The go to weapons back in the 80's and 90's were Shad Raps for trolling and casting, and a black leech plastic or pig rinds on a floating orange jig and Lindy rig for drifting. Fall longlining on side planners, downriggers, Dipsy's now seems to be the same basic minnow baits we use on Erie in the summer. Larger Bombers, Rappala, Reef runners, Ripplin Red Fins and all those that Mike mentions above. Also teamed with worm harnesses on the set ups. This year I want to try the Greasy Chicken, Monkey Puke, Orange Crush spoons tipped with worm. If all goes according to plan we should be there the end of the month. Back in the day if you didn't have a leader of Japanese made Zero mono tied on you went fishless. I believe a very invisible fluorocarbon will do the trick in the crystal clear water of the bay. We are going to hit the local tackle shops before heading out. Whatever they are out of stock of is what we will use, hope we have some. That is something we always do before we get to camp, and hit the ballet. Being 25 years older the ballet tradition may be broken, I don't even know if these bastions of cultural entertainment still exist between Trenton and Nappanee. Between the 3 of us and many thousands of dollars worth of weaponry I hope we have some. I've never caught a Walleye there on a spinnerbait or Senko msp. Maybe I should try it, crazy enough to work. I'm assuming we're talking Walleye here, aren't we.

Nice boat Lew, I'm happy for you. Looked at a few over the weekend, I'm having a flash back to when I was looking for the boat I have now, it took months. I'll find it. Unlike you Lew, I don't want to trailer it. I have found the marina I would dock it in and it's not cheap, it is cheaper than most of the trailer parks around here. Thanks all......

Is fishing trout beads essentially flossing/snagging?
Old Ironmaker replied to Jarfish's topic in General Discussion
You angle for a fish, the fish is hooked by the pointy part of the hook in the mouth, you didn't snag it, net it, bang it off the noggin with a weight, use a CIL wabbler or run it over with your boat motor, it's called catching a fish. You can tell the soft water season is soon coming to a close. We are talking non issues in my humble opinion. If you can categorically tell how a fish took a hook post mortem without witnessing it, you are good, really good. -
If that's Keselowski's beer I hope it was after he drove. How much did he pay you for your autograph?

What I really love about this forum and the other I frequent, Stomps Long Point, everyone that is able is willing to help. It's great in these me, me, me times we live in.

You have to have the fastest tinny in the world. What's on there a 200hp Merc. All kidding aside it looks like you had a lot of fun, and talking to yourself. Good going keep em coming. Where in the UK are you from?

I'm thinking about selling my fishing rig and getting into something much larger and gently used, probably something with all the bells and whistles maybe even an aft cabin. 28' plus. I was thinking seriously about a nice cuddy but for a few bucks more you can get into something much larger. It looks like it's the first 25' that costs you. There sure are many deals out there compared to 8 years ago. Many, many reasons I may make this move. I know many here have boats and was wondering if there is a good boating forum that I will learn from before I spend some hard earned money and make a lifestyle change. I will have to sell our waterfront property to do so probably unless I spend less than 30K. We've been thinking about moving inland as these winters on the water are getting to me, big time. We've been lucky these past few winters but normally we never know if we can get out after a storm. We have a place south I rent out for the year as the wife still works full time, if it's something she can do were looking at staying the summers and fall on the boat then going south when she decides to retire in no less than 8 years. No sense going from one waterfront deck to go to a different one for the day or weekend. I have friends over the years that got into it and lasted 2 seasons, some after 30 years are still there. Anyone done the same thing? Thoughts? Thanks Johnny D

Please for the non salmonoid hunters, what is "flossing"? I've Googled and Binged it, zero fishing related hits. Always need to learn something new every day. Thanks JD -
That's fantastic Ketchenany. My wife works at a place where they have to ask for contributions regularly, they hate it with a passion. Rich Jamaica is very expensive to live. A body Guard in Kingston is $200.00 a day. I kid you not. Now the D.R. that's another thing. My wife's sister is a nurse that went to Haiti with Doctors without borders, I'll ask her why so cheap. I would suspect our charitable donations cover 99% of the cost. She was paid her salary and expenses when she went after the earthquake.

Very nice, yea where's the credit, and the money. With all this instant communication we have today a lost occupation is photo journalist. Do they give anything for great pics like that? A tee shirt at least. That fire looked like a Douzy. The last time I was in Barrie the tallest building was a church.

Man, what can you say? Wow comes to mind. I wasn't going to do what I was supposed to do today because I'm a bit sore, I'm heading out now because if he can do all that I can do a few very trivial chores. Inspirational to say the least. Thanks Lew for the link.

