I'm going to ask why Carrots Smitty? Being a root veg. they can stay most of the Fall and Winter in a cool, dark, dry place with doing nothing to them. I don't jar anything but I do know it is a ton of work watching Mom years ago. I never have canned anything other than roasted Red Shepperd Peppers and then froze them in bags. Just wondering.

Took you until noon Gino? You guys must have gotten out late. LTM. I actually got in a boat last week and we went out of Nanticoke. Ran out to 50 feet of water, lines in the water at 8. 3 man limit and in by 11:00. It was ridiculous. That's a keeper fish every 8 minutes. Good going Gino. Some of those you have are the best eaters. Averaged about 3.5 lbs.

Did a dry rub for pork back ribs and I have to say they were perty darned good. Yeaterday afternoon I gave them a rub of EVO, then a rub of Mont. Steak Spice, Sweet Hungarian Paprika, dry oregano, garlic powder, dry basil, chili powder all on both sides. Put in a baking dish cut in 1/2. Soaked them in Worcestershire and a few good shots of Pres. Choice Aged Cayenne (1st try of this stuff*). Then I poured enough Coca Cola (the one with sugar) to cover the ribs about 1/4 of the way up because that's how much Coke I had. Covered and marinated overnight. This afternoon I covered them in a tin foil tent and cooked for 3 hours at 295F. Took them out to cool on the counter in the juice. Fired up the Q, just before I put them on I flipped them into the left over juices just to wet them. Put them on the Q on high serving side down. Did not close lid. Latticed the ribs and finished bottom down. They ended up with a nice bark on the outside and moist inside. Not falling off the bone which ribs really shouldn't be but the bone slid out easily. They had a hint of heat at the back of your pallet but not hot at all. A baked tater and a cob of local Peaches and Cream picked this morning. They were good. Better than I can get anywhere else at least, including down south I don't enjoy dripping wet ribs that are drowned in spiced up ketchup. I think you all know what a plate of ribs look like. The Presidents Choice Cayenne is pretty good. Not vinegar based sauce like Franks. It is spicy not hot unless you really pour it on.

Old Yamaha 30hp tuneup - buy parts online?
Old Ironmaker replied to Raycaster's topic in General Discussion
There isn't much one can buy for 13 bucks. That includes a Big Mac meal! Not that I would ever eat 1, more than once a month unless I'm jammed up you know where. -
Without ever seeing a side mount putt, putt on a canoe it just doesn't look stable in my mind, yes especially a 60lb unit. Heck I had enough of a challenge paddling a canoe and keeping dry with just the 2 of us in it. OP what about a good hi output electric. 100 lb thrust might do it again depending on the rapids. I see this is your 1st post. Welcome aboard if you are still here.

How long do you fish the lily pads
Old Ironmaker replied to bigcreekdad's topic in General Discussion
Right until the end of Sept depending on the water temps. You can see them dying off just like the stuff in the flower gardens in Fall. Or until I caught them all. Love fishing slop for Largemouth, mostly done in Florida, not much die off but there is some even there. Have even caught the odd Walleye under the pads in Fall here. It's been a while, I miss that style of fishing, flipping the slop too. You should try that while you are there. -
Wouldn't outriggers on a canoe be very vulnerable to damage running over and between rocks in fast water Dave? I know there were many spots the 12 and 14 footers just fit between, just. I would think if I had an outrigger on a canoe it would be hitting surface rocks steady. But I'm picturing the Ottawa not babbling brooks that I know guys call rapids up north and freak over.

