Trolling Musky Lures, getting caught in weeds
Rizzo replied to Tjames09's topic in General Discussion
safety pin style...practically weedless. Not sure what the weight of them is...5 ounces? Heavy. I like black skirts and orange with yellow skirts. JB's probably has a good selection, that's where I bought my last few I think -
Trolling Musky Lures, getting caught in weeds
Rizzo replied to Tjames09's topic in General Discussion
get a BIG musky spinnerbait....you will not find this just at any tackle shop. It should cost you close to $30 and be a heavy son of a gun. Toss er back 25 feet with the boat going 6 mph. That'll do it. If it doesn't...you aren't going 6 mph. One more tip...you will want rod holders! -
I noticed you said the single bucktails burned you out...thats trouble. We use singles when its time to rest a bit! You just have to get your body in game shape. Nothing wrong with trolling bucktails either when you are gettin a bit tired. I catch lots of muskies trolling them (although casting is certainly a more fun way to catch them). Leaders? I have gone anywhere from 60lb fluoro to 150...probably somewhere in the 100-120 lb range would do it. Pike will figure 8, I have caught one that way. It was a pike who followed and wouldn't leave side of boat even after I pulled lure out of water. I put lure back in and he grabbed it on the first turn (so maybe it was more of an L than a figure 8!). Barbless? no I would just cut the hooks out of a deep hooked fish...I fish enough hours just to get a hit...definitely keeping the barbs. Don't always need huge lures for muskies, try different sizes and see what the fish want on a particular body of water. I have caught many muskies on super shadraps and that is not a big bait at all.

I like that kids logic

Princie will fit in your garage probably too, not sure if that's a consideration

Actually posts that celebrate the number of posts you have made don't technically count...maybe next year you'll get there

if your current motor has given you no grief I am also of the opinion of sticking with it. Why fix what ain't broke! Yes you can spend 9000 and have a warranty...but if your new motor is a lemon your boat will sit in the shop. Sure its covered by warranty but what comfort is that when its sitting high and dry in the marina. Just because something is new doesn't mean it will be trouble free, might have been made on a Friday by guys looking forward to the week-end. Now if your current motor is very unreliable and IS a lemon...then yes, go for it and hope the new one treats you well

that is sweet looking bait glad to see it paid off

I tolerated the bare chest....then scrolled down and saw the short shorts. There's a no no. Nice fish though

That is so awesome. Big Cliff is heading out, you are heading in, the cycle of life continues. Hope you enjoy it your spot looks phenomenal. Very jealous!

I would imagine those rentals are just tin cans. I bet you could buy a reliable tinny with a decent engine for 2k and just leave it at their place. When you find the real boat you want sell the tinny and get your 2k back. Better yet..have them buy the tinny. Everybody needs a runabout!

I suppose a bit more information might help (ie how you plan to use the boat - fishing alone? with 4 other guys? tubing?) but for me, I had a great boat for kawarthas when I lived up in Barrie. Was a 16 foot princecraft, side console, bowmount trolling motor, 50 hp four stroke johnson was less than 10 years old when I sold it for under 10 k to one kickingfrog on this board. I am always happy to see his reports and pictures of "princie". If you look, you will find something. All the best in your search.

very nice! I had the same problem once...found someone to sit on my hood over the tire that was spinning. Another time, when nobody around, I found that if you get the entire vehicle into the water, the ground is much harder packed (at least where I was)...lets you get some forward momentum and then the loose gravel is not as bad. Seems counterproductive (to back up a bit) but worked great.

congrats on your sale! I am sure very few of us will ever have such an opportunity to live like you have the last 16 years. I am sure it was a wonderful experience. May you enjoy your summer before the big move.

she's a beaut for sure....better than my first!

this is a big thing right now, I actually know a few people who believe in a flat earth. There are lots of videos out there on the subject

great report and pics...it wasn't literally the same pike was it?
-
Thought I would give it 12 hours then check weather network again. Somehow things have managed to get worse. It now goes thunderstorm, thunderstorm, then 30 k north winds on the Friday. Kawarthas on the other hand show 23 degrees, 10-15 k winds and partly cloudy each day...guess the mind is made up!

My musky opener plan was to go to St. Clair on the Monday after the opener....due to strong winds we cancelled that and headed to Kawarthas instead. This ended up being a wise move...the wind howled up there too but at least some fish were cooperative and we did not fear for our lives. We caught 4 smallish fish (all between 36-39 inches) and lost a couple more that also seemed to be of comparable stature. Now my yearly spring trip, planned for later this week (Wed-Sat) also appears to be in jeopardy...or at least heading to St. Clair seems to be in jeopardy. Winds again either strong, or from the north (and strong too). We generally make Belle River home base, and hope to be able to sneak out there as I truly miss the mothball smell of Petitie Dragon. Here is hoping things settle down or it might be a kawartha report showing up next week.

Canadian Robert Hall beheaded this am/No Ransom paid

very sad but what can you do? Paying the ransom would only lead to more kidnappings -
you could speed troll

I hope some of those pike made it to your dinner plate! That's a beauty way to start the season Pete. We had a good day out too (4 for 6) but I would trade them all for that one!
