  1. Blue green algae reported on this lake in September - October. Watch carefully for outbreaks as this stuff is very poisonous.
  2. I was a big Krown fan until a local applier did not protect rubber parts with a silicone spray first, my vehicle appliques and rubber swelled and was damaged, and the owner of the place blamed me saying "your car wash soap went bad and did that damage". (later contacted Simonize who told me the soap had an unlimited life span - shake if frozen at some point) I complained to Krown corporate and the Auto Protection Association who are their boosters and little was done about my damage. After some research, realized that Krown does swell door gaskets and other rubber parts and can harm certain types of wiring harnesses as well. I switched to Corrosion Free - although research indicates Canadian Tire is not the place to get it done - and have been happy since. Treatment lasts 18 months, no swelling of gaskets, and surface rust has stopped on frame and underbody. For those who don't think at least an under oil spray is useful, consider the damage done to brake lines by the new liquid anti ice stuff they are using on highways now - much more corrosive than 'rock' salt or calcium.
  3. Was told by the barber downtown Parry Sound (Royal Hotel) that because Mill Lake is a flooded lake for a dam, there are high levels of arsenic. Keep fish consumption from the lake low. Drinking water from lake? hhmmmm
  4. Agree generally, however as the ferry crossing costs you two days - assuming day crossing - night before motel - cross all day - night in motel on landing. A drive around Cabot Trail uses the time spent waiting for your pre-crossing motel (in this case in North Sydney) Drive the Cabot Trail clockwise - best scenary this way and what a drive it will be, with a stop for lunch at this place: http://www.rustyanchor.co/ which is about half way around. Make sure you have good brakes for the trip - many steep hills as road hugs the coast line. (they advertise the lobster rolls at the Rusty Anchor - while very good, are not using the authentic bun bread as they do in Maine)
  5. Here are a few url's and pointers from trip last year from Southern Ontario: -if driving through Quebec, make sure you take the highway 30 toll route around Montreal, there and back. -rose motel - edmundston, n.b. -Nothing fancy - good place to crash - http://www.tourismnewbrunswick.ca/Products/R/Rose-Motel-Cabin.aspx -port hawkesbury - causeway inn - AVOID!!! - toilet next to wall, right handed person can't wipe ass, seat would not stay up so urinated into recycling bin and poured into toilet. Still looks like a good place though, although I would now recommend Rocky Harbour as a better spot for amenities) -haven motel - st. anthony - room 137 - efficiency suite 2 rooms mini kitchen etc. next to exit for easy loading, close to tim hortons, gas, mall and fast food http://www.haveninn.ca/ -Lanse aux Meadows Viking Settlement - lots of walking however. -By the sea inn and cafe - kings point -room #1 jacuzzi room best view - restaurant good - wifi internet not working One of the best places we stayed - construction on new rooms might be a problem for noise, but location can't be beat. http://www.bythesearesort.ca/ -murray premises - st.john's - room 311 - harbour view if you crane your neck - bring a fan - no microwave - internet works well- parking excellent which is good as most touristy things are in walking distance and you really don't want to drive downtown St. John's. http://murraypremiseshotel.com/ -excellent seafood crepe at this place: http://www.portobellosrestaurant.ca/menu.html http://www.portobellosrestaurant.ca/ - on the way back got a very good 'package' which included 2 nights accomodation, zip lining over mountains -lots of fun especially if you don't like heights - and an elevated obstacle course here: -marble mountain villa - zip line - spider challenge - bring drinking water - good room and activity deal - try it! All you do is hang in the harness! http://marbleziptours.com/zip-line-tours/ http://marbleziptours.com/?wptheme=Marble+Zip+Summer+Theme http://www.skimarble.com/summer/marble-villa --st. christopher's hotel, port aux basques http://www.stchrishotel.com/ comparable to hotel port aux basques, -harbour view restaurant down the hill - good view, food not good, bar downstairs is better. -back to port hastings - canso causeway -port hawkesbury / auld's cove cove motel - get cabin, not room - great food, water view restaurant - internet very poor http://www.covemotel.com/ From here to Edmonston N.B. again - Motel la Roma - decent overnight accomodation -back to Ontario - most of the way to Newfoundland from Ontario is now four lane with a 30 minute patch between Quebec and New Brunswick two lane with plenty of passing lanes, then four lane most of the way to North Sydney and the ferry with about the last 100 km's or so two lane with lots of passing lanes. -trans Canada highway across Newfoundland is two lane with very frequent passing lanes - Costs - spent on average between $200-$250 a day - food in restaurants fairly expensive - most accomodations in the $100 - $130 per night amount - gas $1.20 - $1.26 a liter - might be cheaper this year (some plan in Atlantic Canada to stabilize gas prices between provinces)
  6. Ensure that BRP has fixed the problem with the 550 fan cooled blowing up due to limited compression space in its cylinders. Some dealers were installing an extra wide head gasket and increasing oil flow to compensate for a lean setting developed to meet CAFE averages. The 600 ACE is a quiet efficient motor not prone to overheating in even thin conditions - ice scratchers should be used in extreme cases, instances of 20,000 miles (not kms) with out any type of trouble are common to this engine. 30 miles per gallon is a spec met by most users on medium weight sleds.
