" heat from a building envelope. The heat loss created can be very high. If yours is not a enclosed stove with or without a glass window you may feel ambient heat in the room but it actually draughts heat from the dwelling as I have explained above. It feels nice but is not economical in the least.

I think got it Geoff. The total diameter from bottom rubber to top of rubber is close due to the thickness of the tire being much less? A 15" wheel and 8" of rubber is the same as a 20" wheel and 3" of rubber.

Weeds, yes in order to meet code today the cost to upgrade to a new chimney liner, transition box, new insert etc. can make wood burning very costly. A retrofit can cost up to several thousand dollars. If used as primary heat and NG or Propane isn't available it may be economical vs. electric in the long term. That is if your Insurance provider covers loss due to fire if wood burning is the primary source for heat. There are Insurance providers that will and there are some that won't cover loss due to fire. They can get ridiculous. Even though I didn't have a woodstove in our place during inspection they insisted I remove the stack that wasn't being used. Don't ask me why because they didn't have an answer other than it's policy. I should have left it there as the stove was in my shed, "just in case" and I would rather not freeze to death during a freak storm and take my chances on a house fire. It is important to confirm coverage first before making that investment.

Chris you will gain ambient heat standing in front of the open hearth fireplace and it will eventually draught good hot air from the room up and out the stack. There is zero ROI, actually it will eventually cost on unrecoverable fuel that you use to heat the home for primary heat. Like I sarcastically said on a similar thread tonight get the "Fireplace Channel" and watch it for ambiance. If you want to have a nice fire and cuddle on the Bear skin rug, not bare skin, go for it, actually bare skin is good. You most likely won't be covered for a house fire if you fire up that open hearth fire. My wife insisted on having our Gas fireplace that has been here for 16 years inspected and serviced by our local dealer. The kid said he needed to put a tag on the gas valve as the thermopile was a whatever ohm vs. a what ever ohm and wasn't to code. I told him it was the thermopile his Mother sold me last year and he could either leave my place vertically or horizontally. He could report the violation to the Ministry but they have no authority to arbitrarily lock your gas supply, and I educated him. I asked the poor kid what's going to happen to my grand children here when sub zero temps hit and 1 or more die of hypothermia tonight. They can't just lock out the supply valve but will tell you they can. They can write up a violation and file it, if not repaired in so many days then they report that to the Ministry and they must issue a lock out order. Man I have turned into the mean old man! Willow is good for weight in the back of a 2WD pick up. edit: what exactly is wrong with gas fireplace? They want to sell you a new one. This year a small piece of emery cloth on the thermocouples got our 16 year old gas unit working. PM me if you wish.

I just did a fall clean up of all my tackle in my Man closet, Man sheds and my boat. I have a few thousand dollars of tackle I haven't used in 15 years. Unfortunately somehow water got into a few trays in my built in trays on the StarCraft, 8 in total and I threw our a few hundred bucks worth or more, I cried like a baby. Take it from me be careful or you too will become a tackle hoarder. I stopped at a local Swap shop TODAY in Cayuga and bought more reels I don't need and will probably never use. Happy shopping, can I join you?

What do these car guys and gals do when they go from 15" or 16" stock wheels on these Tuners and Customs to 20" plus rims and reduce the tire thickness from a 65 CM to a few inches? Maybe a silly question but I really would like to know how a 5 CM decrease in height is a big deal, or is it?

Optimal length for firewood-non fishing, non political
Old Ironmaker replied to Weeds's topic in General Discussion
If burning wood is for the ambience save you money and your back and turn on the "Fireplace" channel on the TV. I was younger and know where you are coming from, enjoy. That TV wood burning channel doesn't come with that unmistaken smell of a wood fire. We no longer have the wood stove and I miss it. When a neighbour has their wood stove going I go outside in the freezing cold to smell it, my wife doesn't get it. I wonder if it is a deep seeded basic instinct from our Cave Man days, fire means warmth and cooked meat = success. Why is it Women don't get the same thrill Men do of fresh burnt meat? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. -

You will get better gas distribution resulting in better combustion at 16" rather than 18". The void space within the combustion chamber is greater. That's the theory. Would 2" make a huge difference in a small wood stove without doing a scientific study to prove it, I doubt it, in a 70,000 cubic foot Blast Furnace it makes a massive difference. The Brazilian Ironmaking Blast Furnaces burn Rain Forests of charcoal almost that large. 16" pieces would be easier to split but more to stack eventually. I wouldn't over think it. -
A big THANK YOU to all that helped me. NF

