  1. Thats a good price! Enjoy.
  2. A helix series would probably do it. They have pretty bright displays, and so far I've been happy with the sonar on mine. I use mine for ice fishing, but if it where for my boat I'd go with the 7 inch. Get the sonar/GPS for sure. You'll never regret the GPS.
  3. As I understand it, they voted to ban night fishing in Port Hope on City parklands in the downtown so far which is fine. It's banned by MNR regulation on the saugeen, so why the MNR would leave this to council who knows. If they where smart they would ban night fishing for salmon entirely. Other than pier fishing, I've only ever seen headlampers and netters at night anyway.
  4. Sounds like a great day!
  5. All good points. I'm not aware of what your referring to, but I assume it's all correct. It's not something I would support, and it does seem that they are talking out of both sides. Nonetheless I still have to support them on this one. I fished port hope since I was 15 or 16 and I'd hate to see public access fishing end up as fee based fishing like in Europe. If it goes like that, eventually anyone of a certain income will only fish for carp if they live in southern Ontario.
  6. Sure, if you looked at only one segment of society, then you would be right. My day to day brings me I touch with people from the well to do members of society, to the gutter rat meth heads. Somewhere in the middle, there are a ton of people who can not afford what you propose, and it would completely exclude them from a public resource. And it's not always because of their actions, or what they do with their income or choose to spend it on. And then there are people of limited means who choose to spend money on booze and smokes and fish as well. They have the same right to public water as you or I do. I'm not giving you a hard time about your choice of tackle. I just insured mine for loss and nearly gagged at the total. My point is that on here you see a cross section, but most of the big talkers are big spenders or guys who guide or tackle junkies who can't resist deals (me). There are lots of guys who shoe string it with a pail of minnows and a small box of lures. They shouldn't be priced out of the market. It's easy to say the world is like this, when you only look at the people you know. Most likely they come from similar backgrounds and have similar opportunity. Not always, but most often. If I looked out my front door, I'd see a string of households that could afford a $500 fishing license. If I went across town to some of the guys sitting down by the bridge on the river on Saturday mornings with a pole and a box of worms, not so much!
  7. So that works, I can afford your proposed fee, I make decent money. I can pay to play. I know that when I was 18, and a river rat spending all my free time fishing anywhere from NY state to Huron, Georgian bay, hell wherever there where fish, a $500 license would have been the end of it. I used to sleep in my car on extended trips and eat from the dollar menu at fast food joints, or live on granola bars and nasty old sandwiches from home. Spare cash was for gas and terminal tackle and upgrades to equipment came from saving up what I could or my parents at Christmas. Most of my planned savings was for school or to keep my beater on the road and pay for exorbitant insurance costs. My parents didn't just hand me stuff unless it was at a Christmas or a birthday. And how about those guys who work in a factory for 35k or 40k a year and still have family's and all the expenses that come with it. Does $500 a year in licensing still sound reasonable to you? Not everyone on the water is fishing out of a ranger and tossing lures with the newest loomis offering.
  8. The OFAH is doing exactly what their membership want them to do, as they should! Attempting to prevent loss of public access or pay to play fishing. They frequently intervene in attempts by council to restrict access to angling and hunting by enacting restrictive bylaws. This is what the membership supports them for. Some of those members may be poacher loogans. The OFAH executive have no way of knowing who is who when complaints about the direction port hope council is going roll in. Now I pretty much think that just about everything to do with salmon fishing in rivers is a complete joke at this point, but I support people's right to do it, and if the OFAH wants to spend some of my membership funds to combat a restrictive (for some) access pass then I'm okay with it! As for angling dollars to the town, I'm probably like most, I'll buy coffee and lunch when visiting, and most likely gas the truck. That's probably about it. I recall from years past that the hotels and motels around port hope filled to the brim for trout opener, so for a weekend things probably have a bit of a financial impact on the town, but nowhere near what people expect over the course of the year.
  9. I rigged the boat yesterday, ready to go!
  10. You'd be better to talk to someone who has done it, or search threads on here. I keep my eye on that site in case something comes up that really turns my crank. Some of the prices are unrealistic with exchange, but a few of them come up pretty reasonably even with the exchange rate. I understand it's a pretty painless process to bring a boat across.
