How deep is the water? a crawler or leech on a slip float and let it move with the current, you can use a small slip sinker or a couple of slip shot to get the bait down, you really just need enough flotation to support the weight. The float stopping where it shouldn't or moving in the wrong direction will indicate a hit.

Just from this side of the border? The war on pot has worked about as well as prohibition did, and if our government was so concerned about our safety? Why are Tobacco and Alcohol still legal? Some here call it a gateway drug? Perhaps because they saw Reefer Madness and knew the government lied? So they try other things to find out what else they lied about? I don't use it myself anymore, but did in the past, they should spend the time, money, and manpower to get rid of the really dangerous drugs out there? Here some states are looking at what a cash cow it has become for other states and rethinking their plans.

Can we pitch in and buy this guy a scale?
OhioFisherman replied to Dave Bailey's topic in General Discussion
On some waters here they need to be 15 inches to be legal, not sure that one would have made it. -
I was bass fishing at East Harbor off of Lake Erie with a friend, shallow water slop 0-4 feet and pretty clear for our area. Both of us were using 6 inch Zoom u tail worms, the only difference was color, I was using Junebug and he was using Watermelon blue fleck, he had 3-4 bass in the boat casting to the same spots and I didn't have a hit. Once that 3rd-4th bass hit the boat I changed to the color he was using and started catching bass, Junebug had been our go to color, but not that day? Hmmm... Lake Erie and other waters for bass or walleye, a chrome, gold, or white crankbait, cast or trolled has produced much better than any other color, up north mix in a perch finish. I had days where bass would absolutely tear up surface lures, but overall a stealthier lure was more consistent, a jig and pig, plastic worm - lizard - tube, even at night. Pike at night? grab a beer and deck of cards! Stay inside away from the skeeters! lol

Nice work! I especially like the style of the top two by singing dog! " What do you guys target with these jigs? " Largemouth, smallmouth, but anything that swims might eat one, I have caught walleye on them and hooked muskies on them, although not intentionally. Fish don't have trouble finding a small jig in the pitch black of night, a 1/8 ounce or 3/16th is fine as long as you have a decent hook in it for bass. A small pork frog or plastic on it and you're good to go!

Brutal winter-Will it affect the spring bite ?
OhioFisherman replied to knightfisher's topic in General Discussion
Here in the tropics it was -14 f when I woke up, the last day of February? Unless the spring heats up fast here we may have ice around the docks and marinas into April? Usually next month sometime (March) is the start of the spring walleye run up some of the rivers, and April is usually prime crappie time, that may get delayed a bit? We are currently at our 5th winter on record with days below zero f, there is more ice on the lakes and snow pack on the ground than normal, that usually means the water isn't going to warm up anytime soon? The county that I live in has the largest number of private ponds in the state, I suspect that winter fish kill will be a problem for a lot of them. http://ohioline.osu.edu/a-fact/0008.html -
Spinning Reel / Rod Set-Up for Bigger Fish
OhioFisherman replied to T-Bone's topic in General Discussion
Pete I think that involves rod selection? I have a couple of 6 foot one piece ugly stick spinning rods that I used up north, they are very stiff, the stiffest rods I own. -

If you are not looking to spend a ton of money on a rod? Take a look at some of the Ugly Stick rods? They make them for salt water use and for big cats, they should handle anything else? -

Whats your worst fishing accident
OhioFisherman replied to LostAnotherOne's topic in General Discussion
At a bass tournament, in a hurry, and I lipped a small muskie, I bled all day. -
I am right handed and learned on right handed baitcasters, I bought the first left handed baitcaster I saw, an Abu 5001c back in the 60's, it's been lefty's ever since. I will worry about tennis elbow if I ever decide to play tennis!

http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/the-lepto-vaccine-why-vets-give-it-yearly/ http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2102&aid=454 I have never even heard of that, I live in a rural area here, my dog get his normal shots. He has allergies and we had to change him over from oral heartworm medicine to one we apply to his back that also contains flea and tick killer.

It's been a long time since I went up north to Ontario, but even back in the 1960's your tackle prices were scary compared to prices here. At some of the smaller tackle shops here you also had the same problem though, sticker shock! I used to make an annual early spring trip with friends to Cabela's in Dundee and BPS in Auburn Hills, no complaints, but I knew what I was looking for and kept my purchases mostly limited to those items. Golden Nugget? Not a bad walleye lure, but the Erie Dearie was a lot more common in stores and tackle shops here along the lakefront, and usually cheaper! Overload? You also had the Storm Hot'n tot Pygmy spins and some others as I recall? Once you got 15 - 20 miles of the lakefront the tackle selections in some stores changed radically, it just wasn't profitable to stock tackle that didn't sell well in the area.

A bad day at the Bassmaster Classic
OhioFisherman replied to kickingfrog's topic in General Discussion
http://www.bassmaster.com/video/geico-bassmaster-classic-presented-gopro-basscam A very high percentage of larger lakes here in the states are man made, and the weather has been brutal for a lot of areas here. LOL in places like South Carolina or Georgia an inch of snow causes panic! Long pants and coats can go on if it drops below 70! -
LOL Adam! Popcorn shrimp? I know some towns - cities along this side of Lake Erie that would like to see something that eats some of the muckleheads and mayflies?

Don't cheap out on your snaps or swivels, get name brand items, make sure they are rated for at least the strength of the line. -

I remember when I first started driving 18 wheelers, no power steering, I thought I was getting arthritis in my shoulders, chest and upper arms, it just took a while to develop new muscles! Most of the tractors they used for city work were gas and way under powered, if you hit any kind of a grade you were breaking down the gears and hoping you didn't wind up in first! LOL, back in the day a 35hp outboard was a big motor!
