  1. According to the old timers and from what I have seen birch needs to be split or peeled as the bark seals in the water and causes it to rot in no time.. vance
  2. Never saw that one coming vance
  3. Just an awesome fight and nice to see it released.. vance
  4. one of the guys from this camp went south when ours closed and according to him the only place he could get into is a camp from hell and says it was the biggest mistake of his life so you really have to be careful. All the rest went to Mattawa (13) and were able to get in to a new section of the park on a- you have to take us all - kind of deal. vance
  5. I am way up the pickeral river in loring and this year I have to move my trailer. The North Bay-Parry Sound Health Dept. has taken over the enforcement of the Small Drinking waters Act and has forced many small places out of business with their strict enforcement of drinking water and septic systems for camp and trailer park owners.A few places have gone down the road of family ownership to get around this but I don't think many are advertising this and they are certainly not advertising for new customers.I am moving to Mattawa - Sid Turcotte Park-and there is a large waiting list there. vance
  6. I did my 3cyl 40hp ONCE to see if I could and it started right up.If your motor is fuel injected you probably couldn't pull start it anyways as there wouldn't be enough juice to boot up the computer in time for it to fire. vance
  7. done this is a worth while cause vance
  8. So sorry to here this Dave I really enjoyed going to your store. vance
  9. What I did was to go to Princess auto and buy a cheap manual liquid siphon pump and take out all but a half inch of the old oil, just so that there could be no air bubbles to go thru the pump and then added the amsoil. I read somewhere that small amounts mixed together do not cause a problem.Up till I changed over to amsoil I had to change the plugs every year, after that I went 5 years before I changed them even though it made absolutely no difference in how it ran,but at $17 a pop for each of my 3 plugs I think i saved a lot of money even though the amsoil was more expensive. vance
  10. Assuming you have a car or truck with you, why not charge it with your vehicle? There are inverters and lighter adaptors available at CT for doing just that. We looked into that and a couple of other charging methods for trolling motor batteries before I retired from GM in Oshawa. We went to the Delco engineering rep and asked him,he didn't know so he asked them in Detroit. The HEAD engineer for charging systems said, and I quote Modern 12v alternators with all the load that they have on them are not designed to charge a depleted battery ONLY to MAINTAIN one and repeat heavy draws required to charge a battery will quickly burn out an alternator even if only done a few times. And BEFORE we get into a GM bash Delco designs and build parts for ALL car manufacturers and this guy was in charge of his department. vance
  11. A friend of mine tried stocking his pond with fish,as fast as he put them in the raccoons ate them vance

  14. Just to put into perspective-back in the twenties my mother used to go swimming in May and said the water was warm(north of Ottawa) -my grandfather, a tug boat captain on the great lakes(1900-1950)said the ice out was later and later every year -Myself and everyone else lived thru the cuban missile crises and a few other defcon 5 events -the volcano eruption in iceland last year did more damage to the environment than man could do in 20 years NOTHING changes as fast or as often as the weather, and as soon as someone thinks they have it figured out nature will change the rules. vance
  15. I have never stayed there but it looks nice from the water.Little long lake has only a few good spots, one of which right across from the camp up and around the point.Another is at the east end of the lake on a shoal in front of the large white trailer. If you have your own boat you can access the Pickerel river by going thru a shallow area (bass) and out by Tornado's,then you have 30k of river to fish. I would recommend that you dine on the water at Old Mirror Lodge, foods good, view is great and it is only 10 min by boat(no road access) from Northern Lights. If you want we can hook up and I will show you ALL the good spots,I am just down the river near Port loring. I am away today and not back till 7 or so tonite,if you want the 50cent tour pick a time and date and post it and I will be there.Being retired is great. vance
  16. I redid mine a few years ago and it is easy, the hardest part was removing the old carpet. 1 remove the bunks, replace the hardware using stainless steel screws,I just replaced what was there without any modifications. 2 went to BPS and bought bunk carpeting of the right length and using long stainless staples put it back on and tapped down all the staples with a hammer to make sure everyone of them was well seated and put bunks back on trailer. vance
  17. The best knife you can get belongs to my buddy,I don't know what it is and don't care because I suck him into cleaning all the fish so my knife is always sharp and clean vance
  18. Many many years ago my friends mini died north of Ottawa and had to leave in nice guys driveway till we could come and get it.So I borrowed my dad's DATSUN pickup and he borrowed a trailer that could carry a small car(it was for a mg midget race car) and we set out from Kingston to go get the mini.I was over the speed limit by a bit when I felt a jerk on the truck, when I looked in the mirror all I could see was the trailer doing cartwheels down the middle of the road and the Transport truck going the other way doing his best to miss it,which he did :worthy:.The trailer was already a little beat up and you couldn't tell that it had gone for a wild tumble. This time when we hooked it up we made SURE everything was correctly done and had no more problems. We got the car and the drive home was really interesting with the trailer and car weighing almost as much as the truck :( When we took the trailer back the guy says I forgot to tell you when you picked it up that the hitch was REALLY difficult to get locked on to the ball and the safety chains are useless vance
  19. Signed up, signed the petition and added it to my face book page. vance
  20. A buddy of mine had one of those,it was okay for calm water on small lakes with one person but with 2 up and the motor it was maxed out for capacity and the passenger had to bail all the time if it got a little rough. vance
  21. I just went thru this and the alarm is for a low oil level or an overheat situation. If the oil tank is full you probably sucked in some weeds. If you don't know what you are doing and don't have the service manual take to some one who does,it may cost a few bucks but is WAY cheaper than a seized motor. vance
  22. I was there 27 years ago with the wife and kid and it nearly broke me then, just goes to show you things haven't changed.Forget the scenic pontoon boat cruise,it doesn't go anywhere. vance
  23. Ouch that hurts,I know I HATE going on to a new body of water even if I have charts-there is ALWAYS something lurking just below the water just waiting for you. vance
  24. I had nine years on mine when out of the blue it said that's it I quit. vance
  25. Slightly more expensive, but I have used a couple of collapse able camping buckets for 10 years without a hitch including a couple of high speed runs when I forgot I had them out :wallbash: vance
