DRIFTER_016 Posted September 7, 2015 Author Report Posted September 7, 2015 I have 5 or 6 weeks before freeze up, but I need to be done by the end of Sept. so I can fish hard until the freeze. It's giant pike and laker time.
Sinker Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 You'll get er done. You clearly have the know how and ambition.....the rest is up to mother nature. If you were within driving distance, I would love to help with the build! S
DRIFTER_016 Posted September 13, 2015 Author Report Posted September 13, 2015 Weather was crap this weekend. Friday and Saturday was rain and high winds with gusts to 50 MPH. Today it's overcast, cold and a little rain. Decided to stay @ home this weekend and do some work on my fishin' machine. New front brakes, reconditioned my headlights as they were badly pitted and yellowing due to age. I also installed a new moose/bison avoidance system. My rig now has 37,000 lumens of LED lighting available. Should work well for those butt heads that refuse to refuse to dim their high beams when meeting you on the road. Still have 2 or 3 weeks left to get this cabin thing set for the winter before I have to stop working and start fishing until freeze up in October. Finished wiring up the Retinabomb 3000 death rays today.
Rod Caster Posted September 14, 2015 Report Posted September 14, 2015 You need to move to Hearst or kapuskasing... I found out this weekend that it's the light bar capitol of Canada. Every second truck has one.
DRIFTER_016 Posted September 14, 2015 Author Report Posted September 14, 2015 Well it may be the light bar capital of Ontario but I bet we got more here in Yellowknife.
Old Ironmaker Posted September 14, 2015 Report Posted September 14, 2015 I don't know what they put in the water up there is God's country but I wished I had whatever you take that's gives you all the energy and drive you have. Please send me some. Actually I will come and get it and test the new deck for lounging capabilities, that I can still do well.
Tom McCutcheon Posted September 14, 2015 Report Posted September 14, 2015 I like your sense of humor....
DRIFTER_016 Posted September 20, 2015 Author Report Posted September 20, 2015 Another miserable weather weekend here in YK. Rain and high winds all day Saturday and showers and wind today. Got out for a few hours today to clean up all the water from yesterdays storm and to tarp the roof. Quite the pain in the butt man handling a 30'X40' tarp solo in 40 km gusts!!!
Ralph Field Posted September 20, 2015 Report Posted September 20, 2015 I can't imagine how you accomplished that on your own.
akaShag Posted September 23, 2015 Report Posted September 23, 2015 When the wind would be threatening to take you away on your home-made para-sail you would be wishing you had not lost all that weight!!!!
DRIFTER_016 Posted September 23, 2015 Author Report Posted September 23, 2015 Took the day off work as it was forecast to be a good one. No wind for most of the day and mostly sunny skies. Was a pretty frosty ride up the lake @ 40 MPH this morning. Got the front gable and roof sheathing done. I also got the tarp properly secured. Just have the back gable and roof sheathing left to finish.
akaShag Posted September 23, 2015 Report Posted September 23, 2015 I've said it before and I say it again, absolutely AWESOME!!!!! Doug
BassMan11 Posted September 23, 2015 Report Posted September 23, 2015 I am loving this report Dave. It's going to be a beauty spot. Don
DRIFTER_016 Posted October 2, 2015 Author Report Posted October 2, 2015 Took the day off work today and headed down to the cabin. Got the roof sheathing all finished today!!! Still have the rear gable wall to finish. Hopefully it will get done this weekend.
Old Ironmaker Posted October 2, 2015 Report Posted October 2, 2015 Are you going to explain to me Dave how 1 guy got that tarp onto a roof solo? You had better hurry up or the Mothership is leaving without you!! I've always meant to ask is articangler.ca your site?
DRIFTER_016 Posted October 2, 2015 Author Report Posted October 2, 2015 Are you going to explain to me Dave how 1 guy got that tarp onto a roof solo? You had better hurry up or the Mothership is leaving without you!! I've always meant to ask is articangler.ca your site? Getting the 30X40 tarp in place was a bit of a chore. I attached one corner to my material lift and sent it up. Then I went up on the roof and hauled it up. Started securing it in the NW corner and worked my way down the side and across the front. It wasn't really that hard as the 2 days I secured it properly there was virtually no wind. And yes the site's mine. I really need to update it one of these days.
Old Ironmaker Posted October 2, 2015 Report Posted October 2, 2015 I know you are alone up there Dave so you have to promise to work smart and above all safely. I don't want to be Chicken Little but the week before the Labour Day weekend we lost a young Father and Husband to a simple fall of less than 10 feet from a residential build here in our small town. Something he has done a few thousand times in his 15 years in construction. Just be careful Dave, please.
DRIFTER_016 Posted October 2, 2015 Author Report Posted October 2, 2015 I'm very careful as I wouldn't be found for days if I tumbled off the roof. I'm not big on heights so I tend to make extra sure on my footing.
akaShag Posted October 2, 2015 Report Posted October 2, 2015 Winter must be just about breathing down your neck now, Dave?Doug
DRIFTER_016 Posted October 2, 2015 Author Report Posted October 2, 2015 Winter must be just about breathing down your neck now, Dave? Doug Yep, won't be long. I figure based on years past that the launch @ my lake will be frozen in 3 weeks.
DRIFTER_016 Posted October 4, 2015 Author Report Posted October 4, 2015 Made it out to the cabin today. The weather was less than stellar but at least the winds weren't too bad. Had to bundle up for the ride up the lake in the cold and snow. Got the gable end sheathing done!!! Also got some of the holes in the crawlspace closed up and some tarps up to help keep the snow out. Next weekend it will be time to pull the dock for the winter.
solopaddler Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 Looks great! Love the huge crawl space with the high ceiling.
adam lancia Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 The best kind of crawl space is one you don't need to crawl around in! Nice work man, I'm thoroughly impressed with how much you've done on your own in such a short period of time. Are you going to be working on the interior through the winter?

May do some work but it's pretty dang cold here in the winter. Probably do some during any warm spells if we get any.
adam lancia Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 That's what kerosene-powered salamander construction heaters are for ;-)
