Saw this yesterday... wasn't impressed.
Old Ironmaker replied to Locnar's topic in General Discussion
Yea pass me a govermint. Now that's funny. Unless these "Russians" were wearing a military uniform how can one tell exactly what nationality they are? Could they have been Ukrainian, from Chechnya, Belarus , Kazakhstan, Croatian, Serbian, Macedonian, from Ohio, maybe Polish or Greek, I sure can't tell until I recognize the language, which isn't easy as for me as I don't speak any of those. Including Ohioan. If they really were Russian I would be careful they might have been former KGB and those guys are pretty tough I hear. To be serious with everyone having a phone in their pockets today why not call something you see illegal in? If I hear the excuse they don't come anyway it makes us as ignorant as the poacher. It is illegal to spoil game fish the last time I read the regs. To kill a fish to harvest the roe to kill another fish is as illogical and insane as it sounds. 20 years ago you walk up to a guy and tell him " pal, that's illegal you might want to think twice about what your doing". Today you might catch a bullet for your efforts. So get out your smart phone, take a picture of the license plate of the car, a picture of the "Russian", call a cop, call a C.O, but do something about it or don't complain it's happening all around you. Yes it's frustrating being told to push 20 numbers before you get a human on the phone, it's infuriating, you can't even order a pizza without going through a 6 digit directory in New York City or L.A. But it's life today as we know it. Is anyone willing to pay triple for a fishing permit if it guarantees someone answer the phone? I don't think so. I love this site, it can be educational but sometimes we need to look in a mirror and ask ourselves who's being ignorant. Stupidity is a DNA thing ignorance is turning a blind eye and then complaining laws are being broken and nobody is doing anything about it. Or pegging someone of being a certain nationality when we really don't know for certain, and does it really matter where they are from? I remember asking my grand father when I was a kid, what part of the Mafia we were in because we are Italian, come on man! -
Lew, I didn't miss your post, I just don't agree with you, at all. I'm glad you haven't had any issues with storing in a barn. After I got the bill for my year old bike I swore I would never store in a barn again. It was the first time I ever had damage to a vehicle in 40 years storing cars, bikes and boats all outdoors. I don't have the bike anymore and still say never store in a farmers barn. The next year I stored it in the sunroom to my wife's utter delight. Better than storing it in the dinning room we never used. All the guys thought it looked pretty cool siting in the corner, the women less so. My opinion only Lew. Johnny D

If my 2 cents count my boat that is close to 20 years old has always been stored outside. It has been shrink wrapped annually since new. Mothballs help but I block the rear opening with a small tarp, very tightly. A cover or tarp not tight can rub against the vehicle or boat thousands of times a day if flapping in the wind and take the paint off to the metal or wear right into the fiberglass. Happened to a buddy years ago when he put a loose tarp on his brand new Alfa. When he took the tarp off in the spring the tarp had taken the paint off to the steel on the fenders hood and boot. I hate storing anything in a barn, unless you want your wiring harness and cables used as nesting materials for rats and mice. Never a barn. Learned that lesson the hard way when I had to rewire my Harley 12 years ago. Yes I put in a box of mothballs. A good coat of wax before storage is key for me. I oil the trailer by hand, takes a few minutes at most. I park it on the lawn and done like dinner. I might jack it this year and store the new trailer tires. Rich makes a good point they are made for the outdoors. As far as protecting a 20K or more investment, look in your drive way and count the money of the cars and trucks you have when bought new. Probably close to 80 grand for 2 vehicles new.

Mike, I don't know if everyone realizes how large a 55" Musky really is? Just yesterday I was at Featherstone Ted's and on the wall of his man cave hangs a 52" replica of a Musky his wife caught years ago. I have never seen it before. Compared to my 42" Tiger Hybrid it is monstrous. And this PB for you is 55", man what a beast. Way to go, I am putting down on my bucket list a charter with you Mike on St. Claire, someday. Si dio volio.

