  1. hmmm, so Beans...you are basically suggesting I grow a bad ass mustache, gain a few lbs and dye my hair grey....then go back and demand to buy that fishing reel?
  2. I beleive there have been surveys done in the kawartha's as to economic impact from tourism, with tourism including angling days...but I'm not aware of any specific studies targeting tourneys specifically....I did a stint in college for hotel & resort management, studied a lot on the topic but obviously not angling/tourney specific data....I'd be interested to see those specific numbers too any tourney guys want to pitch in?.....how much does a tourney cost you? gas, food, lodging, etc every day?
  3. I hear there is a blizzard moving through ON tonight....winternet in july! it doesn't matter where you fish, how you fish, what type of boat you have....there is summer kill every year with high water temps, just like winter kill how many more bass have actually washed up since that article was written? this whole thing sounds like a cottage owner that thinks he owns the water and doesn't want tournaments...making a mountain out of an ant hill IMO tournaments anglers have the utmost concern for conservation and boost the local economy....ask the local marinas, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, etc if they have a problem with tourneys?
  4. right on, minks are interesting critters, highly curious...often saw them carp fishing in the otonabee in ptbo, they would actually come up with me sitting there and sniff my rod handle, fish slime I guess...cool video
  5. HA sadly no...apparently 1000 sized reels are hard to find in my area I will add that I have returned/exchanged many items over the years without issue...these 3 things happened in the past few months, maybe I've just been unlucky...and getting grumpy in my old age lol or maybe the stores around my area are all franchised and have stingy owners? Regardless, I'll still be avoiding crappy tire for a while....walmart is great for return/exchange issues, same with rona and home depot, never had any questions, receipt or no receipt
  6. I've had some bitter experiences there lately, when I was a kid my brother and I would fight over who got to spend hours looking through the new catogue first, I worked at crappy tire through high school and college, but I'll be avoiding that place like the plague from now on tried to exchange a lifetime warranty socket wrench, they refused because it "looked like I could have used a pipe on it"....it's a tool, they get scratched, I'd use one of my breaker bars if I needed leverage...refused to exchange it for me bought an air mattress on sale, the selling feature was built in air pump, thought it would be handy to keep in the truck, since I sleep under the canopy a lot....it was a junk to say the least, had the original receipt and box, tried to exchange 2 days later and buy a better/more expensive air mattress......store policy is only exchange, I actually wanted to spend more money at their store but all they could do was let me exchange it.....i left the mattress and receipt and walked away from the counter...."but sir, you can take a new one, are you just leaving this here"....why would I want another p.o.s??? I understand hygenic reasons, people buy an air mattress for the wknd and return it, but my mattress had to patch a hole out of the box and the built in pump was a joke...it was a defective return with a receipt, couldn't believe they wouldn't let me actually spend more money in the store on a better mattress found a stracic 1000 in the fishing cabinet, locked....it was the last one in stock and "story policy is not to sell the display model, it messes up the inventory count"...I asked to speak to the store manager, refused to sell the display model and kept explaining how it would mess up inventory....yeah buddy, I happen to be an accountant, I actually know a few things about inventory systems, what you're telling me is pure Bull...I had a cart with an air compressor, 2 deep cell batteries, 2 celing fans and a bunch of other small stuff....i walked out, lost a 1k sale becuase he wouldn't sell a fishing reel, was happy to go to home depot instead Is it just my bad luck, or does anybody else find crappy tire isnt' the store it was when i was a kid, the place is a joke, I live in the boonies, it's a 2 hr drive to the nearest major shopping centres, will try my hardest to avoid buying anything there again...all of these incidents happened at different stores too
  7. sienna 4000 will work great for what you want rods should be around the 10' length rapala northcoast series shimano convergence (clarus too but is more $) what baitcaster do you have? you can spend your money on a better rod and use your baitcaster to float fish, will work great with the exception of lighter setups
  8. and how were the beverages at Fanny's??? Hearst has always been top notch in my few visits, they have a good crew and focused on their customer, it's little things that really matter
  9. I have the same model year outboard...I've had zero problems with VRO, I personally think it gets a bad rap for improperly diagnosed issues (I hear the first gen VRO had issues and that opinion seems to have lingered?), but if you want to mix to each their own, as long as you've considered that (aka not mixing in the fuel and oil injection too) my o/b runs like a top but does NOT like to slow idle down to a trolling speed, I don't think any of the older mid range 2 strokes do that well...but it will never stall out on me when just running at idle...I have the carb rebuilt each spring before it hits the water, it likely doesn't need it but doesn't hurt, doesn't cost too much and is peace of mind for me my humble 2 cents worth is you need a carb rebuild and possibly low idle adjusted
