  1. I never said I liked them either especially when they clutter up places lake that and Manatoulin Island with them but the land under them is still owned and usable. That said, they are now a fact of life and span the entire North shore of Lake Erie from end to end...strangely, there doesn't seem to be as many along the shore of Lake Ontario for some reason.
  2. Not in Haldimand, Niagara, Strathroy-Caradoc, Essex or most of the other wind farms on the Lake Erie Shore. They all still farm their land, some farms near Nanticoke have 3 or 4 turbines on them and they still grow cash crops.
  3. The leases to the wind farms are just to put the turbine on and guys are getting as much as $30000 plus per year for one turbine from what I've been told. You still get to farm your property around the base of the windmill. The land leases you guys are referring to are for cash croppers to rent your land for growing grain....
  4. The article is confusing but there were no boats sent from Trenton to Lake Erie. Trenton is the CCG Rescue Coordination Centre and they send boats from the nearest coast guard sub-base. SAR aircraft I believe do actually take of from Trenton for Eastern Lake Erie.
  5. I did a bit of digging and the 40HP Yammy starter should draw between 100- 125A. If you punch the numbers in to the calculator below using a 5% voltage drop (which is pretty much the recommended max) and a 28 foot run (remember on a boat it's a 2 way run) it will tell you a #2 AWG wire is required. A #6 AWG cable would have over 10% drop which is excessive and would definitely heat up the wire and starter if you had to crank for any length of time. A #4 would be marginal unless it's actually 7 feet each way (14 foot total) in which case it would be fine. http://www.wirebarn.com/Wire-Calculator-_ep_41.html
  6. I installed one of these 'Battery Brains' on my starting battery 10 years ago and it's saved my bacon a few times. If you're running your electronics for a long time with no engine, it will automatically shut everything down before before the battery gets too low to start the engine. It also has a little remote control that shuts everything down when you're done boating to prevent accidental drain and also acts as a very good theft deterrent as well. They work awesome. If you leave your boat in the water, you should hook your bilge pump direct to the battery however or it won't run if needed. They have them at automotive specialty shops and on e-bay. http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/sms-333126/overview/ https://youtu.be/yECwvd1Qhtg
  7. I use the same one (3 bank) with similar great results (only 5 years old though...).
  8. My thoughts exactly. It seems like yesterday we were down at the creek catching tadpoles and minnows and now he's off to the Amazon River to do a species at risk study for the summer. I'm a proud father but mom isn't so keen on the creatures her son is catching now, they have big teeth!
  9. Like Bill said, you have all functions through the remote you just can control it from your chartplotter....have fun!
  10. All the Esso fuel (including regular) that comes out of the Nanticoke refinery is ethanol free. Double check at your local station but Davis Fuels supplies a few of the independent stations out my way from Esso and they assure me that this is the case. They told me that Nanticoke does not currently even have the capability to add ethanol. Also, you may notice that many of the trucks lined up at the distribution terminal down there are Petro-Can and Pioneer as they all share fuel in the more remote areas to save on transportation. If you can confirm that the gas comes from Nanticoke, you will know it's ethanol free regardless of whose name is on the pump.
  11. Find a friend....I have the same problem.
  12. I was reading through this thread yesterday wondering why the group of young people I know is so different than the kids being described here. I have 2 kids who are both in their very early 20's now and I have been very lucky to spend a lot of time with them and their large group of friends through their sports and other social activities (like fishing). With very few exceptions, these kids are smart, respectful, and most have at least one job while many are juggling 2 or more. They are also much more responsible than the group of people I grew up with, we were lucky to survive our teen age years with some of the stunts we used pull. If they go out, they have DD's and if they have a party at someone's house they stay over; they are welcome at any of the homes including mine any time. Some of their gang are in university, some at community college and some have pursued trades or other careers but they all work hard for the most part. I'm sure there are lots of kids at the other end of the scale too but let's not toss them all under the bus, they have a tough row to hoe growing up too just like we did. When I was done with this train of thought yesterday, I decided to read the news. That's when I found this story about the kids you guys are talking about: http://www.brantfordexpositor.ca/2016/04/26/police-arrest-two-teens-in-separate-domestic-disputes
  13. Bravo Zulu (well done) to you on the hookup! While I was crawling under my dash to verify the wiring on my boat, I found the GPS wire that came loose on my Smartcraft gauges last year and now they are firing on all cylinders too! I think it was good karma because I had no real intention on sorting that one out without a good reason.
  14. Well let's not get too hasty....wait to see if it works first!
  15. Okay here is it, mine is a GX1000S as well hooked to Lowrance HDS: It is not at all clear in either manual but you hook the Radio NMEA Input (+) [bLUE] to the HDS TX (+) [YELLOW]. Connect the Radio NMEA (-) [GREEN] to the ground wire on the HDS and you're good to go. Just double checked my wiring on board to be sure and that's all there is to it. The purple wire on the radio is not used nor are the wires for the external speaker. Hope this helps.
  16. I have a very similar setup. You only need two wires, I will go dig out my manual after supper, I made my own diagram after going through the same routine.....stand by.
  17. The Premium card was discontinued as of Jan 1 2016, I hope you got a good deal on it....
  18. It appears you are using the Navionics + chip. If so, you need to go the 'Chart Options' menu and turn on 'Fish'n Chip" and the detailed sonar charts should show up. Your chart source of course has to be set to 'Navionics' first and not 'Lowrance'.
  19. Most of the newest radios I have looked at have built in GPS already, no need to connect with these ones.
  20. DSC stands for Digital Selective Calling. Most radios have DSC in this day and age. It digitally sends and emergency signal including your GPS location to all stations within range at the press of a single emergency button. They will see your vessel identity and location as well as whether it is a 'Distress, 'Urgency' or 'Safety' transmission. Here's a link with some more details: http://www.vhf-dsc.info/what.html
  21. You'd be foolish to buy a radio without DSC. If you are truly concerned about an emergency, you will have help coming to your exact location at the push of a single button. Seems like too good a feature to be without to me. The digital signal also has a much greater range than the regular radio signal as well.
  22. You are required by law to identify yourself if you are involved in a regulated activity (i.e hunting or fishing) or if the LEO is giving you a ticket. Here is an excerpt from a Law Society of Canada document they published as a guide during the recent 'Carding' debacle:
  23. i think all the info you will need can be found here for the boat and trailer: http://boating.ncf.ca/license.html
