  1. Just out of curiosity, how do you know that one of the 2 guys pushed into the water were white? I know a couple of their names sound caucasian, but I know a few Asian-Canadian friends with "John Smith" type names. I obviously wasn't there, but I for one rely on what I read and critically analyze in situations such as these. Based on the evidence presented in court it was determined that the actions of the convicted demonstrated a racially motivated attack, but not to the level that would cause hate crime legislation to be applied. I fully agree that no person has the right to attack another person, but I'm not sure how you can determine this situation to be pure propaganda.
  2. Yea, I remember seeing him on there a bit as well. I was a pretty big fan of his in his younger years in the NHL and hope his new show succeeds.
  3. The article you posted is password protected and therefore not able to be viewed. But I have to say, it's pretty pathetic for the author to use the term nazism and jews when trying to illustrate a point about dog welfare. It is obvious to me and I'm sure many others that by quoting this article, it only hinders your argument to protect dog welfare. I figured I would do a little quick digging myself and this is what I came up with (in the first two search results). Here is an article describing June's prison term and being fired as an animal control officer in New York. http://pibillwarner.wordpress.com/2012/04/08/chester-ny-town-board-names-government-watchdog-june-maxam-as-dog-catcher-then-fires-her-maxam-blogs-as-north-country-gazette-june-maxam-served-9-months-in-jail-in-2003/ "POSTSTAR.COM CHESTER — Posted: Wednesday, November 16, 2011. A longtime critic of local government now works for the town. The Chester Town Board recently appointed June Maxam, publisher of the website North Country Gazette, to the post of animal control officer. JuneMaxam has used the website to blast the town and Warren County, and their officials, for years. She regularly tosses allegations of nepotism and back-door deals at local officials and fire officials. But June Maxam’s confrontational past is raising eyebrows in and around Chester Town Hall. Chester Supervisor Fred Monroe hasn’t been immune to Maxam’s poison pen. “I know I’ve taken a pretty hard line approach and I’ve won a couple rounds,” Maxam said. “Fred and I have had our ups and downs, but we respect each other.” She said Monroe asked her to apply for the job. Some local officials said they expect criticism when news of the appointment spreads. Maxam recently lobbed allegations of unethical and illegal conduct at local fire officials and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office. June Maxam is currently appealing the ruling in a lawsuit filed earlier this year seeking to force the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company to release its financial records. June Maxam served nine months in jail in 2003 on a felony conviction for falsely accusing her neighbors, Donald and Eleanor Lambert, of harassment. The conviction was overturned on appeal and dismissed in 2005. (June Maxam is the publisher of the website North Country Gazette). Chester officials said she was chosen based on her record with animals, not her past interactions with local governments. The town makes about $4 per license, and it’s that cash Maxam plans on using to fund her outreach and enforcement efforts. Maxam replaces Bill Mosher in the $6,600-a-year post. MORE FROM THIS SOURCE. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press March 27, 2003 – June Maxam, who has published the North Country Gazette in Chestertown, New York, since 1981, is serving a nine-month sentence in the Warren County Jail after a state appellate court in January rejected her appeal of felony convictions for falsely accusing her neighbors, Donald and Eleanor Lambert, of harassment. “The record reveals that defendant has had a long and tortured relationship with the Lamberts, as well as just about every elected official and police agency in her community,” the court wrote in its decision. “Defendant claims that all of these people have demonstrated animus toward her because she has criticized them in a local newspaper that she intermittently publishes.” In July 2000, Maxam was convicted of two counts of filing false harassment charges and sentenced to nine months in jail, according to court documents. CHESTER – The Town Board has decided to stick behind its appointment of June Maxam to the post of animal control officer, as dissent from local residents and officials continues to swell in what may be the most controversial hiring of a dog catcher in recent memory. Supervisor Fred Monroe said he asked the Town Board late last week if it wanted to hold a special board meeting to reconsider its decision to appoint the controversial website publisher to the job Included in those displeased with the town’s decision to put Maxam