  1. They are actually kind of small, a cut off piece of concrete drainage pipe works better. Some construction companies have cutoffs laying around they will let you have for free or a few bucks. A 36 inch piece or bigger works best.
  2. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Shimano_Calcutta_TE_DC_Casting_Reels/descpage-SCTEDC.html " For the bass angler, this means you can reach places you've never reached before and more importantly, where no other angler has ever put a lure! It also means when you pull up on a point or flat you can be much more efficient and fan cast the entire area without ever moving the boat. It will also allow you to cast to spooky, shallow fish long before they ever know you're there. 5:1 gear ratio and an incredible 10 stainless steel A-RB bearings and one roller bearing makes this reel a dream to cast. For the ultimate casting experience the CalcuttaTE DC will take you places you've never been before and no other reel can match. "
  3. I am guessing that it is some kind of scam, I had them calling the house almost weekly about security issues on my computer and wanting me to go on line and give them access to fix the problems. Like that would happen! Dudes, what computer!
  4. I remember my brother going to Manistee Michigan a long time back and trying to fish for Salmon in the rivers there with Bass tackle, burnt drags and broken gears. Bass tackle isn't really design to fish for species that make long runs. " I can't imagine Calcutta having inferior drags than Tekota " that reel does mention " "A trollers dream — the Shimano Tekota is the perfect cross-over reel for both freshwater and saltwater species, from walleye to tuna." I am guessing a Tuna gives a bit better fight than a walleye? A reel that will handle Tuna is probably much more suitable for Salmon fishing.
  5. Nice catch! Yum, fish sticks!

  7. My experience on the French River has been limited to about 3-4 hours of fishing time. We were staying at Pointe Au Baril one summer and a very close friend and his family were staying at the Lunge Lodge, one of his kids is now part owner of it. We took a day away to visit and fish with them. They had been going there since the 70's, and seemed to have this notion that you weren't going to catch any largemouth of any size? I didn't seem to have the same problem, but I was fishing for largemouth in areas I thought they should be. I like topwater fishing, the explosions are cool! but it is not always the best way to go about catching largemouth or smallmouth. If I was to target smallies there? My first choice would probably be a tube in a bit deeper water than for largemouth, a smaller jig with pork or plastic, drop shot, a diving crankbait, a slow rolled spinnerbait in deeper water. If baitfish - shad are present? a white tube has worked well for me, some people don't bother to throw them. They have an annual fall bass tournament now for guests there, it is usually a tossup on which species of bass will take big bass.
  8. Yes I have seen them there also, tube size might be a factor? The ones on my pool brush pole were plastic and rust free.
  9. It came this morning and they used it this evening, said it works great! and they haven't broken it yet! LOL Just curious, is there a special type of steel pipe to use for a handle? I have two 8 pounders I might have it done to. I am thinking a little longer handle on them might make them more effective and if it's steel?
  10. Not personally, but my cousin hooked one accidentally years ago. It was legal to use perch for bait on the G/B up to the first impassible point. An old Canadian guy that lived down the road from the camp we were at showed us his pike bait, perch! The bigger the perch? The bigger the pike! I think he was frugal, why buy chubs suckers or minnows? You can even eat the leftovers! LOL You did have to pay attention and use a heavy enough amount of weight, or they would stay on or near the surface and attract the gulls.
  11. Brian, they are pretty common, I use a cane and walker, both have them on for height adjustment.
  12. What Terry showed, it seems to me that I have seen them in the odd parts and bolts and screws containers at Home Depot.
  13. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/wearing-life-jackets-should-be-mandatory-opp-1.948856 Did they actually ever change the law, or are they enforcing non existent ones?
  14. My brother had a tree service for a few years and I used to help him out, the monster maul worked great. Once he took on a really big job the did get a hydraulic log splitter, some pieces just seemed easier to split on the ground than lift on the splitter. Mom and dad had a spare garage 250 feet behind their home with a drive back to it. It became wood city, we had split wood on both sides of the drive back to it. We had better luck clearing an 8 acre ravine for a lake site than the guy did with the lake, his dam washed out the first year. I ordered one, it seems like the way to go, have to see if the boys can break it? LOL
  15. I would imagine it's a lot easier to write tickets on people less likely to travel a long distance to fight them? How many people will travel a long distance and spend more money on it than the cost of the ticket? They may just decide not to come back? That would be just great for the tourism industry?
  16. http://www.nitro.com/boat/ http://www.nitro.com/boat/specs.cfm?boat=3607 Nitro Z-6 17'4" max hp is 115, a 90hp should still push it fairly well.
  17. LOL sinker, I never had a problem splitting log sections, the kids are splitting slab wood. Ya guys, see the crazy mix of wood grain? That is a piece for your bonfires, don't waste your time or break things trying to split that!
  18. Well the Monster Maul had a steel handle and was 15lbs? A 38 inch handle for more leverage. Some of the cheaper steel handled ones I have seen only have a 30 inch handle, which seems to be an issue in a lot of the reviews. Pretty much indestructible and perhaps we have a lot more hardwoods down here than you do up there? My son and his buddy have been handling the wood splitting, they have already broken a wood and fiberglass handle. I don't think they have a good aim? Neither can cast worth crap either! LOL My splitting and casting days are over too! I am hoping a steel handled one would be more bulletproof for them to use.
  19. No clue, no Salmon in my area, but Steelhead weren't even an incidental catch until late September or October here on Lake Erie, unless you were trolling deep for suspended walleyes far offshore.
  20. Just curious, has anyone used one of these? http://www.hardwareworld.com/Licksplit-Maul-12-Lb-p7OAIAY.aspx My experience with wood splitting goes back some time, the good old days of the Sotz Monster Maul. Although that company was local they no longer seem to be in business, and finding an original Monster Maul is a rarity here even at garage sales or flea markets. Heck I even did it with wedges and a sledge hammer, kids these days seem to think it's a lot of work.
  21. LOL it's not a bad place to start? A few days after a tournament once the fish have calmed down? I doubt that smallies will hold in a shallow weedy area that is a release area for anywhere near as long as a largemouth would? I won a tournament on a lake in New York fishing for two days never more than a couple of thousand feet from the only resort-campground on the lake. They had 4-5 different bass clubs that would stay there and have tournaments over the season. Weigh in by their launching ramp and the best habitat for largemouth in that area, smallies almost always came from areas farther away with deeper water and rocky areas in them. A small lake though only 300 acres or so, doesn't take much time for a fish to find their comfort zone?

  23. I think being caught and held in a live well stresses them, I don't believe their first thought on being released is to head for home turf, that probably takes some time. I am guessing that a lot make it back to an area they were comfortable and familiar with.
