I had a similar issue with my gmc.It turned out to be the (can't remember the name)unit on the throttle body where the wires run into.it is a round unit near the base that controls the mixture.I replaced it and all was fine again. vance

any ways my old Kenmore it started to do the same thing and I found out after taking the drain system apart a smallish drill bit (that I had been looking for) had jammed the pump.After removing that and $10 worth of change from the pump it worked fine. vance

3 cylinder 2 stroke mercs don't have a head,it is a one piece head and block.What you describe sure sounds like you are starting to blow a hole through the top of the piston,the shinny metal bits are from the piston.lucky for you the plug shorted out before the hole was complete.you should be able to shine a small lite thru the spark plug hole and see if it is so,just rotate the engine by hand till the piston is at top dead center on that cylinder. vance