on the payroll are Eleanor and Donald Lambert. Maxam accused the Lamberts of harassment in 2003. The charges against the Lamberts were dropped and JUNE Maxam was convicted of filing false accusations, a felony, and served nine months in Warren County Jail. “I’m livid. If I had a dog, I wouldn’t allow her on my property,” Eleanor Lambert said late last week. “They’re rewarding her for all of the troubles and heartache.” MORE FROM THIS SOURCE. UPDATE POSTSTAR.COM Thursday, February 23, 2012 9:25 pm. Chester NY parts ways with June Maxam, notorious animal control officer whom supervisor praised has been fired. CHESTER — June Maxam’s short but controversial tenure as town animal control officer ended Thursday night as the Town Board overrode Supervisor Fred Monroe and sacked her. Maxam’s employment status has been ambiguous for more than a week. She quit last week in an executive session of the Town Board, only to return the following day to pick up the equipment she turned in the night before and began again responding to animal complaints. Many town officials believed that Maxam’s job ended last week when she stormed out of the board room, but Monroe welcomed her back On Thursday, the Town Board overruled the longtime supervisor, firing Maxam in a 4-1 vote. Only Monroe voted against removing her from the $6,600-a-year, part-time job. “The Town Board does not desire to continue to employ June Maxam,” read Councilman Mike Packer from the resolution. MORE FROM THIS SOURCE. Jailed for 9 months and fired as dog catcher, June Maxam appears to be the most hated person in Chester NY, most people dId not want her to even be the dog catcher at $6,600 a year, how low can you go. Chestertown is a hamlet (unincorporated village) in Warren County, New York, United States, in the Adirondack Mountains, in the Town of Chester. Bill Warner Private Investigator Sarasota Fl at www.wbipi.com" Here is an even more interesting synopsis of her recent trials and tribulations. https://encyclopediadramatica.se/June_Maxam I would quote the article, but unfortunately there is some choice words I would rather not have associated with me. It is a very telling read though and provides a bit of a contrast to the article posted above that was written by June Maxam. If you care (I don't) feel free to read it. I am not even going to bother stepping into the debate about dog welfare in this post as it is obvious this topic is not designed for constructive dialogue, but to push ones own point of view.
  4. Sad to see such a heinous crime go relatively unpunished. Two years is nothing compared to what the fellow with brain damage has to deal with now. How can anyone justify such racist attacks or comments. Subtle comments such as white-bucket brigade and the like only help perpetuate the stereotyping within our beloved hobby. Hopefully this can be turned into a positive by increasing awareness and by providing more education to all people. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/1235868--no-change-to-sentence-in-asian-angler-attack-court-rules "The Appeal Court of Ontario has upheld a man’s jail sentence for criminal negligence and assault after a racially motivated attack on anglers that left one of them with permanent brain damage. The Crown had appealed Trevor Middleton’s sentence of two years less a day, saying it didn’t reflect the racial overtones of the crime. But in the decision by Justices Kathryn Feldman, David Doherty and Harry LaForme released Thursday morning, the court denied the Crown’s appeal of that sentence, as well as Middleton’s appeal of his conviction. The Crown had argued that Justice Alfred Stong failed “to give adequate weight to the numerous aggravating factors in this case, including the racially motivated nature of the offence and the severe consequences of the crime.” In December 2009, an Ontario Superior Court jury found Middleton, 23, guilty of two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and four counts of aggravated assault. Middleton’s trial heard that he repeatedly rammed his Ford F-150 pickup truck into a Honda Civic driven by angler Ruohang Liu, 24, early on Sept. 16, 2007. The court heard that the attack followed a “nip-tipping” incident in which Liu and Charles Hogan, 24, were pushed into the water at a popular Sutton-area fishing spot at Mossington Park. As they attempted to flee the attack, Liu’s car hit a tree after being rammed by Middleton’s truck. As a result, one of Liu’s passengers, 28-year-old Shayne Berwick, suffered permanent brain damage that left him unable to care for himself. Berwick’s father, Colin, said in an interview that he was disappointed by the decision but not surprised. He noted that, during appeal arguments, Justice Doherty said that Middleton wasn’t a “hard-core racist” but “a young guy who acted like a yahoo.” “There’s nothing we can do,” Colin Berwick said. “We’ll just concentrate on Shayne now.” The Crown had originally