30 year old fuel filter, I would freak if I don't change them every 2 years. But good for you. Takes a few minutes to change 1 and they are cheap compared to the job they do, even from the Marina. A reason I will pay a few bucks, and it's not that much more for 6 plugs (mine anyway) a fuel filter etc. is I can ask them for a nice print out of everything I ever purchased there. Sure is impressive to show an interested buyer someday. As far as fluids, I will get Merc fluids where ever it is on sale. Then I buy a gallon of 2 stroke, even 2 not a few quarts. Quicksilver gear oil as well, on sale. There is a crazy range for plugs, Ted has a 91' 90HP Mariner, his plugs are double what mine are, I can't remember exactly but the plugs for my 94' 115HP Mariner are 1/2 that price. I have a buddy that takes my old plugs. Be my guest. -
I like this one. After the Great Britain Beer Festival, in London, all the brewery presidents decided to go out for a beer. The guy from Corona sits down and says, “Hey Senor, I would like the world’s best beer, a Corona.” The bartender dusts off a bottle from the shelf and gives it to him. The guy from Budweiser says, “I’d like the best beer in the world, give me ‘The King Of Beers’, a Budweiser.” The bartender gives him one. The guy from Coors says, “I’d like the only beer made with Rocky Mountain spring water, give me a Coors.” He gets it. The guy from Guinness sits down and says, “Give me a Coke.” The bartender is a little taken aback, but gives him what he ordered. The other brewery presidents look over at him and ask “Why aren’t you drinking a Guinness?” and the Guinness president replies, “Well, I figured if you guys aren’t drinking beer, neither would I.”

Haaaaa! Going to the other website, thanks. It's a US site, they don't know what a Newfie is, I better be careful. Maybe an Oki from Muskoki?

We had a camp on The Ottawa river and ran rapids regularly in 12' tinnies and 9.9's. All fast water is not created equally. Whether or not that 2HP will move the canoe upriver will depend on how fast the river is in various sections. We would learn where the "slower" water was and run those areas depending on weight. So even if you know the total weight you would have to know GPM of water flow you are travelling into to determine thrust required. I wouldn't want to run rapids in a canoe without a transom mounted engine largely due to balance, no everything to do with balance including bow ballast.

I'm happy for you Big Guy, enjoy.

carp fishing kawartha lakes/London area.
Old Ironmaker replied to Harrybsfc's topic in General Discussion
You are coming to the right place my friend. I know you are going to have a blast here Carp fishing. I once had a business trip to the UK one June. I paid some Estate Agents to use their PC's. Talking I found out they were Carp guys. I showed them some pics on my phone of the 20 pounders we catch right where we live. They booked a trip to Ontario just to fish Carp. I know you Carpers are some serious fishermen with the detailed set up's you use. I think you can be very successful on just a good spinning rod and reel. A good one with plenty of line for those 20 pound of muscle line peels. Maybe some of the guys here that have fished the areas they mention they might give you advice for a good Carp set up. Good luck man and welcome. -

I hear you Raycaster, my jean pockets can get tight, often. But after 50 plus years of burning up any and all combustion engines ever made I might have learned my lesson. "Pay me now or pay me later." I was about 10 when I put straight gas in my fathers new to him home made 2 stroke lawnmower, I wasn't supposed to touch it. I could run but he eventually caught me. It was a neat machine. He and my Uncle converted an old push mower and put a chainsaw motor on the frame somehow. -

Trolling a casting rod in a Salty s-10
Old Ironmaker replied to Reef Runner's topic in General Discussion
I don't know what a Salty S-10 looks like. I once cut slits in a Scottie for the exact same reason. I could use the pistol grip rods as well as spinning rods in the Scottie. In my mind I think I have seen holders with slots already cut into them for sale somewhere. When we were trolling for PIcs out of our little tinny my rod holder was usually my left hand. I always wanted to feel the line and rod tap. But it was nice to have something to hold it when I was doing something else. Trolling on the Great Lakes is different. Hard to hold 2 rods and run the boat. I've seen buddy hold 2 rods trolling for Smallies on Lake Erie though. The nut. That tight lock rod holder looks to be your $$ answer Reef. -
It made the rounds today. My wife told me she got some giggles at work this afternoon. One reason I like joke of the day is I can never remember a good joke. Nothing worse than wasting peoples time telling a joke and you can't remember the punch line. It's exactly how you feel if you are on stage and can't remember your line. But if I read it in the morning I can remember it for a few hours anyway.

Cheap tie down ratchet straps rated for a few hundred pounds from Princess Auto. I see it all the time and just shake my head. When I had a slip at the marina I would see guys with cheap straps used as tie downs all the time. I mentioned it to a few guys, some were thankful but most basically told me to mind my own business of which I now do. I've even seen ropes with nice little knots in them. Some boats didn't even have that. Oh that's what those things are for?

