  1. As someone who drove many times Sudbury to Toronto, I am not shedding any tears for the 'lost history' as a result of the four lane. My 'lost history' includes absolute carnage on the 2 lane highway 69 that at times involved multiple vehicles and plenty of deaths. As for the small towns dying - the businesses in Nobel (just north of Parry Sound) had known that the bypass was coming for the last 10 years. They did nothing about it -were even squabling about 4 lane highway signage as late as last spring. The Tim Horton/Wendy's combination in Nobel could have been kept open and advertised as an alternative to the already over-run and over crowded 'travel center' now south of Parry Sound. The Lick's burgers at this stop is not set up to quickly handle traffic from both buses and commuters and lineups of 100 or more people at the Hortons are not uncommon. If you are contemplating stopping for other than a washroom break and see a bus in the parking lot, keep on going. The former Marks is still open although called CedarCrest or something like that. Food is reported to be good.
  2. Go back further in time and you'll discover that the original 'white' settlers of this area were displaced farm workers -rednecks so named for the time spent out in the fields - from Scotland. While better educated Scots were making their marks around the world -John A MacDonald, Sanford Fleming and others - the rednecks were the squalling drunken louts. As such it should come as not much of a surprise that a man from Kentucky -Clay I think it was - was a big proponent behind America attacking British North America in 1812. Seeing as Britain was dealing with Napoleon in Europe and minor grade troops were garrisoned in Canada, Americans such as Clay thought the timing was right to fulfill American 'Manifest Destiny' - occupying all of North America. Due to a number of factors, including an enlistment clause which determined that U.S. troops would not have to leave American territory unvoluntarily, the U.S. lost the war. They did get a national anthem out of it though. Program on the War of 1812 on the History Channel (Canada) this Sunday at 9.
  3. The CRTC rules need to be changed to allow foreign competition. Wind Mobile got nothing but a hassle and plenty of whining from Bell and Rogers when they bought up available cell frequency space - parent company was off shore. The president of Wind challenged Rogers and Bell to go international - quit hiding behind government skirts. Neither would last two minutes. Canada has the highest rates in the world.
  4. Demographically, I have to disagree with this. As baby boomers die off, there will be more (and less expensive) property available. The kids and new Canadians are not into the 'cottaging' life style.
  5. You might try Goreski's on Lake Scugog. Haven't been there in a while, but one year set up a tent/screen tent next to the water and rented dock space for a couple of months. It was a bit pricey but nice having the boat tied up and ready to go as well as a restaurant and other facilities handy. No vandalism/theft that I remember at the time, but did see a few untended boats that were stern down with rain water - make sure you visit frequently in case your bilge pump goes. I would not count on any marina owner to keep an eye out for your boat. Also, did lose some boat bumpers at another marina - might help if you 'melted' the attaching rope to help prevent a quick borrowing of them.
  6. Article: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/biologists-sound-warning-snakehead-fish-reported-suburban-vancouver-192808114.html They do have the good pot out there....but you never know.
  7. Mine as well and the same complaint! Anyone tried out the liquid eggs in a 'cardboard milk' like container in the dairy section? Might have to be kept refridgerated I guess.
  8. If you are going to use a mooring cover as a trailering cover, talk to the fabricator about reinforcing areas that might be stressed in the tail stream such as the bow point and along the leading edge of the cover. Mine was constructed with a few reinforcing strips that help prevent the wind buffeting that will wear out the cover. A little bimini cover is also a nice addition while getting the mooring cover made. Not too much more expensive, but nice sun protection or can be put up during a sudden rain. The cover in the picture is a Sunbrella fabric. No experience with Topgun. Some people recommended Aerospace 303 (360?? not sure)as a good anti UV protectant. Too early for me to tell if it made a difference or not. Would not leave it on over the winter as mice can live for years on the fabric.
  9. If you need a bit more anti-slip on certain areas - floors, gunnel - would recommend the self-adhesive anti-slip tape sold at Home Depot. Available in rolls of black or white. Located in the store next to the display of tubes of silicone and other sealers. Have used it on both boat and pontoon boat and has lasted many seasons without lifting.
  10. It's not on the side of the tube, but I'd try using Lepages PLP construction adhesive. Used it on all kinds of materials, including building up layers on the inside of a cracked and leaking toilet tank (dried out and glue built up to 1/4 inch or so)and it has worked magnificently. Perhaps using a 'plastic' glue for the joining surfaces of the crack to hold together, then building an exterior layer with the PLP will give it the strength the bond needs to survive boat speeds in water.
  11. Nice looking craft! Sadly, my experience with BW Marine was not too good. Needed some wheel and bearing info about one of their boat trailers I bought and couldn't get the time of day out of them despite having all relevant information at hand. The canoe side of the enterprise must be friendlier.