Fire starters for emergency if needed. Do you carry anything?
Old Ironmaker replied to npt1's topic in General Discussion
That's nuts. I love it. Maybe next is a survival show with more than 1 ex wife for 28 days. How about a show where everyone is a multiple amputee. Please no cards or letters. It's a joke. -
question for those who have had knee surgery
Old Ironmaker replied to muskymatt's topic in General Discussion
Tore my knee up way back in 78', no not 1878. Back then it was a week in the hospital for a torn MCL and lateral meniscus. The pain is going to be bad the first 2 days for a scope, you should have no major pain and be walking on it with no pain a few days after that. It was a cast for 8 weeks back in ancient times for a mcl and meniscus. In pro sports you are back in a week at 80 to 90%. This is a very minor nip and tuck today, you're lucky. Pain is good, because as it subsides we know the thing is healing. Yes it is very important to do all the prescribed exercises as soon as the surgeon gives you the green light. Getting back the range of motion is just as important. The first rebuild I had I didn't do as told and had to be put under and have the knee manipulated which is nice way of saying bending the crap out of it and breaking all the scar tissue, now that hurts. Riding a stationary bike with seat very high is the way to start, then lowering it as the pain will allow until you are in full range, more than 90°, start slow. Another good thing is to exercise with a length of dental dam while you're sitting around watching TV, exercise during the commercials, lay on your belly and using the dental dam wrapped around your ankle pull towards your head with both hands gently. Do leg extensions, leg curls once the range is back. Do not wait until your therapy appointments to exercise. If you have little toddlers around watch them like hawks, they love to tackle you right at the knee joint. Check with your surgeon or therapist before you do anything I suggest, for certain. Also after you get through the first 2 days chuck the pain meds. Another story for another day. I've only had to go through it 8 or 9 times, I've lost track. It hurts, really bad for sure. Experience is a lifetime of mistakes, wisdom is knowing how to not make them again. -

I like the dryer lint trick. I'm going to try it on the fire asap. Steel Wool has manganese in it, burns very hot but for a very short time. Like I said as many others have mentioned a lighter works great. I always shake my head when I watch Les Stroud, why didn't you bring a lighter!!!!!!!! My wife always reminds me it's a TV show. That goes for all the other survivalist shows out there. I love the one with the former US special forces guy with the pretty British blond wife. She's always screaming about some bug or snake she has to kill and eat. -

A Zippo kept in a good Ziploc bag. Or no bag. Never had a problem. Worked outdoors on the docks, in the rain, waves pounding on the wharf, and us. You can't radio the First Mate on the ore laker and tell him we'll dock your boat when the wind and rain die down. What's the magnifying glass for? If it's to use the Sun to burn , if everything is wet it's probably raining and overcast. A lighter works great. -
About the only thing that came out of the G20 was dropping the duty on sporting goods coming from and into the US, so says our local member of Provincial Parliament, a PC. If I'm wrong I was fibbed to, can't imagine a politico not telling me the truth.

And don't forget 1 lane in and 1 lane out. Those city planners are off their rockers. There are still farms on the outskirts of Stoney Creek and thousands of acres between 53 and Binbrook but they jam a few thousand townhouses in a village, with 1 lane in and 1 lane out. That's supposed to be progress?!!?? Well they added about 4 stop lights, that helps with traffic?

As I was reading the thread a good friend whom is a licensed contractor from Hamilton calls and I get him the specs on this job and he tells me tough to quote without seeing the job but anywhere from 2.5K to 5.5K. So what do I know? I won't be answering any cost related questions for construction any time soon. Chance, Go with the backflow check valve, no brainer, I don't know where you are in Hamilton but you know that with the overstressed older sewer system and treatment plant on Woodward and add in all the new construction a backflow valve in that city is a must in light of all the flooding seen almost after every heavy rain. Especially in the east end.

I'll take the snowy over deep cold any winter. If I want hardware I'll go as far up north until I find it the first of January. I do miss the ice fishing for the last 10 years. Then around the middle of January I'll keep in touch by looking at the tablet after a round of golf sitting by the pool. Then I'll hit the Snook off the pier after supper, or Sea Trout or Amber Jack or ........ That should be hardware, this touch tablet thing is acting up again and I can't edit. Only on this site for some reason.

I think the quote is very high, unless it's below concrete or asphalt, even that's high. Just today I was having lunch and a pal got 2 quotes to replace a 36' section of weeping tile, properly, one was 12K the other was $5600.00. Both from reputable contractors. It requires a permit here in Haldimand county. You need a $100.00 permit to change a toilet here. The reason I'm told is to ensure the waste line is 4". Please don't get me started.........

I know many here have boats, some small some larger, I said if anyone knows the answer for the question I have we will find it here. A few pals have boats that we are in the process of upgrading and restoring. My duties are to restore and detail the interiors. Both have what appear to have teak appointments. The smaller Grew may not be teak as the wood does have what looks to be a clear coat of spar varnish. I will strip the outer coating off and reseal it if it isn't teak. It looks like it was sealed aftermarket. The question is what is the best way to clean the teak and what would be the best way to treat it afterwards? I am thinking Tung Oil, linseed oil has been suggested as well. Thanks all in advance. JD

Living on the shoreline of Erie we are always getting flybys by all sorts of aircraft. They use the shoreline like a roadway, easy to follow the shore I guess. The best is when there is an airshow and they head back to the states. As the Canadian Warplane Museum is only about 40 minutes away the Lancaster Bomber and other vintage warplanes fly by regularly, you sure know when the old gals are coming, talk about loud, we love it.

Need some input (long distance purchase no paypal)

I know you weren't referring to the OP Bill, I just hate the word. And I know the girl isn't stupid but it sure was the wrong thing done by a very inexperienced mom and daughter. If you read the article it is a sad story. It's the first car she or her low income single mom ever owned and they had not one person they could get advice from. Saved for over 10 years only to have this goof to rip them off. The community came together and she now has a good reliable car to get to Mac and back. It was all done without fanfare or press coverage. It was a nice ending to a sad story. And your right I avoid buying online whenever I can. I'm old school I guess, it's not a trust thing it's more of a lack of understanding how it works thing. I also only pay cash which is getting harder to do. Off subject of course but just last week my 20 something niece said " hey Uncle Johnny you have a cellphone!" of course I do, I'm not that old, " no Uncle John I haven't seen a cellphone for years, everyone has a smart phone ". -
Nice haul my man. I haven't been up there for years, would Atherly be a good spot?
