NF What to do if your vehicle goes through ice
Sinker replied to woodenboater's topic in General Discussion
The trick here is to keep your vehicle ON TOP of the ice. I'd say 99.9% of vehicles thru the ice, are vehicles driven into pressure cracks. The other 0.01% are driven onto thin ice, where there is current or similar. I learned how to drive on the ice, long before I was old enough to have a drivers license, and I've been driving on it (when its safe enough) since then. Never had a problem, and don't see any problems coming. Would I suggest driving on the ice? NOPE! Not to anyone. S. -
How about this. If authorities want to make the call on whether the ice is actually safe or not, they have to go out and actually set foot on it, drill some holes, measure it, look for cracks.....you know....monitor the ice. They call the ice unsafe, but in reality, they have no clue what the ice is like, and no experience on the ice. One persons safety level is much different than the next, but there are times when it is just stupid for a person to be on the ice. Take the last simcoe ice rescue for example, and the big ice break up last year as well. S.

Poor readings at greater depths with Lowrance Ice Ducer
Sinker replied to asdve23rveavwa's topic in General Discussion
Also keep in mind the ice ducer has a much narrower cone, so of there was any current, or your spoon fluttered off to the side of your hole, you will lose it Out of the cone. S. -

Noise reduction off It sounds like you were getting interference from another unit. Were there other fisherman nearby? I set my upper/lower limits to see the water I'm fishing as well. Clears the picture up. Then split screen it so you can see the whole water column. S. -
I have fancy ones too, but I'd rather beat up a $200 unit that does the EXACT same thing. Do people really use the flasher mode on their graphs? I. Use a graph, because I prefer a graph lol...... To each their own I guess. S.

I use an old lowrance X-96. The thing works mint thru the ice. I use the skimmer transducer, and it marks any jig you want down to 100ft easily in real time. I really don't see the need for a fancy, colour, gps combo on the ice. Your really just beating up your nicer units for nothing. The cheap lowrance I use marks the exact same fish as the nicer colour units, and mine will run for days on a single battery. Just sayin.... S.

Nope. Just got back from there. Bring some gear and hit the saltwater. Lots of fish to be caught! You can catch all the bass you want here!! S.

Finally went and did it! Completed my PAL and hunter ed!

Right on! Congrats! You may as well forget about fishing from sept till Jan now, and yeah, blow the dust off the wallet! What do you want to hunting first? S. -
^ So does the fin bore 3. Good luck getting blades that are supposed to be lifetime.....that's another story. My Nils was a 6", and my finbore is an 8". I find no difference. I had a hard time changing from a mora/swedebore style auger to the nils/finbore, only because I was used to that design for over 20 years, and could drill holes like a machine. The finbore is the same now though, just cuts like butter. Most guys problems with augers are their own fault. They damage them without even knowing it. They have to be razor sharp, and turned properly in order to work the best. Taking care of them once the holes are drilled is equally important. I don't let many people use mine, but I will drill anyone a hole with it, no problem. S.

Wow...looks like a great trip! I might have to check that place out now lol Thanks for sharing! Great pics! S.

Oh, I have an 8" mora here if anyone wants it. Needs blades, but its yours if you want to come get it. I'm 15mins south of ptbo, just off hwy 115. S.
-
I've had them all. Nils, more, swedebore, and fin-bore. I use the fin bore. The nils was great for 3 seasons, then needed blades, and I couldn't find them anywhere. When I did find them, buying a new fin bore was cheaper. I haven't looked back. S.

The way I grind up props, I couldn't afford to be replacing/repairing stainless, and I'm sure my prop shaft would be warped among other things. Right now I'm trying out the 2 piece units, so I just. Replace the blades, and the hub stays. Also a nice way to change pitch for conditions/load. I don't think I would see much gain on a 40hp with stainless anyways. 30mph is fast enough for me. S.

We had to build an insulated box around ours to stop it from freezing. Basically just a plywood box full of foam insulation from just below ground level to below the water line. I turn the line heater on if its going to be -20 or more. S.

I do all kinds of risky things. Breaking ice in my boat to duck hunt. Going out on lake O in the winter in a small boat, walking loooong distances in really cold weather, even ice fishing on thin ice. There is a fine line between stupid, and risky. I've never had to be rescued, because I'm not an idiot!! These guys were plain stupid. I think they should pay. What if it was your house on fire while these clowns were being rescued and the firetrucks didn't make it in time? Would that change your mind? What if one of your kids was in a serious accident and the EMT's were pulling these idiots from the lake? What if someone had a heart attack, and the ambulances were busy waiting for these guys to get to shore and they die?? I could go on and on. It was plain stupid for these IDIOTS to be on that ice. Period! Plain and simple, these guys made a stupid decision going out there. Experienced or not, it was a dumb thing to do! Mike, your boating situation is a whole different can of worms. You are not taking much of a risk by going out in a boat in cold water/weather. There is a slight chance crap could happen, but very good odds you will be just fine. If something did happen, and you needed to be rescued it would be a fluke. These guys should have known better. When you pull up to lake simcoe, and NOBODY is on the ice, that should be your first clue!! If they were in a boat, they would have been fine!! Chris, your rescue was exactly why we have these services. It was an UNEXPECTED accident. Stuff happens. To knowingly risk your life for something as simple as a fish, when you very well should know better is stupid! I hope they have to pay back every red penny! Taking a license away, or creating more legislation isn't going to do squat!! Ski off the slopes in BC and see how fast your billed for the rescue! S.
-
Come on wayne, I can't believe your making excuses for these idiots! That's right, idiots! I hope they read this, because they are idiots!!! They should be ashamed of themselves for the rest of their lives! Just imagine the horror that poor kid went thru! It blows my mind how stupid people are, and they just keep getting more stupid every generation! They better have to pay every red penny for their rescue. If it was up to me, I would have left them all out there to fend for themselves! Idiots!!! S.
-
Yep, they sure can be insured and plated. There is a guy around here who collects them. Its all he rides. I'll ask him where he gets his insurance from if you can't get it. Just PM me if you need to know! S

OPP Warning people to stay off the ice. as its thin...
Sinker replied to jedimaster's topic in General Discussion
Do you think anyone from cp24 or the local police force has even set foot on the ice to check it? I just got off the lake. Found nothing less than 6", and up to 8" everywhere I went. I was over 3km off shore. Walking of course. That ice isn't going anywhere. If anything, this warm spell will help smooth it out, and make more ice. Ice freezes much faster than it thaws. What we lose in a day, will re-freeze in an hour. S. -
If I could only have one lure for icefishing it would be a half and half williams #50. No question. I've caught every fish that swims on that lure. S.

First mistake was buying a FORD! (sorry, someone had to say it) S.