Do you see how I set you comedians up like a good straight man? If you can't laugh at yourself you can't laugh. Glad to have been of service you comedians. I actually think that they would find dense Granite. A few years ago while jacking up a trailer with a 5 foot truck jack I didn't click in the last dog and the handle came up and hit me in the jaw. I didn't go down though. Buddy said I have a granite jaw as well as a granite skull. I have been known to be hard headed just ask my Lady. -
We must remind ourselves the sacrifice of those that came before us as well as those that continue to make those sacrifices today. We must remember regularly not just this one day a year.

I have partaken in the Sacrament a few times. 6 or so foot longs fully dressed and off to bed I go after a few puffs. I have a CT Scan booked for the New Year to see what is there for sure. -
This past summer I thought I was going to die because my Sinuses were plugged so badly. I asked for suggestions here and because of all the help and a suggestion for a good Hamilton Ear, Nose and Throat specialist I can now breath. My Blood Glucose levels are better, Blood Pressure has dropped to acceptable levels, my energy has gone up 50% at least. I couldn't cut the lawn and didn't feel like doing anything most days including fishing or golfing. I couldn't sleep because I couldn't breath through my nose and then my mouth was so dry or I felt like I was drowning in my own mucous 2 hours of straight sleep was good. Now I sleep ad everything above improved. A member PM'd me suggesting I get into see Dr. Elizabeth Jeney. It is usually a 6 month wait to see her, for some reason someone cancelled and I saw her about a month ago. She probed with her magic wand and saw infection. She prescribed 500mg of Cephalexin 3X daily. Within 2 weeks I was able to breath better for the 1st time in 10 years. I couldn't believe how much better I feel and how Sinusitis can effect ones general health. It can lead to congestive heart failure. Thank you, thank you for all those that gave suggestions, shared their stories and gave me hope. I owe each and everyone of you. PM me and if I can help you for anything please just ask. After all these 62 years I know many, many people in many, many fields and often facilitate and broker deals. You all know who you are that reached out to me. I have enough energy now to go back and PM you all. I hope I still have them. This just goes to show how much more this forum is than just a place where like minded folks can share fishing experiences. Thank you again, I can breath!!!!!!! Johnny D

If I could only use 1 lure the rest of my life it would be a Mepps Black Fury with yellow dots in #4. I've caught everything from panfish to a Tiger Musky going 39". They will work for anything that swims I swear. If on foreign waters I tie on that lure if I have talked to no locals or those that have fished there. I have caught Jacks to Snook on it in Florida. I brought 1 with me to Japan and caught what looked like a type of Bull Head. If I were to name a second all purpose lure it has to be a floating Rappala black on silver flake belly 10cm. Third is a list too long for this thread. But Readers Digest version go to lures if I could only bring 1 bait for the species: Dark Tubes for Erie Smallies Spinner Baits for Large Mouth Drop Shot and Berkley Powerbait for Perch Worm Harnesses for Erie Walleye Little Cleo for Salmonoids Red/Chrome Daredevils for Pike, 5 of Diamonds 2nd choice Or 1 #4 Black Fury for every fish. That's about what I have fished for the last 8 years and if I could only bring 1 lure for each species that's what I would bring. Why I bring 8 trays and a full Tackle Mate box of plugs, spinners, a few freezer bags of plastic, a few trays of jigs in every colour, style and size and spoons of all types your guess is as good as mine. If Yogi Berra was a fisherman he might say " If you never need it you might got it". I often find myself staring with a dumbfounded look on my face into a deep dark cornucopia of tackle not being able to choose. Ever do that?

Donald ripped the band aid off US politics, and the voters didn't like what they saw and voted anti establishment more than for Trump. With both Congress and Senate having a majority of Republican members he has cart blanch with whatever he wants to do. I wish him and the American public the best.