  11. Good, no need to be creeping around in the dark after those old boots anyway!
  12. I cruise with 3 adults and 3 kids in a 16 Lund with a 50. I'm not winning any races, but it works. My boat is primarily for fishing, and I fish anywhere from the Great Lakes to local reservoirs. I can't fish in any weather on the big lakes, but in my experience when it's too rough for my boat I don't enjoy the fishing as much these days. When I was younger the weather wouldn't stop me. As other guys said, your not comfortably fishing 4 from a 17 footer. I can troll and jig with 3. If we are casting, 2 is max. There is a Facebook site called walleye boats for sale. They have a ton of US listings, most around Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio. There are a few good deals even with conversion, but right now is the wrong time to buy. You should be able to get a decent aluminum for your budget. Stay away from tracker, and if your really into multi species a bass boat is probably not for you.
  13. I have had poor service and unexpected price hikes from both Rogers and Bell. Currently with bell until today. I have a Wightmans Telecom crew installing fibre in my place today. We will see what they are all about, at least when I call customer service with them I'm just calling up the road to Clifford, ON and all the customer service reps are local, and I can understand them perfectly well. I have found that loyalty hasn't benefited me at all with these service providers. I was with Rogers for 20 years and paid my bill on time all the time. They still treated me like a new customer and they lost all my business over failing to match virgin mobile at the time to the tune of $5.
  14. Always a good chance of pike in Nippising. I'd hang a big dead bait for sure! I'm not much of a ling fisherman, but I know guys get them into the night. I've only ever caught a couple between nip and Simcoe and they where incidental catches. Can't hurt??
  15. Nice Waldo!
  16. None of the lake ontario ports are super busy during the week. That goes for the ramps on most lakes in general. I've had a lot of ups and downs with shift work, but never having to fish weekends isn't one of them! To bad about the prize structure, but the ticket price will hurt more considering they dropped the car a week. I guess the price of everything has gone up!
  17. If your on Facebook, there is a guy on 705 anglers goes by Kahshe Lake lure company. He sells custom painted hardbaits, and I'm willing to bet he would do repaints. He puts out some very nice work. Just a thought.
  18. There are two Hales outfits in Beaverton. Both have good reputations. I've never used Tim Hales, but I've never heard a bad thing about him. I have used Floyd Hales many times in the past (been quite a few years). And they where always top notch. The incident I described was with a Floyd Hales bomber. And as I mentioned, I assumed it was a one off with an employee with a bad attitude. Given Dans experience with the same outfit, maybe it wasn't. I still couldn't dump all over them without more info, but no doubt Dans incident is as described.
  19. Floyd Hales? Bizarre, they used to be an excellent outfit. I actually had a Hales bomber run a couple of feet off of our portable shack on his way out and again on the way in 2 years ago. We where way off of his trail, and hundreds of yards from Hales huts fishing a waypoint from the open water season. He actually had to go well out of his way to take a run at us. It shocked me and I assumed it was a one off from a dummy employee. Maybe not.
  20. To be sure you'll catch fish on Callender, no question. All I'm suggesting is that there are probably better spots if he's looking for consistent action with a group of not so avid fisherfolk! And it looks like you've given him some good places to start!
  21. Don't book on Callender bay. We only fish there if ithe lake is wicked on the main basin. Still catch fish, but not the pounding you can dish out on the big lake. I can't suggest an operator unfortunately as I haven't ice fished it since my wife was in teachers college. We do freelance on the lake in the summer and it's a multi species smackdown pretty much all the time! I'm actually going up twice this summer, my kids love it! I would ook around for reviews on an operator a round South Bay or someone operating out on the main lake! As for distance, well it's a haul but I've driven 3 hours and slept in my truck to fish the Detroit on more than one occasion so it all depend on your motivation, and theirs!
  22. I've caught pickerel, pike and bass it was decent for all species. Also got one musky In Crowe, but I don't really fish for them so for all I know the musky fishing is good. Haven't fished it in years, I did ding a prop pretty good in there once ion an unmarked submerged Boulder. Watch for obstructions!
  23. Sorry for your loss. She was a great photographer and seemed to be a really pleasant person!
  24. What no inquest? . Some people get freaked out over stuff like this but to me it just demonstrates that Hales is a good outfit and spends a few bucks to keep their clientelle safe!
  25. I'd go for the tilt and trim as well if it's still possible!