asked for a prison sentence of eight to 10 years. In arguments presented to the appeal court, Crown lawyer Alex Alvaro said Middleton’s sentence of two years less a day did not reflect the racially motivated nature of the attack. The Crown also argued that Stong didn’t give “adequate weight” to the deliberateness and duration of Middleton’s conduct, and said the judge erred by placing too much emphasis on the youth of the accused and his lack of a criminal record. Alvaro had argued that a five-year sentence would be more appropriate. In seeking to have his conviction overturned, Middleton’s lawyers argued that it wasn’t fair to say the attack was racially motivated. In Thursday’s decision, the judges wrote that cross-examination “severely undermined” the argument that Middleton acted as a leader of the group attacking the Asian fishermen or that he was one of the people who pushed the fishermen in. Middleton is a professional motorcycle racer from Georgina Township. Berwick’s stepmother, Terry, has said she had hoped the case would be classified as a hate crime. The court’s decision brought a mixed reaction from Lawyer Avvy Yao-Yao Go, clinic director of the Metro Toronto Chinese & Southeast Asian Legal Clinic. “I was relieved that at least they affirmed the guilty verdict,” Go said in an interview. “I think there are a lot of people in our community who are somewhat disappointed.” Go praised the work of York Region police in quelling attacks on Asian fishermen through community education and undercover police work, which included sending officers to fishing spots, disguised as anglers. “What they did should serve as a model for other law enforcement agencies,” Go said. Middleton served less than two months before he was freed on bail. He went into custody on Wednesday, on the eve of the appeal court’s decision, said his lawyer, Lance Beechener."
  5. I used to get the hottest ones at Wild Wings, but depending on the location the cooks just roll them in dried pepper dust. So they aren't actually flavourful because the dust just sticks to your lips. That being said though, if the franchise makes them properly I'll crush 2 pounds of their hottest, though usually I like to munch on a couple pounds of Farmer's Daughter instead. Mainly because they are by far the best variety sold there.
  6. I just take the QEW to 403 to 401 E to 400 N. Never takes me long unless it is during rush hour.
  7. Yea, it's too bad that happened to you. Accidents of any kind are not fun things to deal with. It could have been avoided though if the entire direction was clear instead of just the curb-side lane. When I was first being taught to drive, I was told by my parents, and driving instructor that you must not turn right on a red unless the way is clear of all vehicles. Even if the curb lane is open, the other drivers have the right of way. Ie. just to be safe in case they change lanes. The trucker should have checked more closely, but I also think you probably should have waited until the way was clear of all vehicles before turning right on a red. 15-20' is really just turning the corner, not much more, so I think it is entirely possible that when the trucker looked it was clear.

  9. To my knowledge the Bhut Jolokia is the world's hottest pepper, but there is disagreement over that fact. Once upon a time the Caribbean Red Habanero was the worlds hottest pepper. The issue is that there is no "true" hottest pepper, unless you want to go to each growers garden and double check their own peppers. Cross breeds, soil chemistry, growing conditions, etc all influence the heat produced by the capsaicin within the peppers. I grew about a dozen caribbean red habanero plants a few years ago and harvested about 500-600 peppers which I dried and use in my cooking nearly everyday. I have been considering growing bhut jolokia, but most of the ones I've found in greenhouses and at my University are not actually bhut jolokia. Many greenhouses and suppliers get duped by wholesalers or actually try and dupe consumers themselves to play off the popularity. It is very difficult to tell the difference between the vast supply of pepper plants available, especially when they are immature, or seeds. The best and most cost effective option would be to source an online supplier who can provide authenticity certificates to ensure what you are growing is legit. People don't grow the ghost pepper to consume daily, but to be able to say they grew and tried the world's hottest pepper variety. Keep in mind that most suppliers of this pepper plant realize that the potency is GREATLY affected by growing conditions, soil chemistry, etc and will provide you with the needed instructions (likely written) to ensure you're satisfied. If you didn't receive instruction like this, then the likelihood of the pepper plant being a bhut jolokia is suspect. Either way, when you give these babies a shot make sure you have this playing
