  1. hmmm, so a new member asks a question and finds out it's illegal(he also mentioned eating them, which is legal)....isn't that a great function of these online forums? to educate it's sometimes nice to pass along wisdom, rather than tearing a young guy a new crap hole... only leopard frogs can be used as bait....but as for the eating question, bull frog legs taste great fried in butter or bbq'ed with your preferred sauce, comparable to a chicken wing kind of BullfrogsHolders of a valid recreational fishing licence may catch and retain bullfrogs for personal use from July 21 - Oct. 15; the possession limit is 10. No firearm other than a longbow or crossbow may be used to take bullfrogs. A person may hunt bullfrogs at night without a firearm and may shine a light for that purpose. Bullfrogs may not be taken in the City of Ottawa, the Counties of Prescott and Russell, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Leeds and Grenville, Lanark, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, Prince Edward, Northumberland, Peterborough, the City of Kawartha Lakes, or in the townships in the County of Hastings south of, and including, the townships of Marmora and Lake, Tudor and Cashel, Elzevir and Grimsthorpe. Please note it is illegal to take bullfrogs, northern leopard frogs, green frogs or snapping turtles from provincial parks. http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/2ColumnSubPage/STEL02_165367.html
  2. larger retailers have an easier time absorbing returns/warranties than small businesses, it is what it is...a lot of returns are basically just customer abuse returns i try to shop with locally owned businesses first but if not, the large box store with the best return/warranty policy tends to get my business...ie: not all fishing stores honour shimano over the counter warranty
  3. good to hear, I have always found the managers at BPS to be very accommodating and will go the extra mile to keep the customer happy.....the people at customer service are not empowered so can't really blame them for that
  4. they make a well built jon boat, lot of guys run rivers with a jet o/b and they stand up well to abuse
  5. i've only bought used trailers off kijiji and craigslist, the money i saved on purchase price was well above and beyond cost for re-wiring lights and replacing bearings and tires, which is easy for anybody to figure out on their own...might not be pretty but if you want to save money
  6. no way braid is more abrasion resitant than good mono of fluoro...zebra mussels, rusty dock poles, rip rap, etc slice through braid like butter i use swivels for trolling to help with line twist but i don't like to reel through guides (it does cause damage, can take pics of that) and I typically use a 3-5' leader so it's hard to cast without reeling the swivel through the guides I also look at it as a swivel involves 2 knots, a knot being the weakest point in most cases...where as an improved albright/alberto is just 1 knot/weak point at about 90% of breaking strength another great knot is called red phillips knot...it's kind of a variation on the albright knot, instead of just making a bend in the line, tie an overhand knot pulled extremely tight, fold the tag end forward/down and then finish like an albright or nail knot, have tied both ways with good results, works well with light or heavy leaders i find double uni's and blood knots do pass through guides easily, but have poor shock strength, always break on the hookset, I only use them on fly leaders
  7. try swinging a tiny dick nite spoon...or a single colorado blade...especially when you come out west....you might like the results they cast easier than huge intruders too agreed on the triploid thing....those twin brothers on diefenbaker, all of those records rainbows are genetic mutants too?
  8. yep, I run seafoam in every tank, a full can if I'm filling the tank from almost empty...otherwise eyeball half or a quarter can accordingly you could try a trolling plate or pulling a small drift sock (or bucket) to slow you down...but that affects your steering a bit, I've tried running a small sock under the bow, tied from the two front cleats, this seems to work better with steering control but you need to have it centered below the hull which can be tricky and if you're in a heavy chop your the bow will take a pounding sinker explained it better than me....at slow speed there is too much oil added to the mix...my local shop explained it all to me, but I'm not mechanic smart enough to explain it back...lol
  9. like I said, I have that same outboard, it'll shudder at slow speeds for extended periods, shudder but won't stall on me but I don't troll with it ever, it's not a trolling motor...my understanding (which may be wrong too, some mechanics don't agree with each other) is that at slow trolling speeds carbon and other deposits build up and causes the misfiring and shuddering effect you feel...it "loads up" and you need to run at high speed to blow/burn out the deposits...I was also told it'll decrease the life of your spark plugs....just what my shop tells me glad to hear it's working better for you now, sucks to have down time in the middle of the summer
  10. not necessary but they are convenient the tungsten weights allegedly produce more sound when bouncing off rocks, not sure how much more compared to lead but apparenlty more sensitive too, being denser...I just think they sink a tiny bit faster, helpful in deeper water I do buy them but won't hesitate to just use a regular split shot or regular bell sinker same thing with hooks, drop shot specific hooks tend to come in smaller packages and more expensive...vmc spin shots are good and do work as intended....but i still prefer a tiny swivel about a foot up, light wire finesse hook and then my split shot
