  1. one of my favourite spinnerbaits is the BPS model with an interchangeable clevis...I'm always tinkering with blades, bending blades, drilling offset holes to mount them, adding a strip of flash, etc, etc some days it just doesn't matter if the bite is hot, but there are the days that tinkering pays off big time
  2. no maker marks? anything scripted?
  3. definitely not a spey stick..agreed on the dipping stick idea? or perhaps a pin rod for coarse fish from England? whatever it is, it is worth more with the patina, don't clean it...there's a few vintage forums, I've always had an answer fairly quickly after posting a pic
  4. Yes, I had the rod with the counterweight kit from bps, works great for me, I like the balance ...amazing work and I always get compliments....the reel is a Milner reel from cranbrook, bc...a complete Canadian combo 67ZL1 got it, I'm right near fort St. John and those perch were caught not too far from lesser slave And I'm always willing to point guys in the right direction if they visit BC, I lived around van and whis and did a lot of river fishing...now thst I'm further north Im slowly learning the skeena and bulkley watersheds...that salmon was on the kitimat river
  5. if you travel to London, I'd really recommend Steve at Lambeth Rod and Tackle, he can get you going in the right direction basically the sky, aka your budget, is the limit here.... what would your dad target mostly? a 5 or 6 wt is often considered a good all purpose rod (use that term loosely with fly fishing, kind of like golf clubs lol) and will handle most fish in your area I always recommend a medium action for beginners, it will help you feel the road load and is much more forgiving...stay away from the fast action stuff unless he plans to target steelhead and salmon, the reel doesn't need to be fancy, a click pawl drag reel would be fine, and cheaper....spend more of your budget on the rod and fly lines or extra spool, a good rod and line are more important than the reel, which is essentially just to hold line unless your targeting strong running fish a weight forward line or double taper for the lines...if he's new to fly fishing I wouldn't bother with a sinking or sink tip, can add that later if needed and nothing a few bb sized split shot can't fix on the creeks the st Croix triumph and premier are both affordable rods with good warranties a couple of flies won't last long with fly fishing, they get chewed up quick...and you usually save a few bucks if you buy by the dozen...again, talk to your local shop about matching the hatch if he's into trout fishing...most shops tend to carry some sort of trout collection, with a little sample of everything, nymphs, dries and streamers
  6. yep, the limit works for me, especially when they average 12" jumbos...I only keep a handful of limits for perch/walleye/pike and 1 or 2 good salmon a year.....but in AB there are a bunch of lakes that are completely closed to walleye retention and then about 12+ lakes actually have a lottery tag ! http://www.albertaregulations.ca/Walleye-Draws-Brochure-2013.pdf
  7. that thing is basically a massive bath tub, one of the better ones I've been in....it has a row of 3 seats in the front, and a seat in the rear for the guide to row we'll drift the smaller rivers in our pontoons, but the big rivers it's hard to beat a real drift boat with an experienced guide, some real nasty sweepers and rapids my next report will probably be Cold Lake, AB/SK for lake trout...tying up some 1oz jigs for those pigs now