  7. You can make your own - 1/3 kerosene, 1/3 isopropyl alcohol, 1/3 naptha gas. Check the WHIMS sheets.
  8. Keep an eye on your frame - big recall in Canada and the US for Tacoma 05 to 08 for rusty frames. Check behind the catalytic converters on each side and the box frame in the front. Toyota got skunked by Dana Corporation (successfully sued them) who manufactured frames from them and turned out shoddy parts. Since the switch to US parts from those in Japan in earlier generations, all kinds of bad things happening - AC Delco radios turning on full blast by themselves, steel wheels rusting, bad bearing in front differentials on the 4X4 among others. Your vibration at 100 kph is likely caused by a steering damper that needs adjustment - look up the TSB. Dealer will inspect and recommend either a coating of some kind of anti rust compound or a complete frame replacement. Do a search on www.tacomaworld.com for details. The Tacoma is still the best selling mid-sized truck because it is the best of a bunch of poor choices, but maybe that will change if Chevy's new Colorado/Canyon is up to much and won't catch fire in your driveway.
  9. Flying squirrel problem here. The installer of the whirlies did nothing in the way of keeping out varmints - hole in the roof completely uncovered. Found flying squirrels in the walls behind toilet. Mad chewing while we sat on the can. Couldn't figure out how they got in assuming no one would be stupid enough to install vents without screening. Finally found the entrance points in the middle of the night waiting with a flashlight. Quarter inch screen and insect screen to keep out bees and wasps installed over holes finally ended a 2 year problem.
  10. Of course the local people are against it....it would mean JOBS! And they'd have to give up their E.I.! Look no further than Bala if you want to see what will happen if business does not move to central Ontario. No gas station, nothing open during the off season months. Worthless trendy junk clothing stores in the summer. A company has been trying to develop a hydro electric plant there for years now. Would create economic possibilities for the town. But - The current mayor and council have fought tooth and nail defeat it - bad for the rich people's property values. So far, their appeals have cost local taxpayers close to $200,000 but the dumb mayor is going to spend more money trying again. The mayor also turned down a fully funded low income housing development for local people. Said it didn't meet the planning guidelines when it certainly did. She approved a Yoga studio instead.... Now look to Bracebridge. Built a nice hydro plant, incorporated a fish ladder and an interpretive centre. That's the way to do business.
  11. Sorry, dashed this off in a hurry and does sound like bragging. In actual fact, wife suggested it after I had quit a pack a day smoking habit for a year after 25 years. With cigarettes at $90 a carton, the reel cost 6.6 cartons or thereabouts. Good incentive for those still puffing away? (although sometimes I do like a bit of second hand smoke just to remind me of a smoke after a good meal)
  12. In congruence with the time spent verses the moneyspent continuum, purchased a Shimano Calais DC 200 - end of backlashes and end of clearing them.
  13. Pop quiz for you: - Name the person you voted for as your school trustee during the last municipal elections. Informing that person of your concerns is more productive than complaining on a fishing forum.
