  1. I went to school in Peterborough from 2003-07, every single year I reported walleye poaching, multiple times per year based on the premise if you report it enough times they'll do something....no CO ever came out, just "thank you for your concern" they were not native either, that's an interesting excuse they gave you lol I get they are severely underfunded and short staffed, but still, 10 mins from their big office and they can't check up on it? oddly enough, aside from the busy ice fishing spots, the only CO's I encountered in ON were on smaller rivers and back lakes, never in well known/easy access spots
  2. I'm usually pretty quick to call out tree hugger Bull, and I'm definitely pro natural resource industry in Canada (when done in a sustainable and responsible manner)....but industry on the water gets away with far more tolerance, mostly I'd guess because the bulk of the public just doesn't see it and isn't aware....protest a grizzly hunt because they look cute, protest wolf hunts cause they're cute, anti logging because granolas don't like to see clear cuts, anti mining, anti pipeline, etc.....but raping the resources under the water, nobody sees that, nobody cares....this is one article I'd tend to agree with, a lot of aquaculture operations are seriously harmful and they have no liability for reclamation/rehabilitation
  3. I wouldn't take offence to that article, wasn't really directed at recreational harvest...I'd certainly agree there is a lot of questionable commercial practices in a lot of countries...selling our west coast to foreign corporations for fish farming is a prime example going on today I do love halibut and sushi though, it's a tough call if you're the "eco responsible" type of guy
  4. I'd love to see that video! local ranchers have problems with elk and moose pushing horses and cattle off their winter hay bales...if it was a tough winter, they get pretty violent with domestic livestock and destroying fences to get to feed
  5. I was working at walmart when they first received power pro, I setup the hooks for it and thought it looked cool, never seen it before and bought some that day, almost a game changer I'd say....I was immediately a big fan and while I don't mind trying new stuff, power pro is always my go to braid the other 2 regulars I buy are nanofil and fireline crystal, usually for lighter spinning applications
  6. well maybe not harper, but his wife is telling him that lol
  7. I understand and agree with all of that, we're not talking military equipment, weapons and ammunition, access to resources, etc... we're talking replica rifles used for drills and ceremonial purposes...I don't personally consider a 10 yr old kid with a gun a bad image, whether it be learning at a rifle range or dressed in a cadet uniform if the reservists on guard aren't armed, then there should be a permanent police presence guarding them....I think it's naïve to expect Canada to be immune for further threats, it's inevitable, especially when we back the US overseas
  8. don't think they advise clr for contact with wood, but you could rinse it out thoroughly and dry it how bad is the rust? I would start with some oil and scrub it out
  9. Yes, different cadet program I was referring to this article, following a public complaint...I don't think kids carrying guns in a ceremonial purposes is a "bad image"....I wonder how many of these kids play violent video games or watch violent movies? "The rifle issue came to the attention of Navy League officials two years ago after an instructor in Oshawa, Ont., travelled on public transit carrying a bag of drill rifles. A member of the public saw a barrel sticking out of the bag and called police." http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/not-a-para-military-organization-navy-cadets-to-stop-using-replica-rifles-over-bad-image-of-kids-carrying-guns
  10. not arguing Lew, I agree with you they should be armed, but don't see it ever happening sadly
  11. I don't think it's very far off...it's perceived image...public doesn't like the look of kids with guns, those same people don't want guns in public anti gun and anti hunters cause more uproar than the pro crowd
  12. well considering navy cadets will no longer do rifle drills, I wouldn't expect to have actually armed guards on duty
  13. look for the HMH stuff http://www.deneki.com/2015/01/hmh-poly-tubes/ these guys have rigid tubing also http://www.canadiantubeflies.com/flytying-plastic-tubes.html are these balsa floats? I haven't made any in years, but had fun doing it, almost turned out too nice looking to use
  14. I can appreciate your opinion and certainly believe myself to be a critical thinker....however, my personal opinion is that if this occurred off a reserve and didn't involve race vs race, it is probable the charges would not have been dropped....
  15. go to a fly shop with a good selection of tying supplies, and ask for intruder tubing...I have it in 6" lengths, you can get different weights/stiffness of the tube assuming panfish floats this time of year? if you're doing bigger slip floats, I'd imagine a hobby shop should have some longer lengths
  16. lots of good info already mentioned here...and if you really want it, anything is possible, but like MrSimon mentions, I'd say a lot depends on the number of rooms/cabins you're thinking of? many mom and pop operations do not have a proper business entity setup for liability protection, which is a huge thing to consider...you'd certainly want to work out a legitimate client use waiver with a lawyer....one accident and everything you've worked for is at risk it's fairly easy to self manage advertising with the internet these days, but depending on the scale of the property working with a tour operator to sell to foreign guests has it's advantages most properties I've seen need about a 60-70% occupancy rate to stay profitable I was the accountant/groundkeeper/carpenter/about 18 other things at a remote wilderness/ski lodge, 30 room lodge plus chalets, feel free to PM if you had any specifics for semi retirement, MrSimon's idea sounds more enjoyable than a full scale resort
  17. a buck "not acting normal" during the rut, well that is a rock solid case, it MUST have been the phantom buck that was injured by the shooters bullet...
  18. just awful, I'll keep my less than politically correct comments to myself.....it's one thing to lose a loved one to an incident like this, but to also not have justice served, can't imagine that type of pain
  19. sounds like you're fly focused? booking a half day for sturgeon is definitely worth it, the fight is pretty awesome I'd pack your flies in your suitcase...I travelled with ice rods and reels in overhead storage, they said no problem but specified no hooks, AC from van to Edmonton could try the skagit river near hope, it's about an hour detour off your route, Canada day is usually unfishable and early august is sometimes a gamble, but with a poor winter it should be good timing for your trip
  20. Columbia and simms make long sleeve shirts, neutral logos, no skulls or anything I have a few, I like the Columbia stuff better, cheaper and nicer fit for me these guys here: http://www.columbia.com/mens-pfg-terminal-tackle-long-sleeve-tee-FM6094.html?dwvar_FM6094_variationColor=374#start=10
  21. had a fly fishing guide tell me they have 60" pike in the reservoirs in Colorado... I like his shows, refreshing format compared to most fishing shows and exotic destinations I fully expect "local folk lore claims musky occasionally attack small children, truly frightening fish"
  22. for average joe, yes.....but some hunters are completely competent and ethical at that range youtube beats wildtv and the fishing channel hands down...here is another very well done video, just watched this morning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs-mcWMew7g

  24. he's one of the few hunting shows on TV I actually like...smart guy too, he did an interview with an anti and did well, respectful guy and made a good argument the grizzly episode was awesome, smell us now lady!
  25. great pictures, looks like a good fishing partner! dogs truly are an outdoorsman best friend, will never say no to a dayin the bush/water and never complains Tucker and his first bird, let him have fun with it 2 weeks after his first grouse, guarding his kill lol and in the boat, he's pretty good at sight fishing for big lazy pike in the spring...occasionally tries to retrieve fish I throw back