  8. When most folks think about fishing in BC it tends to be mostly about the salmon and trout, but I am fortunate to live pretty close to one of the few natural walleye lakes - Charlie lake, which is located at about the 50 mile marker up the Alaska highway. Not many eyes over the 5lb mark, but is a fish factory for the 18-24 inchers. Figured I'd post a few pics, most of my buddies are surprised when I tell them I fish walleye in BC. My ice season got off to a slow start, rats found my otter portable, which in turn collected rain water all summer (why don't I check up on things! damnit) and also about 20 lbs of rat turds and urine. Back before Christmas I was dealing with a 5' long block of frozen ice/turds/urine...perfect excuse to pick up a new pop up while I thawed and sanitized over and over and over until the stench slowly went away I would not wish this stench on anybody, in hindsight, I should have been wearing a mask and gloves hahahah the only positive was those plano waterproof boxes are actually waterproof and 2 of my 3 ice boxes were completely ok, without any cleaning...the other box took some CLR and about 50 bucks in new hooks We had some very mild weather and ice got sketchy...froze up again and this past Sunday I was itching to get out. The navionics app is pretty handy, starting to use it more (this trip was essential as I forgot my GPS) and it was pretty accurate on water depth and easy to find one of my favourite hot spots. I drilled a few shallow holes in advance of the evening bite, and then got setup out deeper, before I had even dropped my line I was already smiling, love the LX7....I knew this was hard bottom, and I knew exactly what I was looking at I was on top of fish the whole day but it was a tough bite, I had to really downsize and they were incredibly light bites...all the walleyes were barely hooked in the tip of the nose...I kept my limit and threw back a good half dozen or so....the jig had to be perfectly horizontal, I usually tie loop knots but had to tie a clinch and set the knot so that the jig suspended nicely horizontal...once I downsized and got it dialed I was getting bit, lots of missed bites and lost fish halfway up landed a few small pike too and this guy was from my last visit, before the ice got really mushy all the walleye came on a tiny lindy jig I think it was, tipped with a sliver of tail or shrimp....but the pike came on some little jigs I tie up, feels a tiny bit nicer catching a fish on something you spun up yourself you can see how wide the pressure crack opened up a couple weeks ago That was it for the walleye, still gotta fry them up...but I don't post reports too often, so I'll throw in a few extras.... dogs enjoying the extra room in the pop up...and me enjoying focusing solely on fishing, and not constantly scanning for wolves or them dang coyotes, it's very nice having the extra room in the pop up to keep the mutts comfortable instead of exploring the shoreline a pennask strain stocker from a nearby lake my last steelhead trip of 2013 resulted in zero steelies, but I did get a big resident bow....there is not a single stocked trout in BC that can compare to a wild trout, the colours, the fight, totally different ball game with the wild guys and everybody should know who built that rod, I always get tons of compliments on it...thank you again Spiel! these perch I caught just before last ice 2013 and are from a northern AB lake, it has some pretty tight regs but I gotta say that I think the management plan is working, these fish are honestly the average size...and that's a tall boy can to clarify LOL...that big guy is a little better than average, probably close to my PB but I have seen others catch bigger this lake has a 5 perch limit and there are some legit 2 lbers in there I joined up on the OFC tourney this year, I'm fairly confident I can contribute with some big springs...this was my largest from 2013, 43" x 29...as always, I lost bigger but that only makes you fish harder largest sturgeon this year, not much to brag about on the fraser but any sturgeon is an awesome fish really...didnt' insure my boat for tidal but hoping to this year, if stupid work doesn't get in the way lol another small guy from the same day and for the hunters on here, a small 4pt mulie...that I missed spent 2 days tracking him after the shot and it is sick feeling indeed, I was very relieved and happy to see he survived the season that's it for now, since I joined the tourney this year I better work on more fishin reports lol cheers.
  9. I have some great memories from Big Ab and Little Ab, amazing walleye and pike....if you ran a few sleeper huts on the lake I bet you'd be booked solid...
