  1. Got a pair of 580G in copper on its way. Sight unseen, I hope the fit is good! Will report back when I get them in.
  2. Anyone know if these fellas were from outta town? From what I've read, they got scooped up by Port Hope Police that same day. Apparently, they started fishing at Sylvan Glenn lol. I can't imagine anyone local being that dumb to do that, hence why it might be out of towners.
  3. Fines have quadrupled in 15 years? Dunno if that is much of a deterrent. At least one of them got some jail time.
  4. At least if there's a settlement involved, you're entitled to half of that purse. lol It just so happens to be the equivalent of a new pair of Costas at MSRP I think some members are partially correct when they're saying that some shades are the same. Luxottica is apparently the world's biggest supplier of lens to manufacturers. They include most, if not all, luxury designer sunglasses, like Armani, Dolce Gabana, CK, Nike, etc. And they also include brands such as Rayban, Persol, and Oakley. From what I know, MJ, Costas, and Smith Optics do not use lens from Luxottica. Some use trivex lens and others use another polycarbonate lens called CR 39 monomer plastic. I'm no chemist, so I dunno what that means lol. Anyhow, you can check up Wikipedia for all the brands that Luxottica supplies their lens to.
  5. 4 games in, long season. It's probably been beaten to death, but strong pitching will always beat strong hitting. So many things can happen from now till Oct. I'm still not a fan of Shapiro/Rogers & Co., but it's still nice to watch them play again.
  6. Thanks for the feedback about the 580 lens, fellas. I know it's probably better to ask about it considering the waters here would be different than the States and I'll start getting info regarding frames and fit. But looks like I'll be looking for glass copper lens too. I love my SmithOptics shades (both polycarbonate & glass lens) and they've been the best I've used to date. Customer service was top notch, no questions warranty. Although, I'll always be curious to know how the Costas will compare. Grimsby: A friend picked up a pair and at one point, I was seriously debating plunking down the $$$ for a pair of them. At the time, $100 for a pair of shades kept me away...until finding out how some were more than double for a pair of NUMA optics. It'll also be interesting how my eyes will react with different lens and for all I know, my eyes may not even be able to discern the difference between the two. Everyone's eyes are different. Mike: Enjoy your new shades man! One of the best investments to make, which is so underrated by many.
  7. Any comments regarding 580P and 580G lens? Costas website suggests the green lens for rivers/in shore fishing, but I've also heard that brown/copper is the more ideal tint to go for fishing in rivers. And most of our bass lakes in Ontario seem to be more on the brown side too. And how is the weight difference like? I have a pair of polycarbonate and a pair of glass lens (same manufacturer) and there is a noticeable difference in weight. How do Costas compare?
  8. Couldn't be further from the truth. The pics I posted on the first page shows the difference between quality lens and cheap lens, despite the H20ptix costing $49 and getting them for $26 on sale. You can see the H20ptix lens didn't have full polarization. Near the corners exhibited a rainbow effect. The SmithOptics lens blocked out 100%. I'm sure the competing brands (Oakley's, MJs, and Costas) all do the same thing. You can certainly try it by rotating the shades in front of your monitor to see how much glare gets blocked out. Also, the coating on the lens can differ between the premium lens and the cheap ones. The cheaper ones tend to scratch off and also wear out over time. On Smith's page, they show how their lens technology is different by embedding the polarization film into the lens. Also, the tapered lens removes any distortion. For prescription glass owners, if you have thick glasses, you'll notice that the corner visual quality gets distorted. If some of you are interested in lens tech from Smiths. I'm sure Oakley's, MJs, and Costas are similar. Just scroll down to see the illustrations. http://www.smithoptics.com/us/techsunglass The science behind different lenses. Read it for what it's worth: http://science.howstuffworks.com/innovation/everyday-innovations/sunglass1.htm At the end of the day, we only have one pair of eyes.
  9. I got lucky and found them on eBay. The frames are called "tortoise" lol Cram made an awesome suggestion about lens colour. I've tried dark grey lens for river fishing and at times, they were too dark. I switched to amber lens, and they made a noticeable difference. Definitely match the lens colour to the body of water that you will be fishing.
