  1. Yeap, same here. as it stands, I buy quite a bit of stuff from Cabelas, but I have a USA mailing address, so I get great prices and cheap or sometimes free shipping to my USA mailbox. However, I am sure I will make use of the Barrie Cabela's too, I do a fair bit of fishing in the Almaguin Highlands area and Cabela's Barrie will be my new pitstop on the way through. I am pretty excited for the opening of both Cabela's in Cheetowaga, NY and Barrie, Ont. and the Bass Pro Shop opening in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario.
  2. Do you plan on fishing quite a bit in 2014? or just one trip with buddies to try ice fishing? If so, get the fishing license, if not, then wait until February and ice fish without a license on February 15, 16 & 17. Keep in mind, conservation limits apply if you fish that weekend without a license. Also, if you happen to be under 18 years of age, no license is required to fish in Ontario, but be sure to bring ID out with you to prove you're age. Be safe, have fun and good luck!
  3. Thank you!! Very much appreciated!!
  4. I've been trying google for a couple days but keep getting pay websites and they all seem to be topo maps as far as I can tell, and angler atlas has the same thing, yet they are free, which is great, but not what I was looking for. As for Navionics, that app looks great and I was going to buy it but their search of lakes on their website does not list Bernard on it, however I still may get the app for my iphone as it looks like a useful app to have. I think tomorrow I will try calling some bait & tackle shops up that way to see if they sell lake contour maps and I'll just get it when I get up there. Thanks for taking the time to read this thread and help out with some recommendations.
  5. Any one have or know where I can get a map for Lake Bernard up in Strong/Sundridge, Ontario ? Was thinking about going up there in about a month or so, and would to get a map, as I am not familiar with the lake. Private message me if you have too, Thanks! Frank
  6. Thanks for the tip, I never use 3 way rigs, but I will take your advice and give it a shot next week, i'd be happy to land the smaillies that finesse fan did down there as opposed to my usual skunking.
  7. Awesome, all that matters is that it works for your needs and I am sure the Fishin Buddy 2 would suite my needs too. I just walked in the house from fishing all morning, my Humminbird 175 worked great also, there is a lot of carp in the river I was fishing in and they were registering on the finder no problem, seen some huge schools of them. The most useful part of it is the depth and water temps for me. All we caught was some pan fish today, as we couldn't go down the river too far because the wind was blowing my canoe all over the place, was still a good day to try out the finder and cast some lines.
  8. Hope it works out for you, I was looking at portable fish finders for about two months now and it came down to the last minute when I was going to buy the Humminbird Fishin Buddy2, I ended up buying a Humminbird PiranahMax 175 Portable, I have yet to try mine out and only problem I have had with it is the fact I wasted my time driving from Welland to LeBarons in Mississauga to purchase it, that store has the worst customer service I have seen in a long time, the fish finder was same price at Sail, so I should of just went there, anyways weather permitting, I am going to try it out in the morning, good luck with yours.
  9. LOL, Good idea, I may try that myself haha. I seriously have NO luck down there, if it wasn't for the hike and scenery, I wouldn't even bother going to try anymore.
  10. The u bolt strut beam claps look like this.... The lip of the clamp tightens with two nuts to the horizontal PVC cross member that goes across the canoe, my canoe has a lip/edge that goes to the outside of the boat, you just slide them up to the lip with the pole through the middle and tighten with a small adjustable wrench, they take 1 minute to put on and you do not need to drill through your canoe. If your canoe has a lip/edge on the inside like some do, then you just flip the ubolt clamp upside down, it works either way, I ordered mine through brofasco fastners in St Catharines and the two came out to $11.43 taxes in. Cheap and useful!
  11. LOL, he is sitting on the bottom of the canoe, I put a piece of foam pipe covering on the cross member of the outrigger so he can lean on the outrigger comfortably, the yoke is untouched by him and the outrigger. Great job on your outrigger!! I considered purchasing those boat bumper floats from Canadian Tire but clearly had a brain fart as to how to mount them, kudos to you and you're design, I love it!
  12. I JUST finished building my outriggers for my canoe yesterday, and took it out for a test and tune, it worked perfect!! I fit myself and two friends in the canoe and we all brought a pole and some lures, test and tune and some fish caught was a great two hour test drive for my canoe training wheels lol.. My outriggers break down into 3 pieces so they are able to be transported easily and I am able to adjust the floats vertically and to mount it to my canoe I used 2 "U-Bolt Strut Beam Clamps" this way I do not need to drill anything into my canoe, the beam claps tighten the cross member of the outrigger just using the inner or outer lip of the canoe. I did not want to use pool noodles or anything, I wanted to use old floats or something, but I was going nuts looking for something cheap, therefore went with jumbo pool noodles yesterday to get it out and they worked great! Anyways, here are a couple pictures of my home made PVC, fully adjustable canoe outriggers. Next is a trolling motor and portable fish finder for me lol
  13. I've fished some of those lakes and had some success on most of them through the ice, you're best bet is to just go check some of them out when you get there, most of them have public access, parking may be the only issue pending on how much snow is piled on the side of the roads. I usually stop in Burk's Falls and talk to the owner of the bait shop there, he is very helpful and will point you in proper direction for baits and lakes in the area you are going to. Good luck!
  14. Not sure why you would want to cross to Seneca Niagara Casino, when there is two on this side of the border and quite honestly, Seneca is no worse or no better than Casino Niagara or Fallsview Casino. Not to mention if you win a decent amount in New York State, it can be a real pain in the behind to claim/keep and bring it back to Canada.
  15. ^ lmao! When me and a few buddies go down to the whirlpool we are booking it too, and would say that 5-7 minutes is what we do it in too, but going back up is tougher. Last summer it was like 33 degrees {Celsius}and humid as a ..... well we will just use heck! and four of us had a hard time coming up the stairs, the higher we got the more humid it was, by the time we hit the top, well we may have got arrested if someone representing the law seen us one cloth away from birthday suits haha!
