  1. If you contact Adventure Guide in Waterloo they can tell you when their next demo day is on Laurel creek. This is the best way to try out as many different yaks in one day at one place. Remember if you decide on a sit-on-top model to budget extra money for waterproof clothing that you'll need for all but two months of the year. They sell off their rental and demo fleet at the end of the year with some good savings to be had. Also keep an eye on Kijiji for used yaks. Your weight and ability to lift the yak onto your roof will determine how long a yak you'll need. Unless you are over 225lbs a 12 footer should be all you need for the kind of fishing you intend to do. Check out Yakfisher.net for ideas on what might be right for you. It's an Ontario and Quebec forum for kayak fishing with many members in our area. Feel free to PM me with any other questions you have.
  2. Nice looking Malibus you've got there. I think that those Mini-X yaks would be fun in a river. With sit-on-tops you're almost always going to get a little wet. With nice weather that can be a good thing, in the spring maybe not so much. Muskies and carp have been the most fun fish for me since I started kayak fishing, you can't beat the sleigh ride.
  3. Great report Clive. I didn't know there were musky in New Brunswick. Learn something new everyday.
  4. Buy after market cross bars that are long enough to fit your boat. I highly doubt that an X-trail roof rack is rated for a 12ft aluminum. Check out Sportspal canoes. With a transom model it's just like a little fishing boat. Or just get a trailer.
  5. Congrats on the ACE. I golfed today for the first time in over 10 years. Kept looking at the water hazards and wishing I brought my rod along. The wife is really into golf and has been bugging me to go with her. She spanked me good on a local 9hole course along the Grand river. I did manage to birdie the last hole of the day and quickly announced my retirement from the sport. Gotta go out on top. I still like cracking off balls at the driving range but I never care where they land.
  6. Looking at wind predictions for tomorrow in the Kawarthas I've found that the weatherman is just guessing. All these predictions are for the afternoon tomorrow. Apsley-SW 10km/h Bobcaygeon-S 5km/h Buckhorn-S 5km/h Lindsay- N 5km/h Omemee- NE 5km/h Port Perry- W 5km/h Peterborough-SE 5km/h These towns are all within an hour of each other, yet the wind will be blowing 5 different directions. I want a job where you can screw up daily and still get paid. Wait a minute, I already worked in the auto industry, so never mind.
  7. Vegas has been one of the hardest hit cities in the U.S. during this recession. Hockey doesn't work in the desert, see the Coyotes.
  8. Fishermccann, that's what I want to hear, thank you. Let us know if you ever do come across one.
  9. I like the Fireline for spinning rods. I use 8lb on my ultra-light and 15lb for my medium set up. I use Power Pro for baitcasters. I have 65lb on two musky rods and 40lb on my heavy bass set up. They both wear with time but still stand up longer than mono. I've become spoiled with these no stretch superlines and couldn't see myself going back to mono.
  10. Welcome to the board. Why you would want to fish for bass, in a lake with musky, is beyond me . To each his own I guess. As pigeontroller said, look for the thousands of acres of lilypads, and you'll find your bass.
  11. I would release any Tigers you catch in the Kawarthas. Letting another fisherman enjoy the unique opportunity of catching a "Natural Tiger" would be reward enough for me. In the U.S. they stock lab created Tigers in resevoirs where panfish like bluegills have taken over. It gives the local sportfishing population an aggressive, fast growing predator to angle after. Once the lifecycle of the most recently stocked Tigers nears it's end, they can introduce largemouth and spotted bass to the lake. Gives the bass a fighting chance against large numbers of Bluegill. Since Balsam is the highest lake in the chain, water flows out in both directions. Has anyone caught any pike in Cameron lake or Sturgeon yet?
  12. Tim's speech about always wanting to find his name on a roster and never dreaming of seeing it on the Vezina trophy, was the highlight for me. I have always been a fan of Russian hockey players but acceptance speeches in Russian (with sub-titles) would have been better than watching them stumble through prepared English ones. As a fan of the Bruins, I know that Julien, Chara, and Thomas would all trade in their awards for the cup. That makes next season, one to look forward to, for me as a fan.
  13. Slow drag the worm. At a seminar a pro suggested that you try to sneak the worm past fish as if you didn't want them to notice it. Of course that works better in clear water than stained or muddied water. You might want a flouro or mono leader in clear water as well.
  14. Since driving around with a kayak on the roof I've noticed other kayak carriers wave.
  15. Great day of musky fishing guys. Good to see the Bog is alive with the toothy critters.
  16. Great family report and priceless pics. I've had pet rats since the mid eighties, they make great pets.
  17. We used to hold our musky hunt weekend at Elephant from 1991 to 2000. Always caught musky, never caught pike. After switching to Pigeon in 2001 we went back to Elephant in 2002. In 2002 we caught nothing but pike and twice as many as we ever caught musky. Bass fishery is still very good though.
  18. There are plenty of countries out there with mandatory military service, why don't you move to one of them?
  19. You'll be lucky to see a musky these days in Elephant. You are actually more likely to see a Tiger musky (pike/musky cross) than a regular musky. I used to fish the lake before the pike took over, even then we never came across any walleye. Spinnerbaits or inline bucktails will work for pike and try sluggos, senkos or texas rigged worms for bass.
  20. Very poetic report .Great pics too. I'm just sad to see pike caught in the Kawarthas. I have heard stories of them being west of Balsam lake. Is that where you were fishing?
  21. She's Bob's brother Wayne's little girl. I've found that Matzuo products are very cheaply made with easily chipped surface paint and crappy hooks. That being said, I have caught pike and bass on some of their lures. I'd stay away from the jigs though.
  22. Check out our Ontario kayak fishing forums at Yakfisher.net. Many experienced kayak fishermen, probably some in your area, that like to get together and fish or can help with rigging your kayak for fishing.
  23. Well done Victor, and that is the biggest mirror carp I've seen from Ontario.
  24. Nice one T&L. Good to see you getting the boat out for something other than Lake O salmon.
  25. I'm by no means a carp expert but you should do a google search for how to tie a hair rig for carp fishing with corn. Single hooks all the way, if you use a treble you will probably snag the bottom more. Congrats on the decent crappie, there are some bigguns in there. My largest from Scugog is 13" but I'm sure there are some in the 15-16" range.
