Embarrassing/funny moments while fishing....
OhioFisherman replied to ccmtcanada's topic in General Discussion
Fishing a bass tournament at a southern Ohio lake, a cold blustery day in early April, a tough bite day. I was jigging a Heddon Sonar along a rocky ledge thinking it looked like a good spot for smallies. Bang! I get a hit, decent fish I said to my partner, then as I get it near the surface I see it is a 4-5 pound ski, in a hurry I lip it! Bad move! LOL Fishing with a buddy on one of Lake Erie's bays, make a long cast and sit down on my bow seat, a bass grabs it! I set the hook! and as I do the seat snaps off the pole at it's base. Over backwards I go! Lucky I didn't bust my dome on the gunnal, the last thing I saw on my way down was the bass jump and spit the hook. Up in Ontario for a couple of weeks, a Canadian couple was also there with their kids and not catching much, so I offered to take the husband fishing the next day and show him around a bit. Crack of dawn the next day we hit the water, enter a cove and a big sailboat is moored, just minding our own business fishing and we hear a female voice " catching anything" we both turned around and two bare naked ladies are standing on the back of the sailboat! Ah, scenery in Ontario! LOL Then things got ugly! Their bare naked dudes walked out! -
Years ago I read an article in a fishing magazine about the development of fish scents, as I recall it mentioned that research by Berkley indicated pike were partial to mackerel scent. http://www.in-fisherman.com/catfish/cut-mackerel-for-catfish/ http://www.users.totalise.co.uk/~robmurray/pikebaitsa.htm

It may have been his name, seemed like a great guy to me, that enjoyed his laughs! As I recall he moved to Pennsylvania to take a better job offer? -
Scary stuff on Walleye populations

You do have to wonder if the Phosphates are really gone? Or has the source of them simply changed? The water problems in Toledo Ohio this year seem to indicate the same old problem? Just a different source of it? Agricultural runoff is putting them back into the system, just as detergents did in the past? More agriculture to support a growing population and more runoff? It doesn't seem like the land gets a rest to replenish itself naturally, population growth doesn't allow for that, so the use of chemical fertilizers grows? -

LOL! Worlds greatest sports fish, and the guy that caught them moved to PA and I can't remember his name! A.K.A Rock bass! -
Obviously I know nothing about them, well except for the fact that it is a mistake to lip one! LOL It might help to understand why the Georgian Bay and St. Lawrence rivers produce monsters?

http://www.lakescientist.com/lake-facts/fish/muskellunge/ " Muskellunge BiologyMuskellunge and northern pike many times inhabit similar habitats, and research in Minnesota revealed a few interesting findings. Muskie, in the absence of northern pike, tend to reproduce in the same shallow, weedy areas that would normally be dominated by northern pike spawning during the spring. However, in the presence of northern pike the muskellunge tend to spawn in slightly deeper water, yielding the more preferred habitat to the northern pike. The presence or absence of northern pike also appears to impact ultimate growth of muskellunge. Muskie inhabiting waters without northern pike rarely reach total lengths of more than 40 inches, while muskie in the presence of northern pike occasionally surpass 60 inches. Muskie spawning generally occurs when water temperatures are in the 50s (°F), and a 40-pound female can produce about 200,000 eggs. Muskie larvae eat plankton after absorption of their yolk sac and soon switch to a diet of strictly fish. Peak feeding periods for muskellunge usually occur when water temperatures are in the mid-60s. "

Our do not call list down here in the states is a joke. All robo calls should be allowed to be blocked, as well as calls from our morons in Washington.

640 acres is a square mile, very small for a walleye lake. -
No, bent hooks, broken - bent snaps and steel leaders, and broken - cut lines.

I agree, is it any wonder that some lakes now seem to have constant stocking programs to maintain a population? -
LOL, it's tough being short?

Roast beef in sour cream sauce with potato dumplings, my grandmother and mom used to make roasters full of it. Slovak.

Steve Z and Mike Pettry run the place, I have known Mike since his birth, his dad Joe was my #1 fishing buddy and coworker from time to time. They used to go to the Lunge Lodge fishing since the 1970's. As I recall Steve and Mike had a background in the construction trade here before they took over the Lunge, I would imagine improvements continue as finances permit. Both regularly fished bass tournaments here, and I don't see either having any trouble at all adapting to other species. A couple of straight up guys, if you have questions just call and ask?

Many many years ago I saw one roaming the shoreline at Pointe Au Baril, the only one I have ever seen. Back in those days the camp owner would take all the oars out of his boats at night, something about the porcupines chewing the oar handles to get the salt from sweat? I was surprised to hear there were Fischers in some areas of Rhode Island.

My son and I usually answer phone numbers we don't recognize with screwed up/S and it's not fish under structure.

A lot of road driver for companies I worked for liked the Buffalo run, it was easy to go there and back in a day, at least in the summer! LOL Their stories convinced me not to try it during the late fall or winter.

I just watched some local news stations from that area, they could get hit with 8+ feet of snow by Friday? That would suck!

We got 3-5 inches here, it started early in the morning, our first recordable snow here, 15 miles or so north of us they have been dealing with it for a week or so.
