Have to agree compared to previous series in NWT and Alaska. Way better program is Ice Pilots NWT on History at 8pm. Have completely given up on Gold Rush Alaska (Discovery channel)...bunch of blundering idiots.

Products might be a little pricey, but you can't beat the service at White Squall just north of Parry Sound. www.whitesquall.com/(you want their location by Killbear Park) As soon as the ice is off the water, you can test drive any model. They also have used ones for sale from their summer instructional sessions.

Sour grapes perhaps but - we left Yellowknife/NWT in 1997 after five years of minus 40 setting in just before Christmas, staying that way until it warmed up to -20 in March (and everyone went around with their parkas open to enjoy the warmth) then when it went up to -10 or so in May, it was time to get a few outdoor things done. I used to curse Whitehorse for the good temps over there, but looks like the last few years in Yellowknife has been pretty good as well! (sorry to hear Caribou Carnival is in doubt this year...)

One year for me after about 30 years of a pack a day. My hints: -if you slip the first time you quit, learn from it. Used Champix twice, first time thinking I'd wake up one day and not smoke. Next time, read directions and set a target date. Can still remember last smoke and after got rid of ash trays etc. Chew gum like crazy. -biggest problem is filling in psychological hole in life - i.e. have a smoke while considering a task or problem, take a smoke break during completion of task, have a celebratory smoke when done. Had an awfully hard time getting started on things as a result of not having smoke to start! (As an aside, never bet on a professional sport player who has just returned to the game from rehab at least for a while.) -didn't want to give up coffee, so switched to 'heartier' specialty stuff from Starbucks. Had extra kick. -the urge to smoke is still there, but a lot less. (still, second hand smoke is enjoyable from time to time!) -the dangers of smoking outweigh those of extra weight (which will come) but give yourself a few months before worrying unduly about this. Beat one thing at a time.

Would just parallel the scenario - "What if it had been a large rock that was hit?"
-
Not quite - this stuff does: Mr. Sticky Poly-Bonder http://a-a-i.net/polybonderuses.htm

Mr. Sticky Poly-Bonder http://a-a-i.net/polybonderuses.htm or If it is ABS you need epoxy with methocrylate in it. Permatex makes this.

If he needs something simple for a small lake, he may consider building a prefab model from U Fab - http://u-fabboats.com They are in Smith Falls, ON. Saved some shipping by picking up myself from outlet. In a similar situation, got a 14 by 8 foot model which moves well with a 9.9 horse. As well, was able to add my own features without a lot of useless trim. After three years, no problems, even when pontoons accidentally frozen into ice over winter. Very easy to assemble - actually stopped to read directions half way through as job was going too well. Only downside is that if you want to insure it, you have to get a marine surveyor to inspect and certify it. There is nothing to hit where I am so didn't bother. Approximate costs: -frame/pontoons from UFab $3,000.00 -3 sheets 3/4" marine ply @ $150.00 -1 sheet 3/4" TP plywood $50.00 -2 seats/pedestals $170.00 -paint tremclad 1.5 gallons $50.00 -side rails to hang stuff - material at hand

Whitehorse and parts of Yukon are occasionally subject to warm air blowing in off the Pacific Ocean. Makes for nice temps in the winter. Yellowknife is in the Arctic weather pattern...if I remember correctly dictated by weather over Siberia..

If you think driving in Toronto is bad.......

As the only white collar worker among blue collars, he is out of his element. I'd be wary of the old guy myself...indiscriminantly digging holes all over for no reason, and smashing up his own truck in the process. Further research reveals that none of the characters are broke or about to lose their homes etc. in real life so the whole program is Bull -
At a Burger King in Edmonton....give an order for fast food and hand the guy a twenty dollar bill - expecting change. He takes my twenty, puts it in the till, closes the till and asks me if I need a receipt. Flag goes up in my head....rarely do you need a receipt in a fast food restaurant. Say no, but want change back from twenty. After profuse fake apology, I get my change, close to $12 back. So...while eating get seated where I can see the counter...guy pulls the same thing on all the next customers for the next half hour and manages to misdirect 3 groups to forget to get change. Before leaving, talk to manager. He fluffs it over and says he'll deal with it. Call corporate number the next day and relate story. Receive gift certificate in mail several days later...turns out the whole staff was in on the scam.

Find all these type programs interesting, but having difficulty figuring out whether to admire or pity the people in "Alaska Gold Rush" (or is it Gold Rush Alaska?) They spend $150,000 on gear, transport it from Oregon to Alaska, and although none of them know anything about mining, attempt to escape the recession by striking it rich on a leased gold claim. Trip of a life time for sure, but if that amount of money was available, they could have escaped the recession doing something for which they had some knowledge (or smarts by the look of things) -
Wonder who did the marketing research on the name 'Impact'. Some pretty low water levels last summer.

And place/anchor sheets of black plastic on bottom to keep from growing back.

Thanks for giving it a thought...I have the navigational maps from Mattawa past Petawawa/Pembroke to Arnprior but not at hand. It would seem strange that this body of water would not be on the map chip as information is so readily available, yet I don't see anything on the list.
-
I looked up this list on the web site hoping to find a few rivers...specifically the Ottawa River. Don't see any on the list. Is this because the Ottawa is made up of a few lakes? (Noticed this on navigation maps but don't know the lake names well enough.)

Many users on forums complain about motor imbalance on the straight fives (had added weights or something added by GM) and valve train problems. Indicative of GM stupidity - they've probably got dozens of serviceable V6's kicking around and should have put one in these trucks. No one, including the German manufacturers have had much luck with running straight five engines.
-
You can make your own....three major ingredients - kerosene, naptha gas, isopropyl alchohol - look up the percentages on the WHMIS sheet on the web site. Everybody seems to be in love with this stuff. Try Slick 50 while you're at it.

cross border shopping is it really worth the deals

The service at most Canadian Walmarts is haphazard at best....maybe they are trying to make the Canadians feel at home... -
Happens twice a year to varying degrees...still not used to it? Looks like the bridge at Providence is happening....eventually We sometimes get nostalgic about our time in the NWT..until we see the -20 or more start up in October/November!

Back in the old days everyone is writing about, banks were extremely stingy when lending money for consumer goods. You could get a fixed interest mortgage for 30 years, but loans for anything else were rare. You may remember a TV commercial for HFC - Household Finance Corporation. Their slogan was "we believe when you want something it becomes a need!". Not sure what happened to HFC, but the banks realized they were missing out on a money maker and began lending more freely. Thus began a long trail of instead of figuring out how to make things cheaper (while taking into account fluffy 'options' to things - such as heated mirrors on cars)they just figured out easier ways for consumers to finance things. Looks like 7 year terms for a car loan these days? Also, in northern Ontario there was 1 TV station. The then owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs wouldn't allow the broadcast of Hockey Night in Canada to include the first period of Leafs' games to encourage people to buy tickets and see the game in person. As a 5 year old youngster, signed up for 'Squirts' organized hockey and during our first game, half the kids headed for the shack after 2 periods thinking that's how many periods were in the game! I hate the Leafs to this day, have never spent a cent that would benefit them and (apologies in advance) have a dim view of anyone with a Leafs license plate or flag on their vehicle!

Bought a utility/landscape trailer from them that rusted like crazy after one winter weekend trip on salted roads. Mechanically still okay, but looks derelict. Not sure I'd buy from them again.

Thanks Burt!

Have saved your pics and recipe to give it a try. Any chance you'd post the schnitzel recipe? Thanks.

Has nothing to do with Canada.