  10. alberto and Albright are slightly different, Albright you only wrap down, alberto or improved Albright you wrap up and wrap down most of the knots I use have been mentioned here...but I'll add a dropper knot, use it mostly for fly fishing or ice fishing perch with more than one hook on the line (where the regs allow, which is sadly knot BC lol)
  11. great lure, tipped with a pork lizard one of my favourite lures for pike....I have a personal stash, still new in the box, I've even repainted my old ones, they are harder to find these days
  12. I have a different viewpoint on this...I think that photographer should have received a stiff fine, no different than feeding bears in a park, he is habituating a wild animal with human interaction and when that happens the animal always loses if he wants to photograph wild animals, go for it if he wants to interact and get super up close to an animal, go to a zoo
  13. have you read the bible, cover to cover? it is not a book about love IMO, it's a book about control most Christians have not even read the bible, which I find truly mind blowing, believing in something they've never read...blind faith I grew up in a Christian household, by grade 7 I had read enough to make my own decision and I do NOT believe....I've lost friends I grew up with because I don't believe, never had an argument or threw insults at each other, but because I don't believe, I'm going to hell, and they don't want my devil influences in their life when my grandfather passed away, it took my grandmother 7 yrs before she met another man...after less than 1 month of both of them attending our Baptist church together, they were asked not to return unless they planned on having the pastor marry them I believe in faith and spirituality, but not religion...religion is written by man, to control man...nothing more and nothing less
  14. x2 I like the Lindner's show but I change the channel at the end
  15. exactly right, no ink, heat generated...don't store receipts in your glove box unless you want a greyish black smudge... different issue, not my battery piss off, the original manager told me a scanned copy of the receipt was ok, should've got that in writing....try to exchange item still on valid warranty, here's my scanned copy, new manager "sorry, won't accept that" I've about 6 or 7 major beefs with crappy tire in the past couple years, now they are my last resort for anything...and pay with everything on my credit card so I have a record they will accept, pretty pathetic service from one of Canada's largest retailers
  16. Like I said before, I did work there for several years when I was younger, I know all about that stuff these policies are not solely the "direct result" of receipt scams, big box retailers don't need to support their customers anymore, and stringent policies help eliminate non revenue generating transactions....the bigger issue is it costs the company money to process their claims, that is why retailers more and more tell you deal with the manufacturer yourself....receipt scams are not a material issue my biggest piss off is all the battery issues, they record your personal info and battery s/n's, but they still demand you hold your receipt for the 5 yr exchange life??? it's called customer resource management, lots of software out there, my local small shop can give me a list of everything little thing I purchased at their store since I registered, but crappy tire can't, then why are you asking for my info? and when you do keep your receipt for 3 yrs, they still refuse to honour the warranty...
  17. a lot depends on what you're fishing for, and how the fish are biting sometimes too lively of a minnow is not a good thing on neutral/finicky fish... ie if you give it a big lead to swim in circles, a neutral fish may not respond to it I learned that lesson a few times, me not getting many very many bites but marking a lot....finally broke down and asked my neighbor who was hooking up...only different was the weight of our jigheads a lively minnow on a heavier jighead, and all it can only wiggle right in front of the fish, it can't swim circles down there I find dace are very hardy and lively, but I get less bites, so I tend to fish them on a heavier setup compared to emerald shiners
  18. I will agree with you that the Lindsay store is a good store, went to school for 4 yrs and that store was always good....but they are the exception, not the norm
  19. nicely done! I think that fly has bruiser pike written all over it how long does it take you to spin that bad boy up?
  20. add me to the fraud list lol my morals/conscience feels no guilt doing the receipt scam at crappy tire....I've had enough crappy service encounters at multiple locations in different provinces, yes there are good managers/franchisee owners, but they still can't override the corporate policies I started a rant about crappy tire maybe 6 months back, linked the thread in my complaint email and got 1 of 3 issues resolved but it's pretty pathetic I had to resort to doing that when I argued with one store manager, all he could do was keep saying "sorry, it's not me, I can't override the computer, please email the customer service email and let them know, I can't change anything" I used to work there for a couple years way back when, their corporate philosophy has definitely changed...I remember my store manager making things right for the customer on numerous occasions, it's not like that anymore
  21. like I just posted on another thread (and probably spammed some other threads a while back) ardisam has great customer service....service like that deserves recognition, they shipped express to me and even followed up with a voicemail to make sure I received and had no troubles installing hard to beat service like that, I'd try calling them but in the short term just use pliers to adjust the switch or you could just trim the plastic cover to allow easier finger access too?
  22. if you're gonna try the crappy tire scam, why not just tell ardisam you bought it this year and lost the receipt? they are pretty good in the customer service dept, they actually shipped express for me
  23. I picked up a duffel bag at value village, cut patches, bought sewing needles at walmart and used old power pro to sew it on, cost about 5 bucks for a whole lot of patch material
  24. it's all personal preference...you'll get 20 different answers, there is no "best" line really but for perch fishing, I'd keep it simple with 4lb mono (I think some of your research there may have been based on some personal preferences)
