  1. CBC will find a way to "retire" Don this summer, they definitely don't want to lose their tv rights because of him. I found myself tuning out on Cherry years ago, not sure if it was anything in particular or just his usual bluster. By all accounts from friends who know him, he's a really good guy in person but when he gets in front of the camera... As for MacLean, I have no idea what's up with him, probably just gave up.
  2. Haven't gone myself on the 2/4 but friends do an annual trip and it's almost always the Lower French off Hartley Bay. They did well last year as did the bugs.
  3. Yup, often is the case. Hope not for the sake of the employees, well maybe except for a few who couldn't be bothered, but most in the fishing dept were pretty decent.
  4. BB, I would think insurance would tell you to go eat dirt if you did this and rightly so. Depends on the coverage I guess, comprehensive should be in the works for this guy though....and hefty premiums lol.
  5. Glad to hear everyone is fine more or less. His family must have been riding in the bed or it went in slooooow. Regardless, he needs to have a serious rethink about taking his truck on the ice next year...if his wife lets him.
  6. I guess the problem for us is that the card is meant for a broad range of boaters whereas we're probably going out in tinnies on inland waters and not navigating busy lanes. Regardless, I think, overall, this card was destined to happen and also agree with Roy re: Power Squadron. If one is looking to truly learn about boating, this would be the course. Glad I took my test in person last year and am encouraging SWMBO to get her card this year so she can drive. and yeah, reading the material over and over helped alot
  7. agree with Dunner, Lakair. Electric, ramp, ice, what more do you need
  8. lol. the Leica user/collector/fondler would be cradling a bamboo rod, wearing Filson (hey they do make nice stuff) and lamenting the demise of Skinners (which btw was a great shop when Jimmy was working there...) and most likely never actually wetting the line. ever and this coming from a Leica guy
  9. Oh wow, I never met Tony but by all accounts, he was a great guy and father. Condolences to his family.
  10. Just wanna clarify. I believe it's Co (carbon monoxide)that's deadly, not Co2 (carbon dioxide). Co2 is the main cause (or may not be, depending on your view) of global warming but carbon monoxide is what comes out of tailpipes and coleman heaters such as captbruce warns us about. A colleague died of Co poisoning when he fell asleep (drunk) in his car in a garage or something. Was ruled death by misadventure... either way, I avoid propane heaters like the plague (for tents, huts etc) and would do as fNw does and install a wood burner in my hut if I had one.
  11. this near Bancroft ?
  12. I think an 8 or 9 weight forward would be fine. Have used 6WF for wooly buggers but not the most fun time but then I was never an all star caster
  13. I know it's a bit of work, expense and a pita, but I'd probably laminate it.
  14. I don't know about everyone else but that plate is the best. Wall mounts and such are cool but this was made by his hands and is the real keepsake to remember him by. Hell, if I were you, I'd lay claim to all the art work he made It's good to see you're spending time with him and I bet he has some good stories as well.
  15. Fair enough but I guess we roll differently. The golf course analogy is not exactly apples to apples. The boat and truck I own but the course is private property so they need to get paid regardless. I look at this way as well. If I asked some buds to come up to my cottage because I wanted some company for the weekend, I wouldn't be pissed if they showed up with nothing but the clothes on their backs and a toothbrush. Not going to turn down some nice aged steaks from Cumbrae either but the point for me is, *I* asked them to come up so I don't see why they should be *expected* to pay for stuff is all I'm getting at. and fwiw, re: Mike's *friend*....I woulda cut him off second time around. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
  16. I think this *may* be part of the problem IF you called your friend out for a day on the water. If one of my buddies called me up to go out on the boat for the day, I would NOT expect to be asked for gas money, straight up. I'd offer to pay for something but to call a friend up then ask for funds is not on in my books. If they called you up, for sure you can ask but not if you're doing the cold calling.
  17. and Bill beat me to it. If I had a kid and I was broke and jobless, fishing would probably be the last thing on my mind tbh. That money would be going into an RESP as your son's future is more important than you landing skis or eyes. Not saying you hang up the rods obviously, but maybe cut back on it some or go out in a buddy's boat every now and then. Like Bill said...priorities. Good luck and I hope this resolves itself so no bridges are torched to coals.
  18. I think it depends on whether he said he would make good or not. Regardless, I'd be inclined to give him back his gear and be done with him. You don't need friends like this in your life Mike. Moochers aren't worth the effort so move on and don't look back. I also think you have to be more discriminating on who gets a ride on the water, this *should* prevent this from happening again.
  19. I would still turn off any file sharing and also turn off the wifi when yer done, if you're concerned. But yeah, if he was smart, he'd make it a closed network invisible to people who are cruising and looking for free wifi.
  20. No matter what's on top (sorry but pineapple is just so wrong...j/k) it HAS to be thin crust. If I want something chewy, I'll buy a cheap cut of steak
  21. Yup. most annoying when they're bad and you can't fire it up. just endless click. click. click <insert favorite cuss here> click. click liked it when it worked though
  22. We had the same issue shortly after moving into our home. Tried snaking it ourselves but nada. Eventually called in the pros and their snake popped up through a vent. The blockage was nasty and he had to dig down at least 6'. During one of the coldest winters in recent memory no less. What I remember most is when he finally cracked the pipe...what emanated from the depths very nearly knocked me over. It was foul beyond belief And he was deep in the pit. So my advice would be to pay the piper and get her dug up and fixed properly.
  23. Definitely shaping up to be a nice cabin there btw, is that a can crusher I see attached to the wall beside the door ?
  24. Google doesn't bring much either. I sent the link to a medical reporter I know, for some info. If this does pan out, this will obviously be a major step forward in the fight against cancer and hopefully lead to prophylactic treatment for people who are genetically predisposed.