If the internet has taught us anything, asking $75.00 and getting $75.00 for an item is two different things. -
NF--1st Trip To Montreal (And Respecting The Local Culture)
Old Ironmaker replied to brw's topic in General Discussion
Or she can sneak out to a club while you're asleep. As far as speaking French in Montréal, it isn't an issue. They would appreciate you speaking good English rather than poor French. Now if you get over to Quebec City or into rural Québec now that can, sometimes, become an issue. As far as the issue of rude Quebecois tourists, yes they are out there if your definition of rude makes certain behavior rude in your opinion. Then so are many Americans, and Germans and Italians and Croats, and, and, and. It seems if someone is louder then others when partying it is considered to be rude to a white Anglo protestant conservative Canadian. Rude is so objective it is silly to call someone rude if you don't know them. However I have witnessed some ridiculous behavior and questioned it. I was told it's an old game some play, who can be the rudest. Fun to some is ridiculous to others. The bartender said they can be rude all they want as long as the good tips keep rolling in. -
Somewhat off topic but may be interesting to you carp hunters. For 20 years I have watched the carp spawn from my deck, the numbers are staggering. They can keep you up at night with the wild thrashing. This spring I saw a few dozen fish and that's all. Yes the water levels were down then up but this isn't the first time water levels started low and then rose.

I'd suggest you look to trade it for a larger boat, there is someone out there looking to downsize to a smaller boat.
-
Sorry AM, I was thinking Tracker and saying Legend. Meaning to correct myself for a week.

Good point, smaller fish don't exist here, if you have a Walleye on it will be at least 20". I believe the smaller fish just don't school suspended with the big guys, tribs will hold smaller fish but these guys are the migratory fish that move from the western basin in July and return at the end of August. The smaller fish most likely don't make that migration until mature. But then again I missed about 4 years of Biology in University.

For the price of a trailer and a few years, or far less than waterfront, park fees you can buy a small cottage on leased land on Lake Erie. Not waterfront but a cheaper alternative than a trailer and site with much better resale. A recent sale of a pals in laws was a 900sqft cottage at Featherstone Point on a private 50x100 foot lot for 30K, 3 bedrooms, living, dining room, bath with shower and tub, $1000.00 per year lease. None of this in at May out in October, fires out at 10 etc. It's your own private residence and lot. Need to be out for 8 weeks per year. As for the fishing? Phenomenal.

Very sad, deepest condolences. The man was from NB. I'm sure he was experienced. Which sometimes isn't enough.

Over 30 years ago 5 men from the same family lost their lives on the south shore west of Calendar. All experienced boaters that played the wrong card. Sad, unfortunately it will happen again.

I was safety checked recently by an OPP boat on Erie, they told me they found that same day 2 idiots in a canoe, no life jackets and 1 paddle drifting 5 miles from shore off of Nanticoke In the shipping lane!
-
Above is how it's done.
-
There are very few reports of Walleye out of Nanticoke for a few weeks. They were out at the elbow of Long Point Bay but they seem to have moved west to PT. Bruce.

As for trolling speeds they want 2.5 to 3.0 out there now. So like everything else in fishing nothing is standard.

Lake conditions have been OK for a few days but only early mornings. It's kicking up right now.

Angler management, I really am happy for you with the experience you've had with the legend. For every consumer product there will be a bad one for the same product. My Starcraft which will be 20 years old soon does take on a bit of water after 8 hours on the lake. My used Lund had a crack in it from stem to stern. Luckily I had the dealer write a short term leak warranty into the sales contract. Yes it looks like the original OP bought a boat and hasn't returned to shore. Many a new OP post all over the place the same question and forget the original site or username and passwords.

I would be very careful buying a boat farther south than Ohio. Just as I wouldn't buy a snowmobile from north country where they have snow and use it almost daily, on the other end a boat from the southern climes may have more than 20 times more the use that a normal family boat might have been used here in our relatively short Ontario summers.

Never buy a boat from Florida unless you know the boat and owner personally, yea there are many what appear to be deals there but I know people in Florida that actually take their boats to work everyday on the inter coastal waterways. Coupled with the use in brackish and saltwater it is something to stay away from. There is a dealer here in Norfolk that gets many of his boats at southern auctions, cheap. Cleans them up, does some interior repairs and sells them at our Ontario prices. I almost bought one before I made him show me where it came from. He was reluctant to do so, when he did I found it was from Ft. Myers where there is only brackish water and saltwater. He said it didn't matter, I say it does, no deal.

I would also, stay away from Legend boats. They sure look like all the others but just aren't. One of those Miata's or any Pontiac convertibles look like sportscars, they aren't.

Lund, Starcraft, Crestliner, Princecraft. For quality aluminum choose one, you can't go wrong and will have confidence in them 15 miles out on Lake Erie in 2 meter waves if you get caught one day, and you will if you frequent big water.

I've heard the stories of new Legends talking on water after a bout with big waves on Erie.

One thing I would want is an auto bilge on anything other than a small tin can. A bilge on anything with a covered floor minimum.

