  1. It's easy to birdnest a line if you start reeling in very loose line without any tension. You end up reeling in loops of twisted line and that is the start of the birdsnest. Lesson learnt from years of untangling kids reels and watching them go back and tangle again a few casts later.
  2. I think I dated yer sister some years back
  3. Sounds like a fantastic weekend
  4. I've found my best rates for boats and skidoos through state farm in the past.
  5. Are you sure you're not some closet "deadhead" Sharp looking piece. Me likes.
  6. How the wheels are driven, what gearing, positioning all have a part in determining whether you are on the right track. I count 6 blades on the wheel, not sufficient. 12 is the norm. If a stern wheeler, the steering must be placed before your drive wheels What manner of motor, and will the linkage be belt, worm gear, piston arm. I'm guessing the platform will be at least 12' x 6'? It's an interesting challenge you have taken on. Looking forward to seeing this develop
  7. Those shows were an annual event when I was a kid when we lived in TOronto. Hopping on the Bathurst "car" to the CNE loop. Spending a whole day there and still not seeing it all. Have to admit I went through all of last year's fishing show in all of 2 1/2 hours but I spent a lot more time yakking with folks I knew.
  8. Now I can't get this outta my head.
  9. That's cause he never really learnt the piece. Any grade schooler can play 8 simple notes. Just listen to what a little imagination can do to those same 8 boring notes.
  10. Sadly, Roy, falling down is a regular part of living, whether at home or outdoors. Motor control, and the ability to react/respond have been deteriorating for decades. I just try to not let it get in my way.
  11. Went out to see if I could find another productive break in the shore ice. For my efforts I got a white stripe. Sadly mother nature got the better of me. Was only a matter of time with my penchant for falling over Stepped into a snow filled hole and went for a spin. Heard my knee go pop real good. Didn't feel a thing, and figgered myself lucky, but the leg was not doing what I wanted. Got home and a few hours later I finally start to feel the knee seizing up . Appears I'm supposed to be on crutches for a few weeks. We'll see about that. I have plans on being at Fishing for Tyler and doing more than spectating.
  12. There is an entire subforum dedicated to the OFC tournies http://ontariofishingcommunity.com/forums/index.php?showforum=44
  13. When you take the kids to the magic kingdom, you will need the full day, right up to closing. There are 2 places to take the kids. Don't do a heavy breakfast. For supper,1) the Crystal Palace for a buffet with Pooh and friends My preference 2) Liberty Tavern for a Thanksgiving style dinner served by Mickey and friends. Make reservations in advance as character meals are popular and fun. As for timing, there is a noon hour stage show at Cinderella castle, Mainstreet parade at 3. Light parade and fireworks at dark.
  14. I'll stand to as a captain again.
  15. The city of Orlando has a list of public parks, all with stocked lakes, with details about parking, facilities, etc. Here's the link. http://www.cityoforlando.net/public_works/stormwater/fishing.htm Disney offers fishing charters within the park. I have found that just about every large pond in the greater Orlando area has fish of one sort or another. At one trade conference, the Pond behind the hotel even had a gator in it til animal control trapped it.
  16. Rollerball meets Asian carp?
  17. At least it was a "fishing show". Not like today's 30 minute commercials.
  18. As a kid I used to hope for the day I would be invited to scuttlebutt lodge. I still have a book of his poems tucked aways somewhere. I remember, some decades back, the cabin being set up at the sportsman show, and waiting patiently to see the man in person.
  19. There are a couple of stamp exhibitions held in Toronto every year. The foremost dealers and retailers will be found there. Stay away from Vance Auctions. As for the collection values. This is the bad news. Catalogue value only has meaning to insurers. There is no growth in the philately market in over 20 years. I collected stamps for nearly 40 years, and only recently gave it up. Even if you get a fair appraisal, the market is small an shrinking, and 10% is all that one will offer for the collection. The other route is to break up the collection, and go for the dollar value of the prime specimens. That takes time. patience, knowledge.
  20. You know something Mercman. First time out, every year, I am a little tentative and hesitant on the ice. That kind of caution is a good thing. Reduces the likelihood of swimmin with the fishes. Looks like a good outing, and you had fun.
  21. I am green with envy. Would love to hear this live one more time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oovbKFWf9qU&list=FLlEdYLs6kKUqyERyN0fBmBA&index=2&feature=plpp_video
  22. I feel so sorry for the family.
  23. As already mentioned, the shows have lost a lot of their lustre. Many of the regular tackle shops stopped going. They now have their own in house spring sales. For your stated wants, the spring fishing show in Mississauga is the better bet. The old Sportsman Show used to be really something. Red Fisher had his cabin set up. LeBarons took up the whole east wall of the one building. The dog show used to be huge. You did not have 1/2 a dozen sock vendors and first aid suppliers.
  24. The ice I fished was 1/2" thick. There is no ice at the smelt hole so far.
