  1. No such thing as 'bad weather', only inappropriate clothes!!!
  2. I wouldn't be betting on the Weather Network!! Today it said "a few clouds" under current conditions. In fact, there was no blue sky visible nor had there been for several ours. If they can't get 'current conditions' right how are we to trust their forecast!!
  3. I await with bated breath( or possibly 'baited breath' as some fishermen say! )
  4. About 4-5 of us were 3 k out from Oro 7(or9?) and had a few holes cut. We'd just had 1 hit among all of us.. 2 guys made a beeline out from the shore towards us. We told them we weren't catching anything but I guess they didn't believe us. The plunked themselves down in 2 of our holes. It was more amusing than annoying. After about 1/2 hr of 'not catching(as we were busy doing) they were on the phone and went elsewhere---presumably to their buddies who were catching. I guess we thought it funny how they assumed that 4-5 of us gathered fairly cloes together must be catching fish!!

  6. My 2 fave bug repellents----Jan and Feb! works like a charm for ice fishing!!
  7. I guess this thread is no competition against hot issues such as global conflicts, but I'd like to get a few more opinions nevertheless.
  8. I assume a few of you used them last winter. What was your experience? Recommended brands/models? I have used my fly reel but with a 1:1 gear ratio it gets a bit tiring in 100 ft of water!!
  9. a CIL lure would do double duty there!!!
  10. and then there are the mathematically challenged!!! http://www.kijiji.ca/v-fishing-camping-outdoor/barrie/hand-ice-augers/1109913806?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
  11. That's how I got into this subject---see this thread: http://ontariofishingcommunity.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=80656 SD---thx for that explanation of 'loop jump'. I guess that what the guys meant when they said they flip manually to reduce 'line twist'.
  12. To flip or not to flip---that is the question. While trying to figure out an issue with my reel I ran across this thread from another website that suggests that it's best to flip the bail manually. I don't quite get it-----2 guys in the thread say they recommend it because it reduces line twist. I don't see why flipping manually would be any different from letting the bail spring do it. One guy suggests to do it also to reduce wear on the spring?!? Really? Why save the spring if you don't intend to use it? Nothing like buying a dog and barking yourself!! Your thoughts? Maybe you see it differently. http://www.wmi.org/bassfish/bassboard/rods_reels/message.html?message_id=316623
  13. Thx, guys, for that advice. I think I will send it to P'boro, or at least contact them by phone. It's probably quite a simple fix---just pop the spring in place if I can find out what the 'proper place' is. In the meantime I did some surfing and found this thread which suggests that the initial problem I was having with the bail may be due to a design shortcoming rather than lack of maintenance. http://www.wmi.org/bassfish/bassboard/rods_reels/message.html?message_id=316623 There is nanother issue raised in that link i.e. manual flipping the bail as a preference. Since this is a more general issue not confined to 'reels in Barrie' I will post another thread.
  14. Thx for that, Brian. It seems odd that the Stradic FI is not listed.
  15. My bail was getting stuck fairly often. It seemed quite random---it worked well 8-9 times out of 10. I removed the bail to see if there was a piece of dirt stuck in there and to lubricate it. When I did the spring popped somehow so I don't know how it should be configured i.e set into place. I Googled it but couldn't find a pic of how it should be seated. I know there's a Shimano service place in Peterboro but I am going to Barrie tomorrow for other reasons and was hoping to find a repair shop there. Does anybody know of a shop, or possibly have a pic of how the spring should be located. It's a 2500 FI. thx
  16. MJL---my pref is hardware too but the roe guys seem to be getting more fish these days. I just see 1 Little Cleo in that box. Do you use them regularly? I tried my favorite classic bass/pike/walleye white Big O and managed to hook 2. But then they did the classic bass move-----jumped out of the water and spat the hook. Ever tried Big Os?
  17. I already bought the ice version but I don't know how suitable it is as leader material for river fishing. I'm assuming that the diff, if any is minor.
  18. as I understand it, most of the bows enter the river in the fall to eat with a minority coming in to spawn.
  19. Interim leaders are not allowed to run for the leadership. If they want to win they'll have to pick someone other than Jason Kenney or other Republican wannabees. Otherwise the Cons will complete their shrinkage back to the Reform/Alliance party, a process that is already well under way. "Reform"---now there's a misleading title if I ever heard one! Remember their stated goal was an open and accountable government---quite the opposite to what happened. To make the party more broadly based they'll need someone such as Peter Mackay who doesn't think 'progressive' is a dirty word.
  20. as someone said before, at times like these the Cons circle their wagons and shoot inward.
  21. Is there any real diff between regular flouro and the stuff labelled as 'ice'? I'm fresh out of my reg 6# and my local store is out as well, but I have some 'ice' from last winter. thx