  10. I did some decent amount of research looking for a pair of shades for fishing purposes and I too went with SmithOptics. I had an older pair of Smiths that was exposed to salt water (I was in Bermuda for a week) and the metal hinges started to corrode and the lens developed weird spots. I sent them in for warranty and I received a new pair of Terrace shades. Customer service might be worthwhile to consider and I've had nothing but good things about them. On their website, they have measurements of the different models so you will have a better idea how well they will fit. Oakley's, Maui Jims, and Costas all have really good lenses. I did three comparisons to test the polarization of different lenses: Two pairs of SmithOptics (plastic and glass lens) and one pair of H20ptix Baja shades. When my wife wears the H20ptix, she feels that there's a big hole effect beneath her feet. I'm guessing the lens don't taper enough (or at all) and it distorts her field of view. I didn't seem to have a problem with them. H20ptix Baja (polarized plastic lens, light grey): Got these ones on sale for $26, reg $49 from Gagnons. As you can see in the 3rd image, there's a bit of a "rainbow" effect, but the edges seem a little consistent. SmithOptics Terrace (polarized plastic lens, dark grey lens): Pretty consistent polarization through and through. On the 2nd and 3rd image, it may look like an uneven spot on the right lens, but it's just the reflection of the light source behind me. SmithOptics Touchstone (polarized glass lens, amber lens): Same as the other pair, both consistent for me.
  11. You can check out the MNR Fish ON-Line website that could give you an idea of what to expect. They will have stocking information and also the species of fish in that body of water. http://www.web2.mnr.gov.on.ca/fish_online/fishing/fishingExplorer_en.html There were two lakes situated beside Waterfalls Lodge and you can go the Fish ON-Line website to enter in this coordinate to find the lake. Choose the latitude/longitude in decimals: 46.234, -82.312 As for the Marten River lodge, you can enter in these coordinates to find out about Beach Lake: 46.736, -79.796 Good luck!
  12. I did a deep sea charter for our group of 5 and we ended up doing a lot of trolling. We trolled for mahi mahi, tuna, and eventually got into a hammerhead. It took two hours to troll for the hammerhead. I'd recommend reef fishing if you can. The best part was getting back to the marina where other charters were selling fresh raw tuna to people passing by. One of the best restaurants I ate at was Yardbirds. Amazing southern comfort food with some nice liquor behind the bar. I ate there twice during my brief stay there. The Latin food was amazing as well. Fun times indeed down in Miami!
  13. Salmon play their role the the environment, perhaps not as significant in the Pacific Coasts, but nonetheless still important. They provide the towns tourist money for people who fish for them and who knows what kid down the road takes an admiration when they see them at a fish ladder. Salmon are certainly not a nuisance fish.
  14. This makes the most sense to me. Perhaps it's to politicize the problem to ask for more money from gov't to increase spending. Imagine if there was a day when no one broke the law. What need would we have for the police? The realistic goal is to reduce crime, but if that happens, there goes the police budget and in turn, less officers who become unemployed. it's a delicate balance. As a angler who does enjoying fishing in Port Hope, I certainly welcome the extra enforcement. Too many greedy anglers who ignore the rules of fishing and they should be caught and punished. For some of them, it's too late to educate them, they just don't care.
  15. That's an awesome thing to host. Perhaps the MNR has a handout booklet that your guests can take home with them? It certainly takes some time to be familiar with the topics you'll be discussing and it's always nice to have a take home item for future reference.
  16. "If" is a big word. His production was no where near Donaldson's and certainly no where near Bautista's, so how can you even predict Tulo to be considered MVP material...possibly? Bautista had the famous bat flip and smacked two HRs in game 6 vs KC. As I recall, it was down to Donaldson to bring home Pompey, but as we all know, he didn't quite bring home Pompey, yet he still won MVP. Bautista has shown leadership in the clubhouse, produces at the plate, and can still steal bases all playing for a hometown discount. Tulo, on paper, is making more money than Bautista, despite producing less numbers. JB has every right to ask for what he is worth and its up to Jays management to decide how serious they are with the Jays and making it into the playoffs for 2016.
  17. Good discussions, shows us how much we care for the team, which can't be said about Jays/Rogers brass. Our batting line-up hasn't changed much since the last time the team played, but when all is said and done, pitching & defense wins games. Bats can be a factor, but is more often times negated by better pitching and defence and it was something we all witnessed vs KC. When Cecil was out, we had to get Cliff Pennington to pitch..that's just embarrassing, considering we're suppose to be a playoff contender, not barely scraping by. Game 2 vs KC, we were up 3-0 with Price being dominate on the mound for 6 innings. Pop fly heads towards Goins and he got distracted and dropped the ball. It was all downhill after that. Even Martin had a throwing error on a simple play to third during the playoffs as well. Price is an amazing pitcher and to counter saying that he can't win playoff games, Hutch won't even be able to help the team make the playoffs. Get to the playoffs first and then worry whether or not a pitcher can win games. There's no doubt that Price made a huge impact and was very instrumental in helping the Jays make the playoffs. He made the Yanks look like a minor league team. Front office didn't even bother making an offer and ends up signing Happ...just blows my mind. Boston/Baltimore/Yanks have all shored up on pitching during the off-season and there's no way those guys are standing still letting the Jays repeat the success of 2015.
