Commercial fishermen have always caught sturgeon in their nets. In the old days they were laid out on a farm field and plowed in as fertilizer. During the depression folks would wait for the boats to come in and hope they had caught a few sturgeon in the nets. One fish put a lot of meat on the table. There was a warm glow to the old naptha lamps that propane doesn't have. Maybe its just my imagination. Growing up, we did not see hydro or flush toilets til 1970. For under $200 total? Pfleuger President reel. A good, dependable mid range reel. Not overly expensive $70ish. I"ve put mine through a lot of abuse in 2 years. As for the rod, if you are fishing walleye more than bass, lighter is better. I use a 5' light or ultralite for walleye. For bass It all depends on the style of fishing. Do you need a finesse rod or a tow truck and 50lb. cable? All I can suggest is find a rod that feels comfortable in your hand and has good sensitivity. There are a lot of good rods out there, and a lot of people have deep brand loyalties.

Drifting is still my prefered means of searching out fish on new water or in tough conditions. I use the trolling motor for position control. When there are more than 2 in the boat, it also allows everyone an equal shot at fishing without snagging one another casting. Lots of people still drift fish. I must make 1000 harnesses a year for people (of course, 50 are just for me)

There is also the debate over where the fry are released. Fry were originally released in a trib or stream to give them time to imprint on the body of water. This would help establish natural replenishment and breeding. Current practice with Pacifics merely sustains a put and take fishery. Fry are released off the harbours and piers with no chance to imprint on a suitable trib for spawning. Possibly to free up tribs for the Atlantic program and more trout.