Moon Eyes on the Grand are a blast Grimsby Dave. We would go to York or south of York and catch them one after another on light tackle when they were running. The contest was the most in an hour bought the jugs of beer at the Cayuga Hotel afterwards. Huzz if you want to catch fish go for Moonees in the spring on the Grand River. I know you aren't picky and they are fun, plentiful and easy. Don't ask me where they run now because that was 30 pounds of body muscle mass ago. I'm sure there is still a run because they are all released. Good practice for any fishing. Those shad the guys caught on the Ottawa hit spinners, no idea the exact strain. To me they all look like suckers. They had red on them. off topic edit. The Cayuga Hotel that has been there for 100 years was recently closed and sold to the county. It will be torn down soon and will be a new Library. The best and cheapest Chinese food in the county. 5 bucks for a huge bowl of home made Won Ton soup loaded with BBQ pork and a huge bowl of fried noodles all hand made my Moma. Coffee and taxes included.
-
Not a generally targeted fish Huzz. I do remember years ago on the Ottawa where we had a camp 2 of the guys came in with a stringer full of a similar shad basically giant minnows. I don't know what they thought they were but I wasn't going to eat one. neither did they. Try a simple worm set up I would suggest.

Early ice fishing season this winter??
Old Ironmaker replied to huzzsaba's topic in General Discussion
It's going to be a while before any ice here on Erie. Buddy went out today and got some hawg size Small mouth here. I was even tempted with 22C weather today. Jumping pressure cracks in the middle of the lake is half the fun. I love when the hut shook. Nothing like throwing a line down and tossing a football on a nice sunny winters day out on the ice, forget shore lunch it always tasted better in the middle of the lake, everything did. I am looking forward to our 35 year reunion on Nipp this winter. I couldn't talk my cousin from Georgia to join us again. He was scared stiff when he went out on Nippising ice 30 years ago and heard his first pressure crack. He refused to go out day 2 so he stayed at the cottage and cooked us a real southern dinner. Huzz get yourself a million dollar life insurance plan making the wife beneficiary, she will buy you some new ice fishing tackle. -

A few years ago I think you asked the same question and I got a Streaming 101 education. I don't have nearly enough band width rurally here with Xplornet. A pal down the lake has one and they can only use it for movies, then they have to wait an hour for it to download. Find out how much bandwidth you have coming into the PC. I have learned from my brothers lady that makes and sells them live sports isn't good. Netflix yes. I've seen all the Beverly Hillbilly and Get Smart reruns in high school, and memorized them. Oh forgot Green Acres! -
Fishing forums that appreciate a fishing report?
Old Ironmaker replied to manitoubass2's topic in General Discussion
I'll take the pass. I would give almost anything to be able to fish as much as I did just 10 years ago. Getting in and out of a boat has become a challenge let alone fishing a majestic stream on a beautiful Fall day like today. 1 day on the water means 3 days of icing body parts, and that's from the nice comfortable big boat. It's sucks. -
Thanks for the fishing report. You nut's or what Dave? Even your first mate questioned the route. I have never seen an Arctic Ice Breaker with a bow mount electric before. Yea you guys up there have to be a bit nuts, a good nuts though. I love it. The leaves on the trees here haven't all changed colours yet.

Akrinsoner. I agree Uncut Angling is a great show. It is however not part of mainstream media as far as I know it's Internet T.V. Bunk would be at the mercy of the suits if he did make it in that network TV world, I don't think he would sacrifice his art or integrity to sell stuff we don't need or want.
-
If Drew had his own show he would be at the mercy of the advertisers and before long he will be selling tires and trucks like all the rest. Great looking site Drew, congratulations and best wishes going forward. EDIT: I just took the time to read the Nunavut Arctic Char article. It took me an hour but I am no speed reader and I back read several times. The article is not a fishing report. It is a life report. I can see no closer way of getting to know citizens from any area of the globe better than to work in the Health Care industry. Up close and personal. A southern construction worker goes to a northern camp and gets to know other southern construction workers, not the experience of a health care professional. We here in southern Canada complain about everything and when you look at how others in this country have to live what exactly do we have to complain about? I have never seen shelves in stores here close to being 10% empty. Two of us in southern Ontario can waste enough food to feed an entire family up in remote northern communities. I don't know what colour those Char really are. Somewhere between mesmerizing and God like. Calling them Red really doesn't do them justice. Keep up the great work Mr. Bunker. By the way 500 hours of work is 3 months of 9 to 5 Monday to Friday. You did it in 4 weeks! Did you ever sleep?
