  1. It seems that this outfit - MTD Canada- makes quite a few snow blowers under different names: http://www.mtdcanada.com/home.asp It you buy one of them, parts are not a problem as they are shared over several makes. I purchased a Cub Cadet two years ago. Home Depot was selling them, but did not sell the replaceable lugs??? They did not sell tire chains for them either - salesperson told me with the tires they came with, you wouldn't need them. (absolute baloney)A part-timer would be assembling it for $40 or so. So I went to a local dealer-Georgian Small Engines. They took a deposit of 25% for pickup the following weekend. Following weekend, no one had any knowledge of my blower! They did get one together in an hour. I ended up re-assembling it myself as parts were loose. The snow blower works okay now. But I'd recommend learning something about them before purchasing.
  2. Find it curious that a bunch of so called US conservatives would call themselves "The Tea Party". Seems a little 'Hansel and Gretal' to me.
  3. No thanks. I will support the effort of individuals who will put in effort and make sacrifices to improve their job skills and make themselves more hireable.
  4. A singing and dancing frog was found in the time capsule. It will only perform for the people that first found it. Loblaws is trying to get it to perform in front of other people and in front of a video camera....
  5. Usually after a good spray at the wand wash, I let mine dry and then apply a coat of Nu Finish car wax - apply and wipe off. After a summer of use, the wax is still evident. (they call it the once a year car wax that will survice 50 car washes)
  6. X2 ....also Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Redford, Newman The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean - Newman
  7. The marine product with built in UV inhibitors is called Starboard. You can order it from Pride Marine in Kingston among other places. Their web site shows building tips. Glue for this is called Mr. Sticky's Poly Binder. I have glued a piece to the aluminum transom of my boat. There is a special burnishing technique with a torch prior to applying glue. It is outlined on the Mr. Sticky's web site. Basically you are freeing electrons, allowing the glue to work.
  8. Give White Squall a call or an email in Carling township, just north of Nobel, on your way to Harris Lake. They might have maps. http://www.whitesquall.com/
  9. This sounds like very good advice. I usually fasten the prop with a rubber bungy while towing to keep from spinning. With the outboard in gear, your throttle linkage is engaged, freeing fuel flow to carbs or injectors, and perhaps placing undue wear on linkages, springs, accelerator pumps, etc.
  10. During a spell away from Japanese mid-size trucks, got a brand new Dakota in 2004. Figured it was safe, as final year in model line and most bugs would be worked out. Wrong. A lumbering jackass of a vehicle and couldn't wait to get rid of it. It had the 3.7 which was underpowered and hard on gas. If you get the 3.7, find one with a standard transmission. -vehicle was skunked right from design phase due to lousy fuel system - did not use a mass air flow sensor, but determined base line specs through mathematics between air temperature and barometric pressure. Stories exist of having to stop truck in mountainous areas to 'reset' the barometric sensor to get proper acceleration. -onerous maintenance schedule to keep truck in warranty. Oil change required at every 5000 kilometers, rear diff lube changed at 19,000 kilometers intervals, no drain plugs for differential so 'pumpkin' casing had to be removed to drain and then resealed before new lubricant put in. For most people dealer only job at $400 for a 4X4 truck. -Steering column needed replacement at 90 km (yes, ninety), crank position sensor went at 16 thousand kilometers (on the 3.7 they left off the cam position sensor so engine had no reference to go into a 'default' mode that might have got me home), one ball joint bad at 80 thousand km, both bank O2 sensors replaced twice before 125 thousand km, plus other stuff I forget. Truck was delivered with some in cab parts rusty - seat mechanisms, dash support structure, etc. Box was mounted crooked. Doors and hood misaligned. -One good thing - you could read check engine codes by manipulating the odometer in a certain way - didn't need a scanner - check Dodge internet forums. -The next few model years after 2004 had problems with the wrong size rear axle installed, the usual ball joint problems, and a bunch of different engines with 'inspirational' names like Magnum, but with little practical use other than marketing. -The pictures of workers smoking pot and drinking beer during their lunch hour at the Warren truck plant answered a lot of my questions as to how a company could sell crap like this vehicle. And lastly, having had dealings with many dealers, found the Dodge dealers to be the worst in 'upselling' while truck was in for service. Having cleaned/serviced the battery for winter the day before an oil change, was 'surprised' to be informed that the truck needed a battery service @ $50. Of course due to regulations, wouldn't let me see my own battery. end rant and bad flashback
  11. Have also used the USB internet sticks in rural area....Bell's version broke down and they refused to fix it.....for the Rogers stick reception was terrible, took it back after 2 days, stilled got dinged $15 after arguing down from $45 on their aptly named 'buyer's remorse' program. Finally got a decent stick, Sierra 360, from Telus with a plug in antenna which helped immeasurably. Like yourself, service slows down considerably with increased cell traffic, but is pretty good early in the morning and late in the evening. I did not subscribe to a 'plan' for any of them.
  12. According to something I read, a fish which is caught and landed suffers the equivalent of a human running a 52 kilometer marathon. I try to get fish back in as quickly as possible. What really bugs me is when the hosts of fishing shows scoop a fish out of the water, and stand there blah, blah, blahing, without any move to get it back where it belongs. That being said, once my spouse and I were watching characters played by Mickey Rourke and Kim Bassinger in the movie "9 1/2 Weeks". The two sat in front of an open fridge while Rourke applied various food groups to Bassinger's naked body. I kept thinking to myself, "shut the fridge door...you're wasting electricity..."
