This is my dad and I out front of my brothers house on Scugog about 25 years ago. It's hard to tell from the picture but Dad's got a fish hook buried deep in his left thumb that he couldn't get out and he's just heading into the hospital to get it removed. It wasn't funny at the time but we laughed about it alot years later.

Really sad news Rick and sorry to hear it. Condolances from from my home to yours.

I've been retired goin on 11 years now and I'm still up every morning between 2 and 4 0'clock as it's definetely the nicest time of day. When I was working, the firehall I worked outta the last 25 years was only a mile from home yet I'd still hop on my bike about 3 A.M. and log anywhere from 10-30 miles before heading into work and I'd do that 12 months of the year, course when there was a foot of snow on the road I may not go quite as far.

For me personally, I have zero interest in ice fishing so this time of year I very seldom even look at a fishing report let alone reply to them. Nothing personal against anyone, it's just not something that gets my attention. As for posting fishing reports, I haven't put one up for about 3 years now mainly because I have no time for all the so called "musky experts" around here that like to disect everything and have far too many opinions for my liking, but that's just me. I enjoy alot of the non-fishing reports and find they fill in the void until the soft water season returns

Best of luck to ya Chris, you've been thru alot and hopefully this'll fix everything up like new.

I caught my 1st ever musky close to 40 years ago on a Beno Eel while fishing for pickeral. I don't use it anymore but I've still got it tucked away in a tackle box around here somewhere. Seems to me it's green with spots on it. Used to catch alot of fish with an orange one too.

Thirty odd years ago my brother was driving along the 401 near Belleville in a red Ford van when 3 police cruisers came up behind him, boxed him in and forced him outta the truck at gun point. After they did some checks they realised they had the wrong guy but apologized and explained that there had just been an armed robbery and the punk with the gun had taken off in a red Ford van exactly like my brother was driving. My brother accepted their apology and thanked the coppers for doing a tough job and went on about his business. Back in 1963 there was a big fight between 2 biker gangs in front of Scarboro arena in Scarboro. There were a couple dozen bikers trying to kill each other and just a handful of cops trying to arrest them. I was driving by and foolishly stopped to watch, got too close to the fight and was grabbed by the cops, handcuffed along with a bunch of bikers, tossed in the paddy wagon and spent the weekend in the old Don Jail before everything got straightened out. I received apologies from the Toronto Police Dept and the Chief of Police. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and in all the confusion I got grabbed but the police were very fast to set things straight when the mistake was figured out. As for the dispute in this post, I'd much rather see a cop pull his gun when it's not needed than see a cop murdered because he didn't have his gun out. They've got a tough job to do and it's getting tougher everyday. But that's just my opinion

Beautiful '64 GTO your Pop drives around in Art. I had a '65 Parisienne (Bonneville) ragtop back in the day and would give darned near anything to have it back today.

I just remembered another governmemt screw-up involving a new boat purchase. I bought a new boat in 1999 and payed cash for it including all taxes and licensing and went on my way. Two years later I got a letter from the government...can't remember which one....wanting a copy of my bill of sale to prove I'd payed all my sales tax on the boat. Not a big problem so I sent them the photocopy showing everything was payed in full. Couple years later I got another letter from them requesting the same thing again, so I sent them yet another photocopy showing I didn't owe them anything. Well they say things happen in three's and sure enuff, I get yet another letter from these characters wanting proof for the 3rd time that taxes were payed. I totally ignored the final demand and never heard from them again, so perhaps I should have ignored the other letters too. I still have my original bill of sale though just incase they decide to harrass me again for the taxes. It really is sad.

Satellite radio ( for vehicle and or cottage)

Same thing for me Chris, the new truck came with Sirius free for 6 months and I liked it so I continued the subscription. For around 40 or 50 cents a day for the music I like it's pretty cheap entertainment. It's usually 50's rock and when I want a laff it's Blue Collar Radio. Very nice not having to listen to commercials 1/2 the time. -
Sure hope 2011 goes out better than it came in.

Really sorry to hear the news Brian, it's one of the toughest things a person ever goes thru & you've sure got my sympathies. My little buddy Marvin turned 14 last October and it's something I think about every day. -
You've got me figured out pretty good Brian and I guess I can't disagree with you. It sure is nice flying across the lake at crazy speeds while we're picking out our spots on the GPS as were listening to Sirius radio and thinking about which too expensive rod and reel combo to use when the sonar shows us where all the fish are sitting. I often wonder though, if fishing wasn't actually more fun, or relaxing, back before we had all the fast boats and very expensive gear & gizmos to go along with it. Fishing today is still fun but I think we're sometimes too pre-occupied with our toys, our speed, and out Jonesing everybody we know and we forget what it's really all about. ....or maybe I just spend too much time thinking about the good ole days

I use 130# Seagar fluoro for muskies because it doesn't kink like wire leaders. I used wire for years and the best I ever found were Stringeze, but they would often kink when a musky thrashed and at around $6.00 each it would get expensive, cause once a wire leader is kinked I won't use it again. If you have a good day and catch several fish and each one ruins a leader it gets kinda spendy. I think the softer fluoro is easier on a musky too when she rolls in the line as it doesn't cut into the flesh the way wire does sometimes. Thats just my opinion though....

Great post Garry and it makes me wonder how we ever managed back in the day when we only owned one rod but used it to catch everything from perch to musky and nobody had even heard of spinning reels yet

When I bought the new boat in '09 I went to the licensing office to transfer the license plate from the old trailer to the new one and the clerk couldn't find any record of my plate on her computer. She asked me where it was and I told her I'd had it for years and it was still on my old trailer. She told me to have a seat and she'd check the system further. She called me back up about 30 minutes later to tell me she'd finally located a record of my plate but it had been "removed from the system" 5 years earlier and was no longer valid but she had absolutely no idea why a perfectly valid license plate would be wiped out, or why I was never notified about it. I asked her what would have happened if I'd been stopped by the police and they found out my license plate didn't really exist and she said "I dunno, I spose you woulda been in trouble " I had to purchase a new plate for my trailer and was told to destroy the old plate. I asked her how I should destroy something that doesn't exist and was given another "I dunno" It's really sad when such seemingly simple tasks are made to seem so difficult.

Sad news Phil and I'm really sorry for your loss, I know how close you & Paul were to your Dad and you payed him a very nice tribute here. I can't say I ever knew your Dad but we were on the job together for around 3 decades so there's always the possibility we worked together without knowing it. Good to hear the Fire Dept. honoured him like they did. Condolances from my family to yours Phil
