  1. I'm liking the info I'm seeing posted up here so far. It is reaffirming what I've read about the differences between the two. I'm definitely going to be going up the Wolf's Den to try some different ones out, since I've been there a few times before and like the store. I think at this point I will have to be blown away by a compound to not get a recurve, or more specifically an Excaliber. I like the smaller size of the compounds since I may want to use it for stalking occasionally and it would be easier to travel with that while in the bush and is typically a bit lighter. Since this would be my first time buying my own crossbow, I'm going to be trying out a number of different ones over the coming months before settling on a model that fits my hunting style.
  2. I've been doing a bunch of research lately on the types and models of crossbows available in Canada and want to get some opinions from the hunters here. So a few questions; What do you prefer and why, recurve or compound? What models or brands do you prefer and why? I would primarily use it for white-tailed deer, but would also like to be able to hunt moose. Also, cost is not a determining factor at the moment as I'm most interested in getting the information needed to make an informed decision. So let's have at it! What do you think?
  3. Where are the greatly reduced items on sale?
  4. Maui Jim's are considered by most optometrists to have the most effective polarized lens system. I recently bought a pair of Maui Jim Stingray's with the HCL Bronze lens and it's like living in HD. They are great for lots of different light conditions and the polycarbonate lens protect against errant sticks and lures! There is a topic I posted about sunglasses, back in August or July that had tons of info from a bunch of other users here. It might be helpful to check it out. *Edit* Here's the link, in case you were interested. http://ontariofishingcommunity.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=64258&hl=sunglasses&st=0
  5. I'm not sure if this is like asking for a fisherman's honey hole, but what wmu do you typically frequent? Oh and if asking about specific wmu's is a faux pax, please let me know. I'm relatively new to asking about hunting online.
  6. That's the story for most of us, eh! Anytime I head out early to go fishing I always tend to spook a few deer from where they had bedded down. My father can take either a buck or a doe in two wmu's (one in Caledon, the other up in Mono Township) and like yourself has a large amount of land (>1000) that he can hunt on. I'm really pulling for him because he missed out on filling the freezer last year and he (and myself to a lessor degree) has put in tons of effort to make it a successful season this year. Funny thing though, it often isn't about effort, but instead being at the right place at the right time. I can definitely see why you would prefer stalking. I like active hunts myself and the funny thing is that he was out a couple weeks back and was stalking a field edge. He rattled he antlers to hopefully call one out from the forest edge, but instead a big buck popped up 20 ft to his right and took off, out of the long grass. Sometimes, that's just the way it is!
  7. I was just wondering if anyone has been having much success tagging deer in Southern Ontario? My father has had a few close calls on some nice bucks, but they seem to always be just out of crossbow range. I'll be getting my license in the Spring, when cash reserves increase after finally being done my college-undergrad-graduate educational career. So in the meantime, I'm trying to help him improve his chances by either calling one in, or by providing an improved habitat in our forest. What tips/tricks have you found that seem to work, or improve your chances? Cheers
  8. My favourite is when I'm fishing with my spinning rod. I'll be on a river somewhere without anyone around me, tossing a spinner or crankbait. Then someone shows up planning to drift, right above me, trying to grease me out. In that situation I don't mind crossing their line and pulling it in. I'm not typically twit-for-tat, but if you see someone fishing there already and your style of fishing will prevent them from continuing to fish, move on to a different stretch or get there earlier.
  9. what a brute for a Lake Erie trib! Great catch!
  10. Fossil fuels are finite resources. It may take awhile for us to run out, but it will happen eventually. Well, that is if we don't destroy the planet first. We should be paying the true cost of burning these types of fuels and by not including the environmental cost of fossil fuels we are paying far less than we should be. I hate the fact that gas prices are pretty damaging to our pocket books, especially the volatility. Through a societal shift in our thinking/behaviour we would be better able to invest and focus our energy into the harnessing of other cleaner technologies to run our transportation systems. I'm not about to get into a larger debate about climate change and the like as I doubt it would be well received by a few members here. Personally, I think the government needs to start laying many more price fixing charges against the various oil companies/gas stations.
  11. Nice Brown Trout! I wouldn't suggest lifting a 16" Brown out of the water by the line. It puts unnecessary stress on the fish and even worse, they can shake off!
  12. Awesome summary! Thanks for putting that together for us
  13. Nice catch! Gotta say though, the bird photographs are exceptionally crisp. Well done!
  14. I thought I saw some of those Moonshine spoons at Sail in Burlington this past weekend.
  15. Take your pick at this point! And that's coming from a fan of both teams
  16. Good on them for coming to a tentative agreement! Religion has also provided people with weekends off. Both offer benefits and downfalls!
  17. Gotta say, cutties are one of the most interesting fish species I have had the pleasure of catching. If this plan has a high probability of success then I fundamentally don't have much issue with removing an invasive species. Though, I would need more information before definitively deciding on a course of appropriate action. Native Westslope Cutthroat Trout I caught last fall in the East Kootenay River in British Columbia.
  18. I like the youtube comment. The guy totally sounds like Peter Griffin... hahaha
  19. Wow, that was clever. Crap like that isn't needed on a fishing forum.
  20. IMO Terry is Mantracker. The new guy and all future "Mantrackers" will just be replacements for Terry because they didn't want to give him a raise. Or so I've heard. Not to say the new guy is a poor replacement, he is just no Mantracker.
  21. Epic trip, Mike. Thanks for sharing the details of your adventure.
