  1. I remember when gas was 7 cents a gallon - when you pulled into a gas station the attendant would clean your windows, check your oil, give you a free map if you wanted one, gave you a water glass and green stamps that you could trade for stuff in catalogue - the first job I had working was working at a car dealership getting paid 65 cents an hour Life in those days was much more simple - and I think better except for the health care that is now much better I use to go fishing with my uncle back then - rented a wooden row boat with oars for a buck a day - could go out in the lake and catch all kind of fish which we took home to eat - yep - "those were the days my friend - I thought they would never end "
  2. I just did some work on my '91 bass tracker - put in a new live well pump - to do that I had to remove the gas tank - some of the flooring was soft so I removed the carpet and rotted wood - the wood was all wet under the carpet - I know the carpet looks good but I think it stays wet longer and causes the wood to eventually rot _ I got some 3/4 " plywood and painted it with an under coat and couple layers of good outdoor paint - no carpet anymore - years ago I did the thing with the flooring in another part of the boat and it held up real good - if needed I"ll paint the floor once in awhile
  3. There is a TV program that comes on once a week down here - it's called Monsters Inside Me - it tells true stories of people getting parasites various ways - boy when you watch that program it scares the hell out of you - a lot of people get very sick and almost die and a lot of times the doctors don't know what is wrong with you until everything else has been tried and tested - what I've learned is to wash your food - watch where you eat out - cook your food - keep your mouth closed when swimming - wash your hands - the one story was about a guy who ended up going blind in one eye because a worm was in his eye - it was a parasite that he picked at a horse show from eating from one of the vendors
  4. Boy that is terrible - that's why I chain my boat to an object that can't be moved whenever I fish somewhere in Ontario - sure they can cut the chain with a cutter but it will take a lot more work and can be caught - also my boat is an old one so it isn't something that stands out - One thing down here if you catch someone stealing your boat or things from the boat you can beat the crap out of the guy - up there you probably get into trouble = it is a shame but you have to assume that there are crooks all over the place and live with this in mind - hope the guy had his boat insured otherwise he is out some big bucks
  5. I live on a hill out in the country - about a mile down the road was a neighbor who had a son who was a pilot in the Marine Corps - he flew a Harrier jet - this neighbor's house was down at the bottom of a hill and a lot lower than my house - the neighbor called me one day and said that her son was taking a Harrier jet up to a air show being held outside of Wilkes-Barre Pa.and that he was going to fly over their house on his way up to the show - she told me about the time that he would be flying over It happened to be my grandson's birthday that day and he was staying with me for part of the day - I told him that I had a special birthday present for him We were out in the yard looking toward the south over a lake down the road and saw this speck coming towards us - pretty soon this jet flew over the neighbor's house and over my yard so low I could have hit the plane with a rock - he circled around a second time - came over the yard and waved to us - and then headed up north - we could clearly see him in the cockpit - sure are impressive when you see them that close - I like the new planes but somehow the old WWII planes hold a certain charm for me - being that I was a kid during that war and had a model of just about every plane hanging from the ceiling of my bedroom
  6. I'm thinking of getting a drone - mostly to look at things around the area where I live - since I live in the country I won't be bothering any neighbors - it would allow me to look over my property and adjoining land - the question I have - can I fly it in Canada and take pictures when I'm fishing up there - anyone have any thoughts - thanks - Joe
  7. When your dealing with fuel - oil, gas, coal etc. - you do your pricing on what is called replacement cost - not on the cost of the fuel you have in storage - I worked for a power company and that was how the cost of the electricity was determined - if it was a coal burning station the cost of its output was determined on the cost of coal at the time not on the cost of the coal pile out in the coal yard - that's the same way gas is priced - if done right the cost of gas will go down even if the gas being sold cost more - now here is the rub - in the power industry there are rules that must be followed but I don't know if there is anyone watching if the gas stations are doing the way it is suppose to work -
  8. Just for the record - it was Bill Clinton that signed the NAFTA - not Reagan - also be glad that you can get gas - there was a time in the 70s when you couldn't get gas at any price - I see people buying bottled water at a price higher than gas and just think how easy it is to bottle water than it is to make gas - when the price of gas is high don't ride around as much
  9. When I bought my 2005 F350 Super Duty I was told that 70% of the people buying that truck ended buying a diesel - I went with a gas engine - 5.4 V8 - the reason I did that was because I also travel all over Canada with my truck camper pulling a boat and always have a lot of extra gas in case I need it - I have a 13 gallon tank in the boat and an extra 12 gallon tank for the boat - sometimes you can't always get diesel fuel if your way up in the boondocks - besides down here for some reason diesel fuel costs more that gas - I always think I made a good choice especially when you hear of the troubles connected with owning a diesel
  10. https://www.trulia.com/homes/Pennsylvania/Mohrsville/sold/497218-3-Erin-Way-Mohrsville-PA-19541- some difference in prices I'd say
  11. To make sure that you don't get Lyme Disease do this - buy Permethrin - you spray this stuff on your clothing and it is good for around 6 weeks even if you wash the clothing - it actually kills the ticks if they get on your clothing - I spray the pants that I wear when I work on my property - I lay the pants on the ground and spray the pants until they get wet - you let them dry and there is no harm from using the stuff - during hunting season I spray all my clothing - you can buy this stuff on Amazon from Sawyer -