If you can afford it, I'd buy a smaller boat with a 4 stroke than a bigger boat with a 2 stroke in the future if I was shopping today.

You will get 2 footitis, we all get it, fight it off, there isn't any prescription for it. You are probably already afflicted with this awful disease.

I shopped 4 years ago for mine. I hadn't had 1 since divorcing more than 20 years before. My list for deciding what to buy, * budget, no sence looking at 45K boats if I only have 15 to spend, other than to see what you get for 45K, you might be surprised how little. * purpose, hard to take the family out for a day boating on a 14' aluminum if it's important for the whole family to share. If you are fishing slop and back bays, a 20' deep V might not be what you need. Towabilty* if you have the family mini van and not a 4x4 a heavier glass or aluminum deep V is useless when you can't get it out of a steep ramp. If the closest ramp that will handle your boat is 20 miles from the cottage and is 18 bucks per launch you might think about something you can launch from a neighbours locally. * Annual cost Buying the boat is least expensive part of ownership. Without any breakdowns I can tell you that between dockage , a slip for 2 years, fuel for tow vehicle which really goes up on my truck when pulling a 19 footer, fuel for the boat, gas treatment, batteries, 2 stroke oil, $72.00 a gallon approx. Electronic upgrades, rod holders, downriggers, it will happen. Basic annual maintenance, plugs, wires, fogging agent, and, and, and. I spend about $4000.00 a season using the boat once a week from May 1st to October 1st. Use the boat more then more than 4 grand. That's $200.00 per week, or per day for 5 months. I am being conservative here, it's really closer to 300 a week without repairs and using it more than once a week. I purchased used because I could get the same boat for 30% of what they wanted for the same boat new. It was very difficult to find mine. Great condition and all the bells and whistles. I guess what I'm saying here is the expense of boat ownership goes far beyond plopping down cash at a dealer. It's cost afterward per every dollar of original purchase price is the highest per dollar for a vehicle other than an airplane or race car. Edit, and if you think you're buddies are going to chip in for gas you are nuts. Maybe at the beginning. They will think because you own new boat your rich. Splitting on gas sure isn't splitting on cost. If you make it clear this is what it will cost you will find many are too busy to fish anylonger. As they say, been there done that.

If you don't have a valid sticker you don't have valid insurance. If any doubt call your agent. How in hell can a vehicle pass an emissions test with a straight pipe and no muffler? I know, everything on the internet is true!

Yes I agree that there are many property management sites and a few rags that do what you suggest, which doesn't mean that it can't be improved upon. I'm always a bit leery when I read a review from a property to a restaurant on the internet. There is nothing from stopping the owners from writing a great review for themselves as well the property management company raving about a place, it's done all the time. Actually know a guy that does it for his bar in Hammerton. Lots to gain, nothing to lose until word of mouth catches up to them. He even spells the same words incorrectly on all his posts. One question renegade, how do you make money? You would have many places to be on a Saturday check in, as well as check out, many hundreds of miles apart, or hire local folks to do it for you. Not all people have the same standards, something else to think about. I have had friends rave about an all inclusive on the Islands and found they served dog food without air conditioned rooms.

Looks like you're having fun. Where's your shoes young man? I guess everyone including myself needs to take a hook in a foot first, that will ruin a nice trip to the lake, quickly. I sound like such a Dad.

Albert, Deepest condolences to your family and yourself from Ticha and I. Johnny D

Show off. Have you named them all? I bet you've caught one more than once there! Good going kiddo. You make us all proud out our way.

Has this happened to you? Minn Kota Power Drive v2
Old Ironmaker replied to Wendel's topic in General Discussion
A 20 cent fix. If you have problems on the water the same thing could happen running down the 401 doing 120K, then you really have a problem. A trolling motor flying down the highway is a huge hazard. You would get charged with "unsecured " load most likely and someone could die. Now that's a major problem. I don't see an issue and overthinking, a 2" strap will do the trick. -
Get a head start, why aren't you all naming these places? Defamation can only be proven in court if you say something that is not true, so I am told. Naming them here would be the same as giving a bad review wouldn't it? Names please. I've never rented and been disappointed, we've been lucky, but I've never rented without recommendations before either. Probably why we always went back to the same camps and still do. I recommend Bear Creek Cottages, Nippissing. Cedar Grove, Westmeath Ottawa river. Cosy Cove, Nippissing. Waltonian Inn, Nippissing. Genes Camp, Theresa NY. All others have been private residences and since sold.

There's Okuma and second choice is Shimano, you just can't beat the Okuma for value.
