  1. I guess you weren't around in the 60's to 80's maybe. It was common to haul a boat around on the top of a 22 foot or so long ( name any of the Big 3) family car. I went halves with a buddy on an old Sears 12" Cartopper in the early 80's. The 4 HP Elgin motor fit in the back seat. I think the Elgin was sold by Eatons. They must have sold them too. You could buy a boat and motor from the catalogues. Dad's 1960 Chevy Impala station wagon fit 9 adults or 13 with 5 kids in the rear facing back seat, we all wanted the back seat. Open the back window and hang out as far as you could without falling out, and no seatbelts. I was going to say no one died but that's not true, some little kids did fall out. Mr. Falwell could take our entire line up and his wife to games.
  2. I have a theory as far as navigating goes. If I didn't hit anything on the way out and I follow my track line to the T on the way back I won't hit anything coming back in, usually. Oh and I have never even gone 3/4 throttle on Stoney, that includes the old 9.9 with the tilt pin out.
  3. If you don't know Stoney or don't have the best E maps bring an extra prop. I have fished it many times up towards Burley Falls. There are plenty of Walleye there which we fished for. We would troll our go to spots to find the fish then drifting with a simple jig and minnow was our ticket to success. Get as vertical as possible. No exact depth day to day. Clear Lake off of Stoney is good too.
  4. Bang on Big Cliff. We have been on the water here on Erie full time for 20 years. That includes 20 years of winters. I can't explain the difference between living in town and living on a lake. We too are looking now close to the lake, near a marina but not smack dab on the shoreline. Big Cliff look at properties in Chatham Kent. South western On. You won't believe what you can get there for under 300K. A nice property for under 200K. I think it's about 45 mins to Windsor and an hour or so to London. You must check it out. Purple Bricks.com. What's up with this italics? No big deal.
  5. Jimmer go to the website iboats.com. There is a myriad of good people there to help you do it yourself, step by step by step. I have been a member there for about 10 years now and have saved big bucks listening to these guys when I had a problem. At any given time there can be 10,000 members and 100,000 guests on that site, yep one hundred thousand. If the members don't know the answer to a problem there is not an answer, yet. They have threads on anything boating, and may be specific to the make and model of a boat from canoes to Yachts. I can't give you any better advice but to ask there. This a fantastic site but for boats go to iboats.com. Good luck. iboats.com.
  6. 10 years for murder. Off to a half way house in maybe 4. That says it all right there. Even though I don't see incarceration as a deterrent to crime murdering another human being must result in a lifetime locked away to keep that murderer from doing it again. But if you are going to be a criminal be a criminal in Canada. You get 10 years for unpaid parking tickets in California and 25 to life for possession and distribution of a pound of weed in many states. Many years ago a real deal wiseguy from Youngstown Ohio told me he knew crews that were robbing jewelry stores and banks in the 70's up to 2000 in Windsor, Niagara Falls and Montreal because the chance of doing hard time if convicted was slim to none here in Canada. There was a CBC report on TV years ago that had interviewed 4 Americans from Detroit that were incarcerated in Worksworth Pen. If I recall correctly a short sentence for robbery and drug trafficking. They were in what was basically a 2 bedroom condo complete with color TV, stereo, outdoor patio and a BBQ. They all said it was the nicest place they had ever lived in their entire lives. Growing up they shared 2 bedrooms in squalor with up to10 brothers and sisters in Detroit, if they had a place squatting and weren't split up amongst family for a small fee, if they could pay. If they were lucky they weren't the ones living out of an abandoned mini van when they couldn't find a place to squat.
  7. The simple answer to the question is YES. We have the same problems here as you do in the States. From small towns to big cities. Remember we only have close to 40 million citizens here while you have close to 400 million. So you may have more addicts than we have people. But prorated the problem is just as bad, unfortunately. If someone here says their city or little county, town, village or hamlet doesn't have a drug problem they don't get out much or have their heads buried in the sand or up their arses. It has effected everyone from the teens experimenting to your 75 year old Aunt Milly who has been hooked on Opiates for years since she had that hip replacement and her Doc was handing her out Oxy's like candy on Halloween. My crystal ball tells me this thread will be locked soon.
  8. Al Linder was my fishing Guru back in the day. And yes smitty the Lindy systems apply today, why not? We were using a Lindy Rig with floating Jig Heads for big Walters here on Erie for years when everyone else is trolling and getting bored out of their minds. Especially when lock jaw Pics are holding bottom. I was bored to death trolling, trolling and more trolling. I said tomorrow I am going to get vertical and bounce bottom and the boys thought I was nuts until I kept telling them on the VHF "another one in the box byes."
  9. JVC, Japan Victor Company. Made in China? Paid 900 bucks for that thing. I actually still have it. I think an episode of Babe Winkleman is stuck in it.
  10. It's a big world out there and with cash in your pocket unlimited possibilities. There are a few year round trailer parks in Haldimand County. But that's southern Ontario not northern. I knew a fella that was living on one after a recent divorce, in the dead of winter it was a chore just to keep the water supply from freezing as well as getting in and out. Buy a big RV bus summers up north and winters down south. Then you aren't stuck in one location that you paid big bucks for and find it isn't for you.
