  1. Most of the time if it has NF it means NON FISH it makes it easy to see that it will not be a fishing related item. Reading the title is another clue but sometimes people get cryptic so it is not as easy. If you accidentally get tricked into reading a NF story don't panic alot of times it will be as enjoyable as a fishing story especially if you have mete the people face to face at some point and you actually do care what they are doing in life. I think it is the Non Fishing stores that gives this site the SOUL that it has that allows people to laugh and cry together and help each other out when it is needed most. Just ask Maureen if Tyler wants it separated or the family that lost their house or Chuck when he was in the hospital with a broken neck and the many others that have shared the loss and the joys of new boats and loved ones. Yes I know you are asking for a separate place not a ban on these stories but it will mean just another place to click on and read and for the ones that do not read them we will lose your valuable views and input. 2. I got to agree with Tbay the only crime that I see is people are being over charged for a gun holder. It is not illegal to own and use firearms here in the states and if you have them legally then you are a law abiding citizen. If you have them illegally or use them in a manner that is illegal then you lose that right and possibly your life if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. I like the fact that criminals do not know if you have a gun it keeps the ones on the edge of stupidy from going over the line. For the record in 45 years I have not drawn or seen a gun drawn on an other person in real life but it seem to occure nightly on the T.V. Art

  14. the slime on the catfish will start a nasty infection. The whiskers are harmless but it is the fins that do the damage. They are ridgid and have barbs that really get the wound hurting. If you get stuck you can put some meat tenderizer that you use in the ktchen on the sting. You can then give it a good scrubbing with an anti bacterial soap to get the bad stuff out of the wound. As far as unhooking them you can use a lip grabber if it is over 5 lbs to hold them as you remove the hook. If you can control the fish with your hands then you will slide your hand up from below with your palm on his belly sliding the ridgid side fins between the thumb and pointer finger and the other between the pinky and the ring finger. Run your hand up till it has the fins touching the web of your fingers. Then with your thumb on one side of the head and the other 4 fingers on the other side of the head close your hand and grip the fish. If you would like take a picture of one of the bigger fish and need to hold them use a lip grabber or a pair of gloves to hold the fish by the lip and support the belly with your arms. Sliding your hand into the gill plate is almost a death sentence for the fish.Another way to hold the fish is a vertical hold and is ok for a photo if it is not held to long. If you let them go healthy you will catch them over and over for years to come. Art
  15. Well after counting all of the hooks and seeing that over half of them were dull I came up with an official count of 118 treble hooks. The exact winner is EC Milley for his guess of 118. The second winner was Slowpoke with his guess of 116. I would like to Thank you Jen and Pete for providing this prize for the Tyler Foundation last winter as a prize for the auction. The extra mile that your company goes for all of us fisherpeople is greatly appreciated. Ec Milley and Slowpoke check you P.M. box to receive your code for your $25.00 gift Certificates. Please note that they will expire on 12/31/2007 so shop quick and shop often. A final thanks to our fearless leader for permiting ME to have this contest on this site even if the lawyers did not get a chance to approve it.
  16. Go to the main page and check in the catagory called Hook ups you can see if someone near you wants a fishin partner. Art
  17. If you go to Ebay and type U.V. flashlight you will find quite a few for little money. I use it to show homeowners that the smell in the bathroom is from little Johnny missing the toilet. It makes it glow in all of the places that the homeowner has missed while cleaning. The blacklight bulb will give you a poor glow it does not put off alot of U.V. Art
  18. Looks like it is time to enroll someone into Sunday school. For a child to ask that question you might want to ask him what has happened to make him ask that question. It could be just something he heard as a passing reference or he might be struggling with a concept that he is not old enough to comprehend that he heard from an adult conversation. Most 5 year olds do not know what the concept of infinity is or care for that matter. Art
  19. My choice of places up their is Lak Air The cabins are nice and the boats are well maintained. You might bring a fishing buddy for depth and a electric motor w/battery. The food is awsome and the staff will make your trip memorable. The fishing is very good nearby with your choice of pike walleye muskie and small mouth bass in the area. For the run into town it is about 15 miles away so if you need something it is easy to get. You might consider 2 boats so you can fish different areas and meet up when you want to. less chance of hookin each other too. Good luck and have fun Art
  20. or you could have stayed home and cut the grass..... naw no fishis better than that. Art

  23. Thanks for the help clearing up my point. I was not trying to infer that it was the line that pulls the hook out of the mouth it is the instant reaction that does it. With a softer tip your rod does not react as fast just like the shock absorber. The spinning reel has it place don't get me wrong but to say you can out control a bait caster is incorrect it is not due to the user but the design of the way the reel unspools the line. Most people who use the bait caster and are prolific can cast the bait 6 inches off the water and drop it 2 inches from the shore from a boat. A spinner is usually cast side arm or overhead and is arched to the spot and even if you underhand the spinner you will still have too big of a disadvantage to be as consistent or as accurate as a bait caster. That said being comfortable with the equiptment you use is important and if the spinner works better for you then the spinner will always be the best equiptment in your hands. Art
  24. When you go out and buy a rod and reel don't look at the price until you have match the combo together and it feel like it is part of your hand then see if it is something you can afford... if not it is better to put it back till you can afford it then to buy something that is almost as good. It does not have to be the most expensive rod on the rack but you should stick with a name brand you are familiar with and a vendor that will warranty it if it is needed. I have around 25 rod and reel combos that are matched for different styles/sizes of the fish I am fishing for. The combos that I have all are just what I want because over the years I have given the ones I experimented with to people who are also looking for what they want in the perfect combo. Don't kid yourself if you buy a combo that does not feel good but is less expensive you will never resell it and reclaim your money. The other subject of line choices I have found that the speed of the tip and the stretch of the line is important to consider when you buy a rod. The sensitivity of todays fishing rods have made it so you can tell if your lure is dragging thru mud or gravel. It allows you to feel a fish inhale a rubber worm before he swims away even. Now with that we add to it a rod that has a fast action will set the hook with as little as 8 inches of movement. A line that has no stretch means that an 8 inch pull moves the hook 6 inches. Add all of this up and factor in youth's fast reaction time and hard concentration and you can pull the hook right out of the fishes mouth even before he bites. The good news is as you fish more and more you will subconsciously take these factors into consideration and naturally hook more and more fish with this technology. I have found that you can either use mono with a fast tip or change to a med fast tip and use the super lines with better success until you get past the learning curve of slowing down your reflex hook setting. The bigger the fish expected (heavier rod) the more I lean to a med speed tip with super line. The advantage of the med tip is it is more forgiving and you can use it dual purpose and troll with it. Yea you can also troll with a fast tip but most people prefer a slow tip so when you hook up the load is distributed along the whole length of the rod. A final note is don't buy a cheap baitcaster it will keep you from learning how to use them and will aggravate you to the point were you will not want one. The bait caster has many advantages over a spinning reel in certain conditions. The two that come to mind is line twist is eliminated and casting length can be adjusted in mid flight. Their are a few others that you will learn along the way but most of my spinning reels are used in open water fishing or by others who fish in my boat. Art
  25. For the record I would like to state that I would have been more than happy to hold Tom while Glen put the fuzzy cuffs on before we sent him outside wearing a gold and black Banana hammock, cape and calf high booties. As it was we ended up doing it to Roy but he would not complain and I think he liked it soo we quit and went back to drinkin shine......At least thats what I remember after drinkin shine with Glen.....