  14. Model is famous for rubber fuel feed hoses splitting. Have this checked. Also, spark arrestor sometimes clogs with carbon reducing RPM peak.
  15. The Stihls are good saws - however particularly loath the sliding plastic switch between choke-run-off. I can't count how many times a work gloved thumb has inadvertantly slipped on the grip and shut the saw down mid cut. Poor design. The couple I have have also had problems with rubber fuel lines rotting and splitting.
  16. Sorry about that - dancing fingers - fixed it to 40%. As a reward for your vigilance, a link to a chart which shows green /dry ratios - will come in handy if you are trying to figure out if your trailer will handle that extra cord you are thinking of loading. http://www.ncsec.org/cadre2/team18_2/students/percentWater.htm Elm will dry standing, but once it is cut will rot before it dries if left lying around.
  17. The internet wood burning sites are pretty good for picking up a few tips....ever tried lighting your fire from the top down as opposed to the bottom up? After a while you'll get to know your stove and using different species of wood will come about situationally....if you need a quck burst of heat, put on a birch log.....hard woods as mentioned for long sustained burns....pine will work well for creating a bed of coals (don't overlook any dimensional lumber left over from projects or even from 'free' piles outside place that use shipping skids) On the other hand, if you have any elm, don't bother unless you are trying to create a smoky smudge...when living they are 40% water, take at least two years to season before they will even light, and are just not worth the trouble. Being cheap as dirt is okay, but if at an early stage, invest extra in a really efficient stove which will save time and money inthe long run. A Pacific Energy Super Series stove might produce only a grand total of a half cup of creasote off a 26' chimney a year.
  18. I saw the show on CBC and was wondering about this strategy as well. At many hospitals, there is a private company -Impark?? or something, that is contracted to do the parking. If you pay for parking, hospital gets money. If the company gives you a ticket (and the have incentive plans for their employees to hand them out) the money goe to the private contractor! Not a penny (nickel) goes to the hospital. If there is no deal between the government (MTO?) that they can withhold your license plate re-newal (as in unpaid 407 tolls) why pay the tickets? I suppose the company could black list your vehicle if you are a frequent hospital visitor and get you towed, but it would almost pay to have someone site with your vehicle at minimum wage warning the attendents to keep their hands off. Meanwhile, lobby your locally elected municipal councillors to pass a by-law which would ban the charging of public parking at public institutions. One mayor was interviewed in the story and the town had banned the use of parking meters in the hospital lot.
  19. Bought a Shimano Calais DC 200. Cost 6 1/2 cartons. Nicely mounted on a Ugly Stick. If you have a problem with that as someone last summer did, tell me where yours is mounted.
  20. Have driven all over this country, millions of miles, Arctic ice roads to Maritime conditions on both coasts with all season tires and no accidents. Just change driving habits in the winter. It seems after one huge and expensive marketing / lobbying campaign on behalf of the tire manufactures, everyone, including the Quebec government (no kickbacks there eh? ha ha - just limited to the construction industry you say?)was falling all over themselves to get snow tires, defend their use of snow tires, brag about their use of snow tires, etc. ad nauseum. Good for the overall economy I guess.
  21. Story by CBC: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/story/2012/12/13/nb-eels-shortage-prices-research.html
  22. Pay the extra money for the ACE600. About two years ago BRP decided to modify the 550 fan to meet emissions targets. This caused some of them to blow up within 300 miles of running. Motors were leaned out and there were problems with oil delivery systems not set up properly or no oil at all. One dealer was installing a thicker head gasket on new machines to make up for some compression problems as well. The ACE is a very quiet, fuel efficient engine with plenty of power, certainly better than the fan. No blue smoke. You can stand beside it while running and talk to someone in a normal volume of voice.
  23. GM in their advertisements says they have top ratings in CONSUMERS DIGEST, a for- profit magazine sponsored by the car makers and others. Do not confuse this with Consumer REPORTS a non-profit organization. I won't even look at GM because of this sleazy tactic alone.
  24. Your left rear brake light is burned out.