  11. Location, population, presentation. L.P.P. You must fish where there are fish, a large population of those fish make fishing less "luck" driven. You need to feed the fish what they want if you are going to catch them. Location: As Huzzaba said you aren't fishing in locations that have high populations of fish, especially in the dead of Summer. Fish want colder water and the shorelines don't hold many fish this time of year. The closer you are fishing to big cities the population of fish are scarcer. I got the bug and pounded the shoreline of Lake Ontario for years until I had enough vacation time to head north. I don't think I caught a single fish from shore on Lake Ontario, ever. My 1st Salmon was from a boat in deep water Captained by a Pro guide on Lake Ontario. There are plenty of fish within 2 to 3 hours of the GTA. Lakes Skugog, Simcoe and The Bay of Quinte to name just a few. You have a huge advantage with a Dingy, it is shore fishing as you won't dare to venture too far out into lakes. Population: The best shore fishing in southern Ontario is from the shore of Lake Erie. Perch, Smallmouth Bass, Sheephead and even some Walleye in the evenings. Presentation: That's the tough decisions that experience plays a huge part. Live bait will put fish on the hook more often than hardware. Don't cheap out on Rod and Reels and tackle. There is nothing more frustrating for a novice than to use a cheap rod and reel combo, line and cheap Chinese tackle like sold at Canadian Tire. Never use a Red and White plastic bobber, they shouldn't even be sold. There wasn't a fishing show on TV that I didn't tape on the old VCR or a fishing magazine or book I didn't buy to learn from. The tips in the books and magazines from the 70's hold true today. But getting on the water as often as possible is the key to success. Be safe in that little Dingy, PFD's on at all times. I am told all the time "life jackets (PFD's) aren't comfortable," coffins however are. Keep at er' and good luck. Johnny D
  12. Thanks Doug. Not ready yet, too busy getting this shack reno's done. 7 week reno on month 13 now!!!
  13. Glad it all worked out. If it was me bringing fish, which is meat, into a country I would be on the TV show Bad Trips Abroad. I've asked the customs guy at the US border about bringing in cured meats into the US. I have heard both yes and no. I am not a big fan of smoked meats, fish yes for some reason. A friend gave me a good sized piece of home smoked Bacon. Had it this morning, it was the best Bacon I have ever had in my life. It was so good I am thinking of buying a small smoker. When I'm ready to pull the trigger I will be asking here which one?
  14. Thanks guys. Tungsten steel won't kill you unless shot from a gun. We made all manner of weights pouring molten lead into molds, I still have plastic tubs full of them somewhere. We did however wear Comfo 2 respirators with the appropriate filters when we did it courtesy of Stelco. The lead I bought, not worth loosing a job over a few bucks of lead.
  15. Bienvenue Derek. I think that might be welcome in French, I didn't pass French, ever. Hope you do well, good luck. The harder you work the luckier you get. Fishing weights must have come a long way since I used steel nuts as weights. OK guys, why Tungsten over steel etc.? Lead I know why not. I don't know how many years it's been since I bought fishing weights. That's not true, sorry, I bought some jigs from our Big Ugly at the Hamertown swap meet a few years ago.
  16. W5, ask, who, what, when, where and why and you will always get better answers.
  17. Same boat here. Always his work is neater than the Pro's. I've set up this thread so my wife can't see it. Akri you are right, the lakeshore of Erie and other Great Lakes was a mess this spring. The shoreline erosion is big news everywhere. Large chunks of ice the size of VW's bent super duty steel stairways and railings on breakwalls 15 feet above the new lake level. The shoreline restoration contractors out here are booked for the next 2 years. A great profession for some younger folks to get into. If lake levels stay as is, and the scientists say it wont be changing for the foreseeable future actually some say for a generation, shoreline restoration and protection will last someone enough work for a lifetime. Cost me over 5 grand last summer to repair and bolster our breakwall, and I got a deal because I pulled both permits. A $1500.00 savings.
  18. Fantastic day you had there. Good video. We live on the lakeshore of Erie. The smaller ones, 12 to 16" or so seem to be in close all summer, all day sometimes. We call them greenies and if you ever considered eating Smallmouth those are the ones to eat. And when they are active they will hit anything that moves. My favorite for them is a smaller Mepps Black Fury or a 3" Pinns Minnow bait. They aren't all small either, the bigger Moma's will chase bait towards the shore in the evening just before dusk. When they are hitting we have a 30 cast contest, my Buddy Groundy holds the record, 30 casts/25 hits and 22 Smallies landed, and not all greenies. Tell me that ain't fun. Make sure you wash well after you are walking in that water. I got a bad infection like Athletes Foot that lasted a week or more and hurt like a sonavagun. Also got an ear infection from snorkelling in the lake so bad it ruptured an eardrum. The side of my face was swollen like I went a few rounds with Iron Mike. That was really bad.
  19. Excellent analogy Akri. I'm exactly 57 pounds lighter than I was when in my 20's but playing ball and training up to 6 days a week. It was a chore carrying all that weight. Jimmer and Reef Runner, very well said.
  20. I got very sick one year eating shrooms that I shouldn't have. Like someone inserted vice grips in your gut and kept twisting it. Now when someone points out wild mushrooms here we should pick I tell them to go ahead and eat them, if you are still alive in the AM I might have some too.
  21. When we used to snorkel and SCUBA dive we would watch a live minnow that buddy tossed into the drink. A Walleye would take the minnow by the tail, hold it in their mouths for a few seconds, spit it out along with some scales then turn and hit it hard head 1st. Not always but often. I think its the same for Bass, stun the bait so it's easier for the Bass to eat it thus using less energy chasing a healthy prey, like a frog.
  22. Are Musky an endangered species? We seem to hold them in a higher status than others for some reason, including myself. All fish should be respected including the ones that give us nourishment.
  23. I was tooling around here yesterday and had Jerry Agar CBC radio on. The subject was the price of weed, legal and illegal. Many folks that know the prices all said illegal weed is 1/2 or less the price of the legal stuff. The gov would have us believe all the illegal stuff is laced with Fentanyl and other deadly substances. I don't smoke but if I did I certainly wouldn't be paying double. There are enough home growers I know that don't lace the stuff.