  11. not much more than mono..."invisibility" isn't the benefit of fluoro, the real/only benefit is abrasion resistance refractive indexes, air to water 1.33, fluoro is 1.42 and mono is 1.62....it reflects light closer to the way water reflects light, a tiny bit better than mono
  12. shipping ahead is a viable option if you are flying into a major destination....flying into northern areas and I wouldn't risk it...I moved to northern BC, and a few other friends to northern AB and the guaranteed express deliveries are not applicable in these areas with any of the shipping companies (dhl, ups, purolator, fedex, cdn post)...it's a crap shoot when it shows up in the northern areas I find greyhound to be the cheapest most reliable, as long as they have a route up there, your stuff will get there on the next bus I'm not sure if thunder bay would get daily deliveries from the big shippers, I'd make double sure you ship well ahead of when you need them there....i had my car breakdown in thunder bay, the whole city seemed to shut down at 430 LOL...was not a fun couple days waiting for a starter to be delivered I was allowed to bring ice fishing rods/reels onboard as carry on...they just requested that there be no hooks...they did not ask to remove the line...you might be allowed 2 piece rods, just make sure they are properly packed together I have a 7'6' white pvc tube I use for checking in 1 piece rods, the cap must be removable, and every time I need to open the cap and take all my rods out for inspection...they want to look inside and see a bare tube, and then see individual fishing rods...i even have to remove the rods from the rod socks for inspection sometimes but not always....takes a good 15-20 mins, so get there early for that
  13. what brand fluoro were you using? was it vanish, that is the worst fluoro out there....maybe you just have bad leaders I fell for the fluoro craze but then returned back to regular mono leaders for most of my fishing....I've done just as well with 80 lb mono as 80 lb fluoro for pike and it's waaayyy cheaper
  14. even if it was legal harvest, it is highly unethical (and illegal) to let the edible meat go to waste...accidents happen, as the other poster suggested, they keep their strength well after losing their heads....but I just think that is unlikely...I've ate snapper soup and it was pretty good, I would make sure that I didn't lose a snapper if I killed it it does no harm reporting it to the CO's...perhaps there have been more dead turtles found in the area? who knows....
  15. sad indeed....I'd like to stay optimistic about legal harvest, but in reality I doubt that was what happened there...you just see the old school mentality too much....same as guys who kill snakes just because it's a snake did you report it to the CO's?
  16. if minn kota partnered with lowrance wouldn't that be a perfect world....people (like me) are buying HB's mostly because of minn kota
  17. this is true if you have a downrigger, drop the ball down with a big sucker, nose hooked, on 20' of line and slowly drift with a sock or two out...set the hook quickly, maybe fish barbless too....deep water outisde of bays, deep drop offs, ledges, saddles/humps, etc....look for deep water near feeding areas
  18. had that happen quite a few times on the Ottonabee river, usually the smallies come to the boat with big cuts and their guts hanging out...one of them all I got was just the head and gills of a 13-14" smallie it got to happen so often (couple times a week the one summer) we began to wonder if muskies follow the boat the way seals actually follow boats and steal salmon I grew up fishing a small gravel pit for largemouth and they are fairly cannibalistic too
  19. looks like a treble actually meant for snagging, with a weight on the shaft...at least the fish looks to be in good health regardless...lots of lamprey wounds on them too
  20. bps vaughan is 130k sq ft walmarts start at 100k sq ft and the super centres get up to 250k sq ft...it's sad I still remember this from my high school employment there lol
  21. another awesome report!! looks like one heck of a time that is a very impressive looking camp too
  22. cool stuff, think hummingbird will win over a lot of customers with this
  23. well if the store is anything like the edmonton and saskatoon stores you're in for a disappointment....I order online all the time, but won't step foot in their stores....we get the "canadian downsized version"....poor selection and insane markups
  24. the gulp earth worms in the jar are the best, stopped buying real worms, they stink and they work
  25. as a former crappy tire employee during my teenage years (and walmart too) I don't consider my expectations unrealistic....I would like to buy something you have on your shelf...I would like to return something 2 days after purchase with a receipt because it was defective...lifetime warranty exchange.... but I've seen lots of ridiculous returns too, buying a massive bbq for the wknd for a family reunion and then returning it, which was allowed.....buying a 3 pack of video games and returning them individually for 3 times the price at walmart....I also got a return of about 2 dozen rapalas to put back on the shelf, but they had opened the boxes carefully and swapped the lures with the cheapest lures I've ever seen, dollarama lures maybe? girl at customer service obviously had no idea what a rapala looks like
