Hi guys,
I am in the market for a new nav card for my new boat/plotter. In my old boat I had a Hummingbird Helix 5 Si GPS with the Lake Master chip and it worked well for my needs. My new boat has the Lowrance HDS-7 Gen 2 and the Insight card. The Insight card is not the greatest for the lakes I fish up north so I will be upgrading it. I dominantly fish Ontario, Erie, St.Clair, Detroit River, and several smaller lakes in northern Ontario.
My choices are between the Navionics + card (Canada & Alaska) $149.00USD, or the Navionics Hotmaps Platinum (Canada) $199.00USD. Both cards qualify for a $50USD rebate until Dec 31.
My question is...........is the Hotmaps Premium worth it? The difference between the cards is:
- Satellite overlay (not available in Ontario)
- Relief shading - ?? Usable ??
- Sonar chart relief - ?? usable ??
- 3D view - useless feature IMHO
- Panamera photo's - useless feature IMHO
We brought up four girls with one income, there was almost never a do you deliver night!
we make everything at home from jarred tomatoes to our own cured pork products. I make my own wine and have been for 40+ years. Always keep a well stocked pantry from specials or buy in bulk.
Today’s kids are a bit different want stuff prepared for them. Advertising (which I was/am in) sold that idea.
Fisherman, we have NEVER had a TV dinner! they still sell that crap!
if in pinch; broccoli rob (Rapini) in frying pan with garlic and a few hot red pepper 🌶 flakes and on a hot plate of pasta. About $2.00 for four.
Been a bit busy on the vise .
Kid wanted some yarnies and single eggs
Then wanted some balanced jigs for under the float
Thought I would play with some rabbit hair balanced ice jigs for perch.
Both my kids and their spouses work out; the same as my wife and I. What we (My kids have followed suit) have always done is take one weekend a month and make them cooking days. From beef/pork roasts, chicken, spaghetti sauce, lasagna to soups and stews. Keep one of the bigger meals for our Sunday family supper. The rest go into vacuum sealer bags and then in the freezer. When we want something at the end of a long day; it's there waiting for us. With-in an hour we can be at the table having a home cooked meal. My wife is a flyer shopper; if she misses something good, my daughter or daughter in-law are texting to let all of us know where and what it is.

Now ya talkin'! #20's in that pattern was my go to, except tied on barbless spade hooks. They were a much finer gauge wire. In those days #16's were large hooks and 18's were average.
LOL. Happened to me last year Bill. Ice was getting close and someone on another board posted a picture of their group walking out of Tudhope Park. Called my buddy and we went up the next day. There was ice alright....maybe enough for a seagull to stand on without going through😠 Obviously the picture was not taken that week. Not a total loss though as we fished 2 other spots on the way back to Oshawa and ended up with a small feed of perch and crappie.
To be clear I'm not trying to make someone waste there time for a trip up. I was just posting to show how late the ice is this year compared to what it was in 2007.
Just pulled my little guy out of storage. Get some maintenance done, fit a set of skies to the front wheels and wait for the big freeze to come. I was going to wash it; but then though there's no sense to polish a turd. LOL

Despite 2020 being a complete $hit show, I had some fun out there on the water.
was a later than normal open water season for pike but we did well teaching the young lads how to fish for spring pike. Explaining the finer points of jerkbaits to the kids it was fun watching them hone in on their new found skill.
bass fishing was hit and miss for me this year. I fished a total of 8 new lakes this summer which took up most of my bass season. Some a complete waste of time, some still on the radar for further exploration next summer. My typical late season largemouth trips went right up until November 22 and may extend to one more trip. Possibly a couple trips to the mighty Niagara coming up soon but with the borders closed and no drifting allowed on the US side I may focus back on pike to round out the season. Here is my best fish porn of 2020. Enjoy
With prices going up on almost everything and with the increased carbon tax set to go up significantly food costs are going to go through the roof. Watching for these specials is going to become even more important. A couple of weeks ago Valuemart had beef tenderloins on for $5.99/lb, I wish I had loaded up on those, that's cheaper than stewing beef. This pork sholder will yield almost 20 meals, not bad for about $10.00.
I have no problem with reversing mono on my center pin. Why not save a few bucks when you can? The 150 yds you never use is as good as the day you put it on, in most cases. And burying the 50 or so yds that you do use makes sense!
I have a lot of them and wish them all the best. In these trying times. No matter what we do, this situation should keep us together.
Let’s Celebrate the holidays as best as we can. Keep safe better times are coming, hopefully.
I used my dad's one when I built this back in the 90's.
Along with a ton of other tools of course. Made from rough cut lumber I got off my buddy that was a logger.
