I thought fetch was the distance between wave peaks? I forget now too..... Anyways, if you have open water on one side of the lake, and ice on the other, you'd best be watching the winds. An offshore wind can break the ice off, and send you drifting, like what happened last year on simcoe. An onshore wind, into the ice, will make waves smash into the ice, and possibly break it up. I've heard stories of waves on simcoe breaking up 8" of clear ice they got so big. Just think, there is ice on the south shore out so far. A big North wind comes up, and those waves are building up for miles, over a long period of time. By the time they reach the ice on the south shore, they are massive. The ice doesn't stand a chance, and will start breaking up. I've only seen this on simcoe, the great lakes, and the ocean. You need a big body of water for this to happen, and it has to be open with only sections that are iced over. Make sense?

Id check the pounds first, if your not picky on a breed. Some of my best dogs have been mutts from the pound. I have a chocolate lab right now, that I adopted from Harrison here on OFC. Great dog, gets along with anyone, and anything. He's my best bud! He goes everywhere with me, but he is just a pet. My next dog is going to be another lab, but strictly a hunting retriever. You won't be dissappointed with a newfoundland. They are a great breed, gentle giants, and I've never met one I didn't like! They are big though....eat a lot, crap alot, and take up a lot of space. A friend of mine has one though, and he is an awesome dog! I wouldn't think twice about getting one, but I need a hunting retreiver, so a lab its going to be for me! You can't go wrong with a golden either. My dad has had golden retrievers for as long as I can remember, and they are one of the smartest, most willing to please breeds I know. Awesome dogs. Good luck in your search! Everyone should have a dog in the family! I'm lost without one! S.

Well anyone who makes sausage isn't going to use lean pork......that kind of defeats the purpose of adding pork! They could very well be the best sausages ever, but I'm my experience, too much pork is better than too little. Nothing worse than dry sausages! S.

If they're just wet and frozen they will clear up easily with a bit of heat from a propane torch. If corroded, use the penetrating oil. Last thing I do when I put mine away is lube the cables. Had that problem on every type of equipment you can think of! S.

They look great, but I think they might be a little dry. I always do 50/50 pork/game to get nice juicy sausage. Let us know how they turn out! S.

I use penetrating oil on mine. Been working great so far.

Atta boy. I've done that drive a few times myself. It was a nice day for a look see today. S.
-
And there was no internet.......and lots of fish.......and hardly any fisherman.......I miss those days!

Lots of snow here tony, bring it over if you want to giver a whirl
-
How about get in your car and go see for yourself? What ever happened to those days? S.
-
Thanks for the info guys. I'll giver a whirl and see how they turn out. I find some of the lead is much softer than others. Do you have a preference? The stuff I'm using is in sheets that were used to line the walls of an xray room. I'd say its pretty pure lead. Would wheel weights be harder? S.

I happen to have a mold and lead to make a batch. What hooks and paint should I use? I find the meegs do work the best, and. I've tried them all. I find shoal diggers are the toughest, but don't work quite as well as the original Meegs jigs!!

Merry christmas Lew!

The transducers won't last forever. I've found replacing it after a few seasons makes a big improvement. They're not too costly.

Hmmmm.......I've had tip ups like that since I was a boy. Are these the next new thing? Kinda like drop shotting........I was doing that 30 years ago!! Nice trout!! S.

Drove thru Bewdley today. Rice lake was ice as far as I could see. Still some geese waaaaay out in the middle though, so there is still some open water out there. I didn't stop to check thickness, but It certainly didn't look like much. S.

This is what I meant to say! I am NOT for the govt telling me what to do for anything. I live in the snow belt, and like to drive in the winter. A good set of dedicated snows makes a big difference. Its night and day. I have no worries getting in my Subaru and going anywhere in the winter. If anything, its fun. I'm not sure I'd like it so much in the city, but around here I can stick to back roads, and travel at my own pace with no dumb ass ahead or behind me to worry about! I LOVE it when the roads aren't plowed S.
-
No worries Gerrit. I'd be willing to bet everyone knows about the weather that's "supposed" to come though. Its all over the TV, radio, and internet. Unless they're living in a cave somewhere, they had to of heard about "the first winter storm" of the year. My bet is we get nothing worth worrying about. S.

Im all for snow tires in the winter! I drive an all wheel drive vehicle, and still swear by dedicated snows. There is a HUGE difference!! S.
-
If it stays below -20 for over a week..... S.

I'm just sick of the hyped up weather forcasts. They never hype up the nice weather, but if there is even a chance of rain or snow, its the end of the world Now your talking! Bring it on! I have photos of my dad standing on top of the cab of his pick up reaching for the top of the snowbanks. He couldn't reach Now THATS a snow storm!! Remember we used to measure snow in feet.....not cm's. Bring it on I say! The more the better!! Colder that a witches bra and snow by the foot! We'll see who's complaining then!! It won't be me!! S.
-
Too bad for them!! Suck it up buttercups! Maybe if they had to suffer a little, they would toughen up and learn how to cope with a bit of snow. I mean, we all managed to survive somehow all this time........ I will bite my tongue now. This drives me NUTS!! S.

Well, you can catch fish without electronics, but you will catch more with any type of electronic device. I'm all for keeping things simple, and I do keep things simple, but when it comes to icefishing, I just can't do without my graph. I'd rather forget my boots than fish blind. It really does help. With that said, I can't justify paying $500 for a flasher that I will use for a couple months every year, when my graph marks the exact same fish, and I can use it ALL year round. A flasher just doesn't make sense to me. If I had an extra 5 bills hanging around, then sure, but I don't! S.