  12. While I haven't checked the side of the box of soap for dishwashers lately, I was never enthused by the list of chemicals that threatened to end the anaerobic action of the septic tank, which would result in clogging the leaching pipes (and their aerobic action)and some heavy duty replacement/refurbishment costs, or a holding tank (YIIKES)if ground was old and saturated. However, a dishwasher has many positive aspects, even at the camp. -you can wash dishes at a time when the hydro rates are at a lower cost per KWH through an automatic setting. -thorough washing and drying in a machine cuts down on the possibility of the 'runs' (G.I. distress)that might result through use of dirty rags and towels used in hand washing.(I know two hospitals that lost accreditation for such practices) -you can store dirty dishes to wash later in a large batch so that wear and tear is spread out amongst your whole collection as opposed to using the same ones over and over again. Consider how many times the average dish goes through hot and cold cycles through a microwave, gets chipped, cracked and other stresses. Might be time to have another look if the soap is improved as much as others say it has.
  13. I'd be looking into what auto dishwasher soaps do to a septic system as opposed to non-phosphate hand washing soap.
  14. Buy what hp you think, but would advise an electric start option. Got a manual start on a kicker hoping to save money, but shoulder went bad, and have a hard time pulling the starter now.
  15. John Candy, when performing on the SCTV comedy show did a very good parody. Jimmy Buffet, the musician, was visiting at Scuttlebutt Lodge. The two went fishing from a hot air balloon. Candy's dialogue " we're up over Lake Whatever, using a purple jig on about 5 miles of line....."
  16. The CEO says it was a big mistake because his company, a multi-national concern, was not allowed to compete with Rogers and Bell, who are well protected by government regulation fences. He challenged Rogers and Bell to dare to venture beyond Canada's boundaries and show what kind of companies they really are as opposed to hiding behind the federal governments skirts.
  17. I was interested in a Lund Renegade 16 foot sport model with walk thru windshield. A good serviceable boat that I could see. But because this boat is 'bare bones' (no dealer profit for added stuff) no one in Ontario will keep them in stock. None at boat show either. Down to the good ole USA I guess although might have to travel to Maine. What the heck...good lobster rolls around there.
  18. Transmission part might be called a modulator valve. Reads vacuum and shifts gears - diaphram wears out over time.
  19. Should get your fishing done quickly...aren't the Mayans predicting the end of the world in 2012?
  20. Went into the Parry Sound Ontario government office today to renew....clerks there said best way to get what you need is on-line - the phones are very busy. The office itself is not on-line yet with the new system and won't be until late January - 24th I think she said. The same was true with several commercial outlets in Parry Sound - Canadian Tire, etc. Was told that the convenience store in McKellar (30 kilometers out) was up and running so went out there. Entered the front of the store at the exact moment the two owners were bent over the machine and waving their arms in the air. So no go there either. The machine was supposed to spit out some bilous green stickers. Not sure where the 'card' part of the license comes in and the usually very efficient staff at the Parry Sound office hadn't been advised about it either. I don't like to use credit cards on the internet so will be patient and try to get through on the phone.
  21. I will never buy another Moen product. After having cut an access hole in a one piece bathtub fiberglass enclosure while building our place, and getting lousy shower pressure from the Moen shower set up, eventually called customer service 800 number for advice. Was told cartridge could not be changed and required minimum 60 psi water pressure - nothing on the carton about that. Was (like many others) operating on my own pump at 40 and no need to increase. Service rep became abusive after being asked for alternatives or an exhange on the kit. Needless to say, nothing done. Now have two showers, one at each end. The Moen end is a constant reminder to avoid this company and to let others know of their lousy customer service.
  22. The trick is to bring the bow of your boat smashing down on the ice and break it up that way. Carrying a long 2 X 4 also comes in handy.
  23. Yes, saw a pretty good line up at the Sail store in Oshawa. I believe there was a liquid fuel one on the shelf....has been re-designed for auto generator cleaning and the fuel rod runs between the burners if I remember correctly. Prefer the naptha stove over propane - having to dispose of the small steel propane cylinders when empty seems a waste. You get a lot of cooking out of a quart/liter sized tin of naptha and is generally available in most places. A multi fuel stove - naptha/gasoline stove would also be handy, but having 2 Coleman's still running from over 30 years ago, feel no need to upgrade.
  24. Buy some health insurance if you end up driving through the U.S.
  25. Sometimes these types of shows are okay, but totally disgusted with 'Gold Rush Alaska' and its newest incarnation, 'Gold Rush'. On the positive side, the producers have really good facial hair consultants - the characters really look the part of rough tough prospectors, complete with stern faces and crossed arms. The rest of it is horse pucky - trying to place 'the Klondike' as part of the USA - it is in Yukon, Canada. And they know next to nothing of placer mining. Horrible damage to the environment - Tore up the equavalent of a few football fields with a bull dozer to find that the area had already been mined -idiots.
