  2. Welcome, Fishing takes a lifetime to learn and it will also teach you many valuable lessons. Part of it is reading but the big part is to find someone who fishes and see if you can barter a trip with them. I started off hanging out at a local boat ramp and fishing from the dock. Looking at what people have on their rods when they pull in kind of lets you get familiar with different baits and ask them if they had any luck. if someone seems friendly and answers your questions you might ask them if they would like to have you fish with them from their boat. Tell them a little about yourself and offer to bring them a great lunch and chip in for fuel. That is how I met my mentor who gave me 30 years of companionship, wisdom and morality that has served me well. Cheers Art

  4. Great looking flies bud. Heres a few of my bass fly ties. First is the gutless frog, next tube clouser minnows, next perch clousers for pike, then the foam plipper,a popper with a lip! Last is the Shuffler . A foam fly from an australian design. Totally weedless and an awsome swiming action! Cheers

  7. I've been playing around in the shop thinking on how I might repurpose the gold foil off of store wrapped baking potatoes, don't ask me why.... lol It's still a little raw and unpolished but I'm thinking it could work. Thoughts?

  9. There is a small, cottage based company that is close to my cottage in Port Loring. They have been making jackets for a long time. We own a number of them and they are fantastic, the company is called Northern Bug Wear. Here is a link to their site: https://www.northernbugwear.ca/

  10. If you want to shorten the learning curve spend a day with a guide or charter. Pay attention and ask lots of questions. It will be money well invested. If you want as you say to "catch big fish, not small ones", book a guide/ charter on Lake St.Clair...it's not far from London. Probably one of the best Musky lakes around for numbers. In the spring and fall, if you want to fish rivers, there are a number of guides that do float trips for Steelhead on the Lake Huron rivers...again not far.

  11. Seeing your dragon flies reminds me of a time I was fishing for large mouth up at Stokes Bay and noticed two large dragonflies on some reeds about eight feet in front of me (I was wading) We had a heavy dew that night and their wings hadn't dried out so they could fly. A couple minutes later a big large mouth came out of the water and picked one off the reed, a few seconds later it came back and grabbed the other one. It was something to see especially that close. That was the same day I caught my 8.5lb large mouth on a big hula popper. Out of all the ones I caught that day the smallest was 4lb. all on the surface in thick lily pads.

  12. I have always learned by doing, no matter what you are trying to learn . It's the best teacher around. Find a stretch of river or quiet lakeside and go for it. I walked my local stretch of river, pond or beach from around 10 years old 'till I came to Canada. Here, I did the same thing, not as often as I was married with marital responsibilities. You will learn what works and what doesn't and species in that water. As Art says be like a sponge and absorb knowledge from locals on and around the water, most will share their experience, if not their favourite spots...🙂

  13. When you say a trip do you want a fly in or a long drive to Northern Ontario? Depending where you live I know that Erieau just outside Chatham will get you some real hogs. We fish there a lot cause it is so close and catching 4, 5 ,6 pound walleye is very common. My best day I caught an 11 pounder. Nice because the limit is 6 fish. If you are not familiar with the lake people at the marina or bait shop will help. Very friendly.

  14. Local tackle shops are usually a wealth of knowledge, there are online tools like Fishonline that can help you choose a spot to check out, good luck!

  16. I'd buy a cheap bug jacket to start and see if you like the bug jacket concept. I don't like bug jackets. They restrict my vision and make me feel claustrophobic, for lack of a better word. I like spraying the hell out of my hat and clothes with bug spray. Chuck showed me this, if you're stationary (sitting around the campfire or something) light a bunch of pics around the perimeter and mainly upwind. The regular, old school pics, not the citronella ones.

  17. I was at the Gen 7 station at Curve Lake to fill up with their Marine 91 ethanol free fuel on the long weekend. The pump at the side of the station is now a regular 87 pump. There was a gas station attendant cleaning the pumps so I asked what happened to the marine fuel? His response was that the supplier of fuel to the first nations stations will no longer sell them ethanol free fuel. The government mandate and that they were not on the water supplying fuel to watercraft were the 2 reasons I was given. He said the 91 should have less ethanol than the 87, but no guarantee on that statement, I intend to try Otter Marine in Curve Lake to see if I can buy marine fuel in my 20L jerry cans at a reasonable price. Marine fuel where I am located is a 30 minute boat ride and a 50% premium compared to the price at Curve Lake. Bill
