  1. Well technically no, he kind of drove the car into or under the river
  2. I was always told that ocean waves were measured from mean ocean level to crest and that lake waves were measure trough to crest but from the research I have done this morning this is incorrect. It seems that all official wave measurements are trough to crest. That said, the government weather buoys on Lake Erie sure seem to read about half of the actual wave heights based on my experience but that again could be the 'perception phenomenon' discussed above. Another key thing I noticed while researching things was that the NOAA and Env Canada wave heights are 'average' wave heights and that statistically speaking, waves up to 1.84 times this height are likely to be mixed in. Based on my experience, I don't go on Erie any more unless the weather buoy wave readings are 2.3ft or less and predicted to drop.
  3. Apparently it was over near the Canal on the Keswick side. People got out, car didn't....sounds like they were trying to pull it out though.
  4. Seems like a small step but sounds encouraging nonetheless: http://www.thespec.com/news-story/6366217-watching-the-walleye-in-hamilton-harbour/
  5. The MNRF does nothing that directly affects the majority of the urban dwellers therefore it is unimportant and unnecessary....our money is much better spent on things the like the Union-Pearson express train that runs back and forth empty all day.
  6. Something's a little fishy with that picture & I don't mean the pike....
  7. Crown has asked for 10-12 years, defence has asked for 8 years (less 4 months served on a 1.5:1 basis= 7.5 years). The judge is now deciding....obviously he's not going to walk away but how much is enough?? Sentencing will be March 29th....I thought it would be all done with today but I guess not.
  8. Don't forget to add the HST on top of the 4.3 cents, it get added to base price and then the HST goes on top. May as well call it another 5c/L tax grab.
  9. Well, today is the day. Hopefully Lady Justice is wearing her blindfold and an appropriate sentence is meted out. The crown has asked for 10-12 years: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/marco-muzzo-sentencing-hearing-1.3461517
  10. There are many classes of 'survival' and 'immersion' suits. The best ones are the immersion suits (like you see on "Deadliest Catch") with built in boots, gloves, and hoods. These will give you a couple of hours in icy water but can only be worn in an emergency and are donned just as you abandon ship. They are totally impractical for walking around or working in. The typical suits we wear ice fishing are not dry suits and whether they're one piece or two, you are going to get wet if you go in. They keep you afloat and offer some level of hypothermia protection but it's really only minutes in ice cold water and are more effective in warmer water. That said, they are whole lot better than nothing if you end up in the water.
  11. Floater suits will keep you afloat but don't keep your face out of the water especially once you go unconscious from hypothermia. They definitely buy you some time but don't keep you alive in cold water forever. The charge is over the top and the police should have used some comment sense and discretion. Not all situations are black and white and sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that require different actions by people and different reactions by law enforcement. This is in no way similar to someone who chooses to drink and drive simply because they can't be bothered to make other arrangements. Furthermore, his actions did not cause nor did it worsen the situation, in fact it would appear things would have turned out worse had he not done it. You cannot compare this to the Muzzo situation, it is not the same.
  12. That's exactly the group I was worried about.....it's not paranoia if you know they're out there to get you.
  13. From what I hear, the ice is very, very sketchy in most areas and with all the snow on Tuesday it would likely be difficult to get around. I'm no expert on Quinte but I do know that the ice is very unpredictable at the best of times and this is certainly not the best of times.... If you go, I wouldn't venture too far from other fisherman without some local guidance.
  14. Insurance is required. See tab 12 in this link: https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/90m44#BK13 It also states that CO's have the authority to check. There is an exemption if the machine is being operated on the owner's private property.
  15. Just a heads up, SAIL has one of their 15% off everything sales going on until Sunday. Somebody was looking for a Terrova a few weeks ago and they have the Terrova 80/60/US2/ with i-Pilot for $1750 (less the 15%) with another $100 mail in rebate which is a very, very good price. Disclaimer: I am only giving this heads up for people who want to go buy something on sale. I am not condoning purchases at a big box vs mom'n pop store and and not suggesting Sail is better or worse than Cabela's, Bass Pro, or Lebarons so please don't vilify me for posting this......
  16. There weren't too many people fishing close to shore yesterday, I would say the closest was at least a mile out but there were a few walkers. The operator's perch huts are 2-3 miles out and we were out beyond them a bit. We used to fish Gilford quite a bit but the last couple of years we've been going to the East side. There seems to be a good number of nice size fish, and our last few trips to Cook's Bay were total dink fests. I'm sure there are still some good fish in Cooks but we've had better and more consistent results in Port Bolster and Beaverton.
  17. Lots of good sized perch out of Beaverton. We were fishing near Hales today and did very well.
  18. You must have missed the game last night,...ouch. The hawks laid a good ol' heapin' helpin' of whoop ass on the leafs (marlies) and it was pretty tough to watch.
  19. It kind of hit me during that broadcast that the play by play was really boring. The technical discussion was all really good and Gordon was definitely a breath of fresh air but there was zero emotion or excitement in the race call like there used to be (remember Ned Jarrett when DJ won the 500..???). If the broadcasters can't get excited about the race it's hard for the fans at home to.
  20. Nope....same cars as the points races but they usually have higher horsepower paintjobs!
  21. Actually, the non-points races are usually better than the points events since the drivers and teams can 'go for broke' without affecting their championship points. Some of the greatest highlights of all time come from the special events at Charlotte and Daytona. Despite the race being called the 'Unlimited', the cars do in fact have to follow all the rules they do for a normal race. Anybody remember this classic from the Winston in '87? https://youtu.be/Uo4y7MJfeIs Or the '92 version where the race winner had to be cut from his car?: https://youtu.be/XVmpj-civ3w How 'bout the '09 Bud Shootout: https://youtu.be/yGeaaf8WWOU
  22. Sprint Unlimited Race is on at Daytona tomorrow night and the 500 next weekend! Jeff Gordon was good in the booth on a couple of Xfinity series guest appearances last season and I think he will be pretty interesting this year. Some of the other commentators are very good too but they have very little experience this century for the most part so it will be nice to have some fresh blood. Love the ad too, and whether OI cares or not, some people do.
  23. Could Kessel be moving again???: Kessel was the hot topic at this time last year in the Hockey Thread, he just hasn't panned out as they had hoped.... http://www.si.com/nhl/2016/01/20/pittsburgh-penguins-phil-kessel-trade-possibility
  24. He is still under contract to Tampa, he is not a free agent until the summer.
  25. Bab's already stated yesterday that there would be no new Captain this season....