  18. That's pretty myopic to say that. He's been with the club since 2008 and has developed into the Jays franchise player. He leads by example, provides leadership to the clubhouse (boycotted Sportsnet when Devon Travis was being taken advantage of), and has numbers to back up the contract that he's asking for. Plus, he's been playing in Toronto for a hometown discount. Bautista is totally in it for the game and it will be clear whether or not management is serious with being contenders or being pretenders. You can't cheap your way into the playoffs, although Tampa has proven otherwise. Although the Jays front office is brushing it off as rumours, but trading for Jay Bruce must have had some sort of traction and the fact that he's a natural right fielder shows what management was planning to do. You can't replace a guy like Bautista with a guy like Bruce...and plus the difference in salary between Saunders and Bruce...makes no sense at all. What really got me was The Sun's Simmons who tried to compare EE with JB and how EE was such a better deal to sign than JB, except, "Bautista may be a better athlete than Encarnacion, a better base runner, an outfield arm of quality, a driven force of a ball player, a public face of a franchise, a daily topic of conversation."...how is that even a comparison??? JB has put in his time, put up the numbers, and deserves what he is owed. Case closed. The Jays already screwed up by not signing Price, but signed for JA Happ, who we traded away for Saunders... Rogers/Jays front office keeps saying they are serious with building a contender, but the evidence is to the contrary. PS: We still need bullpen arms and another quality starter, which is how we last were left off when we lost to KC. All we've done in the offseason was inherit the losers from Cleveland.
  19. Jays/Rogers management (or mismanagement) are poised to ruin the team.
  20. So does that mean there's a certain leeway regarding fishing without a valid license? Server has been down for 36 hrs, at least. Anyone have any insider info?
  21. Anyone else having difficulty accessing the server? I tried to renew my license yesterday online, at Gagnons, and at the Whitby Service Ontario kiosk with all resulting in the same outcome-the server is down. Just over a year ago, the Ontario.ca server was hacked. Im sure there were a few of us who opposed the idea of having the server located in Tennesee. In hindsight, there doesn't seem to be anything that the gov't can do/control on this side of the border. To my knowledge, it's almost been a full 24hrs since the site went down.
  22. I think one of the important things to request is for full disclosure. Many people don't ask for one and go to the courthouse with no facts, except to say, "I don't think I went that fast,". Get full disclosure and find any holes with the officer's notes. And if you really did it, accept it.
  23. I acquired a G-Loomis CBR rod where one of the guides popped out. I brought it up to Peterborough and thought they would just put in another guide, but with their amazing customer service, I got a brand new rod! The blank was perfect, just had the guide pop out...so I do wonder where did that rod go to? It would certainly be a good rod to have if someone in the back kept it aside and just inserted another guide. But man, am I pleased with their service. At the same time, I also brought in an older model Compre with a broken tip, which was totally my fault and I had openly disclosed that. Not a problem, they sent me a new rod on warranty. That also doesn't include the other times when I sent in a 13'GLX float road (my fault) and an older model Crucial bait casting rod (not my fault)...all came back under warranty, bubbled wrapped, and shipped in a solid rod tube. I'm sure there are many rod companies out there that also have amazing warranties and customer service, but none that I know of are located in Ontario and because of that, I'll keep buying from Shimano/Loomis every time. I'm certainly looking forward to the summer 2016 outings already. Let the ice melt please!
  24. Thx for the heads up. I Googled up Domestique and was it a cafe before? If it was, it seems to have closed...but the good news is that the owner is partnering up with another group of people to create Shawn & Edward Brewery or they're calling it Shed Brewery for short. Hopefully, they'll come out with a maple beer too. http://www.canadianbeernews.com/2015/11/16/shawn-ed-brewing-opening-soon-in-dundas-ontario/
  25. I've had the pleasure of enjoying some Quebec beer that was conveniently purchased from Deps or at the local grocery store. It's not THE best, but for the variety pack and price, Boreale was good for me. They had the variety pack that had a red beer, a lager, a white beer, and a honey brown. I think St Ambroise has been selling at LCBOs now and I've had the chance to go to the brewery in St Henri during the maple syrup harvest. So, they had a maple beer on tap, which was awesome to me! I swear...maple syrup in anything is good and when I tried my first maple beer on tap, it was something I wish that was available everyday! So, does Ontario have a maple beer available? I did find it weird that it's so celebrated in Quebec, but is merely an afterthought in Ontario.
