  1. It is a parasite of fish and snails. The black spots are the remnant of the old worm. They are, despite the unpleasant appearance, harmless to us. The warmer the water, the worse the spotting is.
  2. Sudden shift in the weather overnight really screwed it up today. Yep, misery loves company. My tally today, 2 hammer handles and a 14" bass for 4 hours work. At least something got caught.
  3. Great for hanging mobiles, making windchimes or repairing old mocassins. 12 lb Fireline is far superior to the thread the shoe factory uses or As Marko said, let the local tackle shop recycle it for you.
  4. Hitting the backwaters on a road trip is always a lot o fun. Thanks for sharing.
  5. On a beautiful day like today, you had better expect me to be going stir crazy otherwise I must have died. No chance on me getting grounded. I'm outright gnarly when I'm stuck at home. Besides, Mr Bill was there to make sure I didn't get into any trouble like falling out of the boat or whacking myself on the console again As long as I have a chaperone all is good. As for the walter. The stocking program is paying real dividends. I've caught fish in 4 year classes this year with sizes from 11" to 20". The pike fishery will quickly improve, as well, with the changes in the regs.
  6. Spinning reel or another homemade black spool creation.
  7. Got a hold of my buddy Bill to come out and play on the river today. Beautiful day for fishing. Blue skies, nice breeze and fish biting. The great thing about rivers like the Welland, you never know what's gonna bite. The drill: drift trolling with the wind. Gear: a 5' lite rod and 10lb braid. Weapon: Ugliboys harness. The drift covered a 1/2 mile section of water. A few perch and rockbass interspersed with some of the following: and my guest for breakfast We would have stayed into the evening, but we could already feel our ears burning. Would not want to upset our lovely wives, now would we?
  8. You missed crappie and sunfish.
  9. I've got a big old beastie that does almost the same thing to my spinnerbaits. Over the summer I've been to the same hole 8-9 times. I'm standing on a ledge 6 ft above the water so I get to see every movement. Toss a spinnerbait and tail out and half way in the retrieve this fish comes up and smacks it. Once or twice and then turns. Won't hit the same bait twice. I've gone through the same ritual every time with a different spinnerbait each outing. He swipes at it, never opens his mouth and turns away. Hasn't chased body or jerk baits at all. Before season's done I'm gonna get him. And if the spineerbait won't work, dynamite will It's frustrating Rizzo. Just keep at him and you'll finally get him.
  10. We won tickets for dinner and the show. Different from other shows they've done but still a great concept performance.
  11. I think this misfire fits the words of Forrest Gump best "Stupid is as stupid does". How can anyone be so dense as to not check the local regs first.
  12. Here is some real sense. If you already have a decent salary, try and keep it as a nest egg for now. Life can and does throw some wicked curve balls. Illness and disability bring about radical lifestyle changes and that nest egg can suddenly be a big blessing.
  13. Cold nights followed by nice sunny skies? FEEDING TIME.
  14. Air mattresses are O.K. for warm weather camping, and can be quite bad for you in early spring/late fall. As air temps drop, so does the temp. in the mattress. A solid matress or roll will at least offer you more insulation. If the ground is cold, that cold quickly transfers through the air mattress to your bag. One good all weather cheat for your sleeping bag is a fleece liner. They even make a great difference with a cheaper bag. You should see some of the sleeping bags some boys will bring with them on their first all weather camp. Can't blame them, its all their folks could afford. I've always kept a few extra micro fleeces and they have been the difference in avoiding a bad camping experience.
  15. I never had a dad, but I have an old uncle down in the maritimes who doesn't get to fish any more due to his lack of mobility. Every 2 years he comes and stays in Ontario and i get him and my mom out in the boat and we try to fish waters they knew as kids. He may have to crawl in and out of the boat but wouldn't miss it for the world. We never care what we are catching. We're simply fishing. Doing together what our family has shared a hundred years and more. Every moment on the water is pure gold on those days. Well share bull and banter, reminesce and tell a number of tall tales. It also gives us time to remember our forebears who we miss so dearly now in our later years. I am ever so thankful for these brief moments in time that we share. Only too soon they too will be a faded memory. I'm sure you all feel the same way as well.
  16. Have you thought about the hybrid or dual fuel furnaces. Oil/wood or oil/pellet. Just a thought. I've been heating my place solely on wood the past 18 years, with a hydro backup when nobody is home.
  17. Thank you for the listen I've not heard that tune in many a year. Used to get the squid right in the harbours in N.S. You grab a rod and a couple of squid jigs and head for the pier from late afternoon til dark. Even the small squid puts up a heckuva fight.
  18. cute, cute, cute, cute, cute,........... A pal who will always listen to your every word when the rest of your family is ignoring you Enjoy!
  19. Quality time to cherish while we can
  20. It was a pretty day out and I needed to stretch the old legs. Felt pretty good so I decided on some hiking. Grabbed the backpack, 3 rods, and away we go. For those of you not familiar with Thorold, the town is surrounded by a series of ponds, channels and canals known as L. Gibson. Boating is not allowed so shoreline fishing is all you can do. Wading is also not allowed There is far more shoreline than you can hope to cover in a day. The back areas are beautiful with an abundance of wildlife just steps from town. There are also a couple of hiking trails following some of the shoreline. As for the fishing, today was not a banner day. The bite was off. I said I brought 3 rods: one for spinerbaits-useless. One for worms, and one for tubes. Lot of trial and error before connecting, but today's ticket was small baits. 4" carolina rigged worms and 2" tubes. There were no big fish caught. 6 dink bass in all But look at what else was hitting my plastics. This fella was on a 2" tube The perch was big fish of the day at 11 1/2" on the 4" worm. The panfish were hungrier than the bass thats for sure. In all, no skunk, lots of fresh air, exercise and peace. Just gotta love it
  21. If the weather stays warmer, 50+, keep hunting in the shallow bays. They are in there feeding. As soon as the cold front hits they shut down. I've had to jig in 70fw during a front to pick up a couple of table fish.
  22. People in Venezuela are not paying world prices for the oil and gas that comes out of their ground. So why are we paying world prices for Canadian fuels. That is the bigger question. Why a gas station charges this or that price is simply price fixing to max profits. Oil company, investors and the tax man all win. We get screwed. The bigger screw is the one all us Canadians get shafted with when we sell all our resources away and pay triple, or more, to buy it back. All the while, the boys on Wall St and Bay St. laugh while they make their puppets dance in Ottawa. Why do you think the main political parties have leaders that look pretty, but lack the necessary backbone to face real issues. That's my rant
  23. Good lists and lots of pics from the top locations. Lots and lots of fish porn. Please.
  24. The sil I refer to is the actual pickled herring, in jars, in the different types of marinade. I may be using the Swede name for it. In desperation I can always look for a Suomi Aitta, or the nearest IKEA. How does this sound. A piece of hard rye, with a layer of cream cheese and a piece of sil on top. Washed down with a generous mouthful, or two, of beer.
  25. (you are welcome?) I regret My Finnish and Swedish is limited to cordial greetings. Gramp was a Swede, Gram a Finn from Karjala. THe solution was that we all spoke English. You wouldn't happen to have a good recipe for making Sil? A few of the oldtimers would make it here using smelts. All this reminescing has started up a craving for some pulla, rissa puri and some Lingonberry Brandy, or Peder Heering to wash it all down with.