  12. Great - the ones not going to Canada are either rioting or crying like a bunch of babies - I was losing faith in the people of this country but the vote last Tuesday gave me hope again - our colleges are full of spoiled brates who don't even know what life is all about - letting 18 year olds vote was a big mistake - once they get jobs, raise a family, buy a house .etc and do something worthwhile they hopefully will realize what is going on -
  13. I have a 1991 OMC 40 HP motor and have never changed the impeller on this motor - I know that so many people say that it needs to be changed quite often but so far I haven't had any problems - but just in case I bought a replacement kit this pass summer and intent to change it in the near future - looking at what has to be done it looks like it is easy enough to do - that is after I figure on how to disconnect the shift rod up the motor head -
  14. Well all I know is that I use to go to Nip a couple times a year - stay at a campground and spend money in that area - now I don't go there anymore -
  15. Why? -
  16. I tied my boat up on a dock where I was camping using a rope - the waves from the big boats passing near the dock caused the rope to break and the boat drifted up along the shore - lucky the wind was blowing partly towards shore and I was able to walk up the shore line and get the boat - it was rough going because the shore line was all cattails and marshy grass - at times I was up to my knees in muck - if the wind had been blowing away from shore I'd still be looking for the boat - now I use a chain to tie the boat - also put a lock on the chain - live and learn
  17. Dave - I just got done reading a book - Off grid and free by Ron Melchiore - he and his wife did pretty much what you are doing - they built a house on Hockley Lake about 100 miles from a town called La Ronge in northern Saskatchewan - in their case they had to have every thing flown in by plane - the one thing that did make an impression with me is the danger of fire - they actually put a sprinkler system mounted on real high trees around their house - they almost lost everything because of a couple fires that happened - I'm sure you would enjoy reading the book - best wishes - Joe
  18. That brings up a question - I have a 40 hp and a 5 hp kicker on my boat - I guess it's ok to go on a lake with a 10 hp restriction as long as you don't use the 40 and only use the 5 hp
  19. All the crook needs to do is get a spray can of paint and cover the white part of the motor - no way you gonna tell that this is the motor your looking for - I have one of those gadgets that lock the small outboard to the boat - in fact I tie everything down with a chain and lock - if someone has a mind to steal anything they are going to have to work for it - and hope that I don't see them stealing anything cause they'll get a face full of bear spray for their troubles =
  20. Cancer is just a part of living - we have billions of cells in our body and many die and regenerate themselves and when this happens enough - some cells just go wacky - keeping your immune system strong may help - most times there isn't any rime or reason Take my father-in-law - he was an old timer that worked in the coal mines most of his live - he drank like a fish and ate everything that is not good for you - every ten times that I met him at least 8 of the times he was kinda lite up - smoked like a fire - I saw him eat a raw bacon sandwiches many times - he cashed in at 87 - my wife on the other hand - his daughter - never drank, never smoked, always read the labels on the food that she was buying - spent a lot of money in health stores - she died when she was 62 - bladder cancer - try and figure that out Like the book says - a time to live and a time to die
  21. Boy - I hate to say this but you guys are out in left field when it comes to recognizing what is going on down here with regard to politics - people are sick and tired of the same old crap from both parties and finally a guy comes along who is an outsider and will change things - our country has been declining because of the liberal, far left policies instituted by Obama and his crew and the people don't like it - he and Clinton has made a mess of everything they touched - both at home and overseas I hope the hell Trump is elected because if Clinton gets elected it is all over for this country - Clinton is nothing but a lying crook - she doesn't even know what telling the truth is - There was I time when I was very proud to be an American - but today I have very little in common with this country - I can't relate to it - maybe Trump will bring America back to where it was - making America great again -
  22. You guys wearing baseball type caps - your must better off with a wide brim hat to cover your ears - that's where I got some cancer - on the top of my ear -
  23. Boy - I remember when I was growing up - we ran around all summer with our shirts off and got sunburned a lot - to a point where our skin would blister and eventually peal off - we were told that the sun was good for you because you got vit D that way - I've had some cancer on my one ear - that was taken care of - around my place I wear a wide brim hat but don't use any sun screen - when I'm out fishing I do because the sun reflects off the water - I think growing a beard would help keeping the sun off you face Somehow I think it is more than just the sun that is involved because sometimes you hear of people getting cancer in spots that rarely get any sun - if ever - When I work in the sun now I wear an old white long sleeved dress shirt - I think that is better than nothing
  24. It happened about a year ago - up in the Poconos - the township supervisors were giving some old timer a hard time about something - I don't remember what it was anymore - then at one meeting he pulls out his gun and starts firing - killed one of the supervisors and wounded a couple - the old timer is in jail now - living off the tax payers - now the supervisors are a little more careful who they piss off - As far as the cost of taking a dump - I live in the country - have a well and septic tank - I don't have any water or sewer bill - if I ever wanted to change a toilet I would just do it - don't need a permit - next time I have to go I will appreciate how nice I have it - dump free Some how the government up there has almost full control of your lives - that ain't good - if I lived up there it would be way up north where the government isn't watching everything I do Speaking of toilets - remember this - no matter how you dance and prance - the last few drops go down your pants - JoePa