If Yamaha says use 7HS then use 7HS. When did CTC have Marine mechanics behind the tire counter? Go to Bay City Marine on the mountain on Hester St. I can't believe how many guys want to cheap out for a few plugs. Not saying you are but there are many. Same goes for fuel. Nothing but Hi Test goes in my marine engines, car and truck reg. is fine for me. When I get my hi performance classic, the best only. -
Old Yamaha 30hp tuneup - buy parts online?
Old Ironmaker replied to Raycaster's topic in General Discussion
I always get my boat/engine parts locally, actually everything I need. It both supports local business and one can develop relationships with the retailer. I won't shop online, my wife does. Call me old fashion. Plus I know guys that thought they were saving money buying online only to be sent the wrong part that can't be returned or a Chinese knock off that is crappola. If she's running fine and don't have any leaks I would service it at the end of the season, coming faster everyday. As far as a milky bottom end gear oil I once scared the beegeezus out of myself when I found milky oil in the bottom end. No metal shavings on the magnetic screw thankfully. Then I remembered the last time I changed it I had run out of one brand of gear oil and used a different brand to top it up. That was it. -
On the 1st pic just left of the rods line above the horizon I see a Salmon jumping. The next 3 pics are wonderful. That cloud formation sure looks like a Tornado formation. I would have not taken the time to take it until I got me arse off the water. Fantastic photos Brian. There are hundreds of thousands, millions I should say smart phone users that never knew they had an eye for photography until the technology was available. In the old days you bought a roll of 36, took them, paid 50 cents or more to develop only to find 10 or more were duds. Today one can take 1000 pics and with a flick of a finger delete 999 basically for free. Now anyone can be a pro. Just ask my niece who is a pro photographer with 5 years of post secondary education for it under her belt. She does amazing work. She gives tours at a Niagara Winery to pay the bills. 60 years ago professional photographers had to have a 1st job to survive, nothing has changed much.

My joke of the day. Or at least I borrowed it. A man went to the doctor’s. The doctor came in and said, “Well, I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that you have an inoperable brain tumor. The good news is our hospital has just been certified to do brain transplants and there has been an accident right out front and a young couple was killed and you can have whichever brain you’d like. The man’s brain costs $100,000.00 and the woman’s brain costs “30,000.00.” The patient could not help but ask, “Why such a large difference between the male and the female brain?” The doctor replied, “The female brain is used.

Looks great Brian. I am not a lover of smoked meat. I do like it but not on a regular basis. I once bought a medium size Shunka (sic), a Croatian smoked prosciutto. I liked it but it lasted almost a year. I know guys from the plant that ate smoked something everyday. Smoked fish is my favorite smoked meat. As far as butt chops they are far tastier to me than loin, more fat means more flavour more moisture, I kill myself over a hot Q or stove to keep the meat moist without adding water, wine yes, even Beer, learned that in Belgium they cook everything in Beer, why not, I do.. I really like butt chops on the Q. I marinate them in different flavours overnight or even only a few hours. Sometimes Mexican style with a mole sauce or red pepper sauce, Italian style just EVO and dry garlic, rosemary a whole fresh sprig to use as a BBQ brush dipped in garlic, oregano and basil. I've never heard of BBQing something after being smoked. Is this a common thing to do? I would like to try a portion of smoked pork shoulder or butt roast. I like pork butt over loin or rib chops, much more flavour and hard to overcook. Nothing worse than ruining a pork loin chop that is as dry as a 2X4. Easily done. My wife is famous for it and I dare not say a thing. She was brought up thinking pink pork will kill you, it can't. When I had a garden the critters didn't feast on I planted varieties of purple garlic. French garlic to me is best. A well toasted clove can be eaten whole. Ask Big Ugly about planting garlic and varieties, he knows his garlic he does.

I have learned enough about batteries to write a book. My best advice, never let them go below 20%. Most batteries have a limited number of charges from dead or less than 20%. The number of discharges determines the cost of the battery. Also when buying a new batteries manufacture date. Retailers will always flog the oldest batteries they have. Like buying milk. I put the receipt in a good Ziplock freezer bag and duct tape it to the side of the battery. I can never find receipts for returns. I do it with most stuff I buy, my wife has receipts going back 26 years.