  10. Not surprised they got mauled. Free food left out for the taking.
  11. Looks amazing! My dad planted about 1000 garlic bulbs (multiple varieties I've acquired for him) near where he plans on crossbow hunting this fall. I'm a garlic-aholic and can't wait until he starts to pull them!
  12. It is my understanding that Sail is Lebaron's version of a big box store. Same company, just different chain name. I have found the pricing on spoons, rapalas, spinners are nearly half the price of CT and smaller independent stores. Additionally, they have some great sales on other gear. I managed to pick up a Garmin Oregon 450 for about 80 bucks off or so, which was great because I was already planning on buying one! I love coincidences. I'm happy with the one in Burlington, though, I can't wait until they get an account setup with Panther Martin so I can go crazy on spinners again!!
  13. So I just realized that when I said there were only 2 styles dedicated to fishing, I must have selected Team Ohana first. There are actually a lot of different ones. I'm leaning towards the Stingray or Island Time models. Now I'm going to find a place that carries both styles and try them on.
  14. IMO, there is absolutely no need to be purchasing a rod for more than an Avid would run you. Unless of course you are going the custom rod route, or you are a professionally angler who is sponsored and does not need to buy equipment.
  15. Hands down the best rod I've ever used. For the price, the value can not be understated.
  16. Oh, and Burns Fishing in Burlington had some great prices on St. Croix rods. I suggest you check him out!
  17. The Sahara 1000FD is my go to ultralight reel (with 6lb mono), paired with a 5'6" ultralight st croix premier. I also pair it with a 6'0" st croix med-light premier. I landed a 25" steelhead from the Credit River this spring with this setup, and numerous 16-20" browns. My Symetre 2500FD is paired with a 6'6" Fenwick (my old beater rod) used for portage canoe trips. For everyday fishing the Symetre is paired with my 7'0" med St croix avid with 10lb or 8lb mono. I hate using braid because as soon as it gets less than 1/2 a season on it the casting distance shrinks by close to half. Though, I'm not ripping it threw weeds and over branches. Check out Sail because they have most if not all of their Shimano reels on 25% off or thereabouts. No need to buy anything more expensive than an Avid if going with St. Croix. The differences are not worth the extra $$ in my opinion. I do find a big difference between the Premier and Avid though.
  18. What model of Maui Jim's do you guys wear? I see only two styles "dedicated" to fishing, but obviously others would work as well. I'm looking for your input!
  19. I'm planning on hitting a pier tomorrow afternoon for a few hours. Hoping to pull in another chinny or steelhead. I'll update with a fishing report if all goes well.
  20. I thought the problem was too many bears?
  21. Have you found a particular brand that adheres to the lures best?
  22. I would disagree with the salesman that a telescopic rod is better than a two piece. First of all, if that were the case, why aren't there more telescopic rods than two-piece? But his argument that there is no single point of stiffness to dampen the sensitivity is flawed in my opinion. I would say there are points of stiffness at the beginning and end of each segment, that is why a single piece rod is better than a two piece, which is better than a four piece, which is better than a 5 piece, which is better than a telescopic. Now don't get me wrong, blank quality and craftsmanship plays a huge role here.
  23. I had heard a few years ago that the rock islands near the Skyway (with the seagulls and cormorants) were going to be "redesigned". Basically the islands were going to be lengthened and narrowed so that they would be below the water surface and the birds would not have a place to roost or land. I think the intention was going to be the creation of more smallmouth bass habitat in that particular area. I haven't seen any movement on that front and my discussions with some ppl knowledgeable to the discussions don't have any update really. I just don't understand why such an obvious problem isn't being addressed to some degree....