  13. Have found that 'cheap' motels don't exist much below $100 / night these days. You might consider checking the off season prices on a few weekly rentals at lodges/resorts. Rainbow cabins are on Otonobee River close to the its mouth on Rice Lake...being on river might give some shelter on a blustery day. http://www.internetsportshow.com/searchit/rainbowcottagesresor.htm
  14. Maybe someone with the same boat and a bunk trailer can take measurements for you? Try googling though, as I remember one trailer manufacturer had a tutorial on it. Going back some time, so can't be any more helpfult than that.
  15. The policies of the MNR aren't helping, as far as I'm concerned. Our camp is on a small lake about .8 of a mile long and average 12 feet in depth. Someone bought a cabin there and started renting it out. There is another property for sale and rumour has it they want to buy this one to rent out as well. In the past, renters who are just there for a week and don't care, have over fished, keeping every thing they catch. I have tried to ask MNR to declare the lake a catch and release lake only, but have been turned down as they want 'rules to be consistent' with various species and other lakes. So according to them, there are no special circumstances that might apply to a particular lake in need of attention.
  16. Thanks for posting...very good read. Looked at the website for Happy Day Lodge as a result and am confused by their rates. It costs more to stay there (camping wise at least)and fairly substantially, if you are fishing on a sport license, than it does if you have a conservation license? Any idea what the rationale is behind this?
  17. The reason these things even make it to the news is the relative importance of the parents....kids from 'ordinary' families rarely get this exposure when charged with a crime. And we are used to the 'priviledged' ones getting a break in punishment. The fellow convicted and sentenced had a long list of speeding tickets prior to this event which denotes he wasn't that responsible to begin with. Reminds me of the kids of rich parents in Muskoka several years back who died in a drunk driving accident. Expensive car, previous driving convictions, waiters at a private club intimidated by wealthy guests so wouldn't cut off the drinks....recipe for disaster. Where were the parents?
  18. Otonabee River. Launch at any of the resorts. There are two marinas close by Peterborough, Bensfort Bridge Resort about half way between Peterborough and Rice Lake. Not sure about public launches but research Wallace Point. Calm water to start on river, but access to Rice Lake if you want bigger water.
  19. -if you haven't seen Canada yet, do the Canadian drive first. Some great scenary. -if you go U.S. route, make sure you've bought some travel insurance from CAA or one of your credit cards. You never know. -have U.S. currency, especially coins, to get through all the tolls. And there are a lot of them. Despite the exchange rate, Canadian money is poorly looked upon. -economic conditions being what they are in Northern Ontario, (bad) boosting some local Canadian economies might be appreciated. That way when you need them on fishing trips etc. they will still be there.
  20. -"time is money" -"pay yourself first" - the Wealthy Barber (on the subject of why budgets don't work)
  21. In some ways not surprising....in my younger days, male friends and I would read 'Cosmopolitan' magazine articles telling the women where to go to meet guys...then we would go there. Joking aside...my spouse has a lot more fun than I do as she is fairly successful trying techniques that pop into her head at any time, as opposed to the 'usual' methods for various species.
  22. For French River, try Deer Bay Park...no website but they're are close to the French River Golf Course and share the same road. Their seasonal sites may be booked up, but they have several camp sites where you could arrange a month or two? Plenty of uninterupted water on French River from that point. Here is the link to the golf course so you can determine location: http://www.frenchrivergolfcourse.com/ Also, try Googling resorts along the highway 522 that runs from Grundy Lake park junction at highway 69 over to Trout Creek at highway 11. There are a number of establishments along this route which would allow 40 miles of boating on the Pickeral River. Again, not sure of seasonal saturation as was looking for camping spots. Went on a drive there last spring. Lost Channel Inn looked interesting. Just remembered this place as well, which might work out somehow for you Cedar Village on the Pickeral: http://www.cvprm.ca/trailers.shtml
  23. On your return, come back hwy 17 to North Bay, then 11 to 400, to 401. Not necessarily the fastest, although there are plenty of passing lanes now on 17, which is preferable in my opinion to getting stuck behind a manure spreader on the 2 lane highways mentioned above....but you also get to stop at the Riverview Lunch, on highway 17, just east of Mattawa, proximate to Valois Motel....very excellent Bison/Buffalo burgers. Order one all dressed with fries or poutine. You won't regret the stop. Here's the restaurant: Here's the burger:
  24. An education program in the area and more signs posted in the parks/lodges would be a good idea. We were fishing around Bensfort Bridge, first week of July, and kind of coaching some new Canadians. One snagged a goby and had no idea what it was. Luckily we had the fishing regs with us, showed them a picture, and it was returned dead back to nature.
  25. .. The Legend goes....Once long ago, in the Land of the Midnight Sun, long before the Walmart, the Canadian Tire, the McDonalds, the Boston Pizza, the smoke free hotel on Airport Road...hmmm they could make one of their sentimental TV ads about it... Actually was rescued before it closed. What is now popularly known as 'an intervention'. There was also another flap about their huge inflatable coffee cup not conforming to local sign bylaw regulations. It was time to move elsewhere....Yellowknife was following the customs of places in the south....you were even required to license your cats....