  10. "traditional fisherman, jig and grub".....sounds like my grandfather, mostly fishes walleye? does he fish from shore or from a boat mostly you can't go wrong with most things shimano...i have a 6' L clarus rod with that sahara reel in 1000 size, it's a nice jigging combo but was a few bucks over 150 i think the st. croix's are nice rods too, premier and triumph for the price, good warranty
  11. avet reels, actually entirely made in the US, they make high end round casting reels, especially known for multi speed reels, used a lot for surf and salt fishing, have a cult like following for sturgeon too, they're a bit pricey and kinda hard to find...they might also make a reel with dual drags, on each side of the spool, can get up to 100 lbs of drag pressure, if not avet, it's another us reel company that makes a dual drag I just wish shimano made the trinidads or tekota in LH...I don't understand the guys who flip/cast with their right hand and then swap over to their left hand lol but to each their own
  12. well you gotta wiggle!!! i had to write some type of poem in high school: shake it off, do a little dance, but no matter what you do, last drop is always in your pants on a side note, i've heard you can now be ticketed for urinating in provincal parks? apparently the PH from the urine is upsetting the natural balance, I've heard this last time hiking the bruce trail
  13. that's exactly right, I'm right handed, so I prefer my dominant hand (stronger grip, slightly more coordination) to hold the rod and impart action and reel with my left, non dominant hand...I can get by wtih right handed trolling reels though...except for saltwater/sturgeon, I back the drag off slight more than I usually would, not a biggie but paying top dollar for a reel I would prefer left hand
  14. if you tie your own flies you can cut/buy foam eyes, often called booby eyes....one of my favourite carp flies is a foam eye on a dry fly hook or wide gap finese hook, and then a clump of maraboo, that's it, quick easy and cheap.....it's a visual strike which is less boring and not as easy to miss as a carp on a nymph...and you can literally just let it sit there for minutes on end and the maraboo will move with the slightest current....it's my fly fishing solution to carp rising to floating bread, works amazing...wading and sight casting when you find a pod of carp, cast about 20' ahead and just let it sit there, as they work their way feeding towards the fly, works great can't post with photobucket right now, but here is a link to a booby example http://www.kamfly.com/index.php/fly-fishing-articles/20-fishing-with-booby-flies
  15. I used to have a cheap $20 flea market special, bolo style, worked well enough, few seconds on the grinding wheel now and then my buddy has a very nice one, parang style, polished, exotic handle, I like it a lot, that curve helps chopping I think and pulling out if you get stuck...but I would never pay that much for something I'm going to smash around and beat up
  16. cost of maintenance? if it's just a general clean up, lube, etc usually about 30-40 bucks, last time I sent a reel to aikmans anyways, not sure on shimano's pricing for that
  17. while you are there, please feel free to admire that beautiful grey epoxy floor...have my sweat and blood in that floor ha what is wrong with your citical? just curious
  18. for starters, do not tell your wife you questioned her judgement LOL otherwise that sting will be a bit worse than a fly I think salty was pulling your leg, you want to avoid bananas and other high potassium and high sodium foods too, will attrack the bugs very cool stuff, always fun exploring old sites, never know what you could find, old tools and stuff
  19. what brand of fluoro? if by any chance it's vanish, that's your problem right there...not a fan myself or if your reel has baked in the sun in a hot truck? do that a few times and you'll see your line snap all the time
  20. glad to hear the cyclist is alright every time there is a near miss involving a wolf the CO authorities always call it a "new one" or not typical behviour...but it certainly is becoming more frequent....injured, desperate, habituated to associate humans with food, loner male pushed out by an alpha, whatever the reasons, they're becoming more frequent
  21. that 13 fishing teardrop reel looks interesting...but their model from last year was one of the biggest wastes of $100 for me...this time I'll wait for the reviews the AGS guides have a carbon frame...from my experience with carbon brake levers and shifter knobs (mountain biking), carbon snaps and you're done for the day, too fragile, I wouldn't trust myself with those...bending a rod guide is easily the most common f-up I do to my rods
  22. you could check the navionics website, there is a search function to search by lake...if they do have a map, the iphone/smartphone app is only $15, not amazing contours/detail but will give you a decent idea about the lake
  23. I'd be very surprised if you don't end up with new waders....I'd personally ask for a gift card to reimburse the gas I wasted on 2 visits always ask to speak with a manager if you're not happy, before you leave the store...gotta remember that most retail staff aren't empowered to override system defaults, it wasn't the guy at the customer service counter that personally refused to let you exchange, it was a system setup that didn't allow it print this thread off (and I think there was another recent BPS thread) and walk in and hand it to the manager